THE MASK
The night was unnaturally quiet, as if the city itself was holding its breath. Broken streetlights flickered above an abandoned factory, casting long, nervous shadows across the rusted gates. Arin had no idea why he felt pulled here—only that something inside the darkness was calling his name.
He pushed open the metal door.
A slow, echoing creak rolled through the empty hall like a warning.
Inside, dust floated in the air like frozen snow. Pipes hissed softly, leaking cold breath into the shadows. Arin’s flashlight shook slightly in his hand as he walked deeper, the beam cutting through the silence.
Then he saw it.
A mask lying in the center of the room.
Pure white.
Smooth.
Empty-eyed.
But the strangest part—
It looked completely new, untouched by time.
Arin stepped closer, unable to resist. Something about the mask felt alive.
As he bent down, a faint whisper crawled across the floor.
“Arin…”
His heart slammed against his ribs.
He spun around—no one.
The whisper came again, soft but clear.
“Pick me up.”
His body moved before his mind did. He reached out and touched the mask.
A loud click.
A spark.
A breath that wasn’t his.
The mask awakened.
A hollow voice echoed from inside, neither male nor female.
“You found me.”
Arin staggered backward.
“Who—what are you?”
The voice replied with a calm, chilling tone.
“I am the Gatekeeper of the Hidden Universe. And now… you belong to me.”
Suddenly, a bright light blasted down from above.
Arin shielded his eyes.
On the balcony, dark silhouettes appeared—men in black tactical suits, guns drawn, moving with silent precision.
One of them shouted,
“Don’t move! Step away from the artifact!”
Artifact?
They were talking about the mask.
Arin’s instincts screamed run, but his feet refused. The mask felt glued to his hand, pulsing like a heartbeat.
The voice inside whispered again.
“They will take me.
If they do, your world dies.”
Arin didn’t understand, but fear made him act.
He lifted the mask toward his face.
An agent yelled, “Stop! Don’t wear it!”
But it was too late.
The mask sealed itself against his skin with a violent snap.
Darkness swallowed him.
The world folded, twisted, broke.
He felt weightless, then crushed.
Blind, then blinded by too much.
Voices screamed, machines broke, walls cracked—but none of it was real. Or maybe all of it was.
Then came the final whisper:
“Welcome, Arin.
Welcome to the space between worlds.”
A thunderous shockwave exploded outward, shattering the factory.
Agents were thrown across the floor. Beams fell. Metal screamed.
In the center of the chaos, Arin stood perfectly still.
The mask’s eyes lit with a cold, unnatural glow.
Arin whispered, trembling,
“What… have I become?”
The mask answered:
“The chosen one.
The last key.
The danger they feared.”
And somewhere in the distant dark, something ancient… awakend
