Chapter 4 — Settling In

Morning arrived with a golden glow spilling through the windows, painting everything in warm light. I stretched my tiny paws, ears twitching, and yawned—a surprisingly large yawn for such a small body. The house smelled of toasted bread, fresh fruit, and something delightfully mysterious that made my nose wiggle. Breakfast time.

Kai was already bustling around the kitchen, humming softly. Ren adjusted the temperature on a panel that glowed faintly like a tiny sun, muttering to himself about “efficiency.” Jiro sat quietly at the table, arms crossed, watching everything as if he were memorizing the exact location of every crumb. I padded behind them, ears alert, tail flicking with anticipation.

I noticed first the little hazards: the edge of the counter glistened dangerously close to the floor, the kettle’s handle was slightly loose, and a chair leg threatened to wobble at the slightest nudge. My tiny brain whirred with calculations. If I didn’t act, breakfast might become… chaotic. And I wasn’t about to let that happen.

With a swift hop, I nudged the chair leg just enough to make it settle safely. Kai hummed a distracted tune, oblivious. I adjusted the kettle’s handle with a delicate push. Ren glanced at it briefly. “Hmm,” he muttered, but returned to his panel. Jiro’s eyes flicked to me for a moment, his expression unreadable, before he looked away. Perfect. Crisis averted, and not a single alpha fully realized what just happened.

Next, the “sticky floor” situation. Yesterday, a small spill had gone unnoticed, leaving a tiny puddle of something slippery near the entrance. If any of the alphas stepped on it, disaster would strike—breakfast plates flying, cereal everywhere. I nudged a small mat into place, careful to look innocent. Kai’s foot tapped over it without a hitch. He chuckled. “Good morning, little fluff.” I twitched my ears, pretending to be sleepy, but inside, I felt a tiny rush of pride.

Breakfast itself became an exercise in subtle heroics. I caught a spoon that nearly tumbled from Ren’s hand, nudged a sugar container away from tipping, and even “helped” by batting a stray berry onto Kai’s plate. He laughed, scooping it up. “Smart bunny,” he said, oblivious to the fact that it hadn’t been luck at all.

Amid my quiet management of the household chaos, humor found its way in. The toaster, in a rebellious mood, ejected a slice of bread with surprising force. I jumped, paws up, and caught it mid-air—only to have it land squarely on my head. Ren raised an eyebrow, Jiro suppressed a snort, and Kai laughed so hard he nearly spilled his tea. I shook crumbs from my fur, ears flopping, and gave them my most innocent “What? It’s breakfast!” look. They melted, of course.

By mid-morning, I had mapped the house completely. Dangerous edges? Noted. Hot surfaces? Marked. Escape routes in case of sudden villainous intrusion? Calculated. I even organized the scattered toys and small appliances into neat piles without anyone noticing. It was satisfying in a quiet, smug sort of way.

Yet, the alphas still saw me as a baby. They cooed, doted, and occasionally marveled at my “instincts.” “he’s different,” Kai said once, rocking me gently. Ren merely nodded, muttering about “remarkable reflexes,” while Jiro remained silent, his eyes thoughtful. None of them suspected the full truth: I wasn’t just instinctive. I was watching, planning, and anticipating.

That night, as I curled in my tiny bed—soft blankets wrapped snugly around me—I felt the warmth of the house and the protection of my alphas seep into my bones. This house wasn’t just a home; it was a fortress, and I intended to be its quiet, clever guardian. Maybe they thought I was just a baby. Maybe they thought I was nothing more than fluff and cuteness.

But babies could see. Babies could think. And babies—especially me—could plan.

And occasionally, babies could make a toaster explode in your face and still look adorable doing it.
