Shadows Beneath His Smile.

Shadows Beneath His Smile.

CHAPTER 1 - The Man With No Past.

Country M had its monsters, but none whispered more fearfully through alleyways than Khalid Al-Matar. In boardrooms he was spoken of as a ghost. In the underworld, he was a storm—swift, silent, and merciless.

His power was a web stretching across cities: ports, black markets, politicians with trembling hands.

But on a rainy night in District Twelve, the storm bled.

Khalid rarely made mistakes, yet the ambush had been planned too well. A gunshot cut through the night, followed by chaos.

His men rushed him into an abandoned alley, but he had already lost too much blood. The world blurred, sounds echoing like underwater whispers.

He stumbled into a faintly lit clinic, collapsing against a metal door. A woman’s gasp echoed behind him.

“Hey—! Sir, you’re bleeding!”

He lifted his head, vision shaky. A young doctor stood there, her eyes wide but steady. Dr. Yuna Han, the silver badge read.

She wasn't trembling like most would in the presence of a man drenched in blood. She didn’t even ask who he was—she simply acted.

“Inside. Now,” she ordered.

Khalid smirked weakly. “You give orders like you expect people to obey.”

“I expect people to live. Sit.”

Her hands worked quickly—pressing, stitching, cleaning. Her touch was firm but gentle, her voice calm but urgent.

Khalid watched her, intrigued. No fear. No judgment. Only determination.

“Who shot you?” she asked while disinfecting the wound.

“Wrong place… wrong time,” he lied smoothly.

Yuna raised an eyebrow. “That’s a lot of firepower for an unlucky coincidence.”

He chuckled quietly. “I fell.”

“On a bullet?”

Her sarcasm cut through the haze of pain, and for the first time in years, he felt something unfamiliar—ease. He wasn’t used to people speaking to him like he was human, not a myth wrapped in danger.

She finished the stitching and bandaged him carefully.

“You need to rest for at least an hour. If you pass out before that, I’ll be very annoyed.”

He leaned back, studying her face. “You’re not scared of me.”

Yuna paused. “Should I be?”

Yes, he thought.
But he said nothing.

Instead, he offered a faint, disarming smile—the kind that hid far too many sins.

Then, for the first time in a decade, Khalid Al-Matar used a false name.

“Call me… Amir.”

Yuna nodded. “Alright, Amir. Try not to die. It would ruin my night.”

As the rain softened against the clinic windows, a strange calm settled between them. Khalid knew he should leave as soon as he could.

His world didn’t allow softness, kindness, or unexpected attachments.

But for the first time, he didn’t want to walk away.

He didn’t know it yet, but this woman—the one who stitched his wound without trembling—had already become the only place in his darkness where light dared to enter.

And he would do anything to keep her from discovering the shadows beneath his smile.

To be continued….
