Chapter 5 — A Hint of Awareness

Breakfast had a rhythm today. The sunlight spilled in through the large windows, warming the polished floors and glinting off the silver utensils. Kai hummed a soft tune as he poured tea, Ren arranged the plates with precise efficiency, and Jiro sat quietly, observing everything with that inscrutable expression that made me twitch my ears in anticipation.

I hopped to my usual spot at the edge of the table, tail flicking like a tiny metronome. My paws rested lightly on a small toy I had dragged from the play corner—an odd, squeaky cylinder that could topple if nudged the wrong way. Beside it lay a spoon, just within reach. My eyes scanned the scene carefully: the juice glass on the table teetered slightly on the edge, threatening to tip with even the slightest bump.

Ah, perfect. Time to show subtle genius.

I nudged the toy just so, positioning it like a tiny barricade between the glass and the table’s edge. Then, with a delicate flick of the spoon, I created a gentle counterbalance. The juice stayed perfectly upright, a miracle unnoticed by the untrained eye. I leaned back on my tiny haunches, ears twitching in satisfaction.

Kai glanced down just as the glass wobbled slightly—and then steadied itself. He chuckled, a low, affectionate sound. “Well, would you look at that?” he said, eyes softening as he reached to pat my head. I twitched my ears, pretending to be sleepy, letting the praise wash over me like sunlight on my fur.

Ren raised an eyebrow, leaning back slightly in his chair. “Did… that just happen?” His voice carried both surprise and a hint of skepticism. I gave a tiny squeak, paws curling around the toy as if it were a mere plaything. Innocent. Clumsy. Harmless. That was the mask I wore perfectly.

Jiro, as always, remained silent. His dark eyes flicked between my small paws, the toy, and the precarious glass. I could feel his gaze studying me, dissecting each movement, each twitch of my ears, each subtle tilt of my head. There was something in his eyes—a spark of curiosity, maybe even admiration. For the first time, I sensed that one of them might be questioning what they thought they knew about me.

The breakfast continued with the usual rhythm of clinking cutlery and murmured conversation. I moved subtly, nudging stray crumbs toward the edge of my tray so they wouldn’t spill onto the floor. A small plate threatened to slide on the polished surface, and I tapped it gently back into place, earning a quiet, amused sigh from Kai. Ren glanced again, slightly suspicious, but didn’t comment. Jiro’s lips twitched in the faintest hint of a smile before he looked away.

Even in the smallest moments, I could feel my intelligence making its mark. I wasn’t just reacting; I was anticipating, calculating, and intervening with precision. And yet, no one fully realized the depth of what I was doing. To them, I was a baby—a cute, clever baby, yes—but still a baby.

After breakfast, Kai lifted me onto his lap, scratching behind my ears as if I were nothing more than a furball. “You’re full of surprises, little one,” he said softly. I leaned into his warmth, letting the affection fill me while keeping my mind sharp, analyzing every detail.

Ren finally spoke, voice low and careful. “Mimi… you may be more perceptive than I thought.” His words were almost casual, but I caught the weight behind them. Jiro’s eyes lingered on me, dark and thoughtful, like he was piecing together a puzzle I had carefully hidden.

I twitched my nose, giving my most innocent look, letting them believe it was instinct or luck. But inside, a thrill raced through me. For the first time, one of them had glimpsed the truth—or at least, a fraction of it. My cleverness, my awareness, my quiet ability to protect and guide, had started to ripple beyond mere instinct.

And I had no intention of stopping here.

The world was bright, the house was warm, and my three alphas were beginning to notice.

Tomorrow, I would observe more. Help more. And maybe, just maybe, I would push the boundaries of their expectations even further.

After all, even a baby could plan.
