CHAPTER 4 - When Danger Knocks

The clinic had never felt so small.

Yuna stood frozen behind Amir—the man with no past, the man whose presence filled the room like a silent threat. He didn’t move, didn’t breathe loudly, didn’t blink. He was listening.

The footsteps outside stopped right at the clinic’s entrance.

Yuna whispered, “Is it… someone looking for you?”

Amir didn’t answer. His jaw tightened, muscles flexing beneath the thin shirt she’d lent him. His hand slipped into his pocket, and for the first time, she realized he didn’t move like an injured man—he moved like someone trained for danger.

Another knock. Harder this time.

Yuna flinched.

“Stay here,” Amir murmured, voice low enough to barely exist.

Before she could protest, he stepped forward and opened the clinic door just a crack. Yuna held her breath, watching the shift in his posture: calm, unreadable, but ready to strike.

A man stood outside. Tall. Rough. Eyes darting around nervously.

“Sorry to bother…” the stranger said, scratching the back of his neck. “I—uh—I need a doctor. My kid’s running a fever.”

Yuna exhaled sharply in relief. Amir watched the man for another second—too long, too intensely—before stepping aside to let him in.

“You can help him,” Amir said, glancing back at Yuna.

The way he said it wasn’t a request. It was permission—guarded, cautious permission—as if he was still evaluating the stranger as a threat.

Yuna pushed past the tension in her chest and walked toward the boy lying weakly in his father’s arms. “Put him on the cot. What’s his temperature?”

As she worked, she felt Amir’s presence behind her, a silent wall. He didn’t sit. Didn’t relax. His eyes scanned every corner of the clinic like danger might crawl out from the walls.

Thirty minutes later, the boy was stable, already looking better after medication and rest.

“Thank you,” the father said, bowing his head gratefully. “Really, thank you.”

When they left, the clinic felt too quiet again.

Yuna turned to Amir. “You thought he was someone else.”

“Yes.”

“Someone dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“And you were ready to—”

She couldn’t finish the sentence.

Amir’s eyes softened almost imperceptibly. “To protect you.”

Yuna blinked. “Me? Why?”

He hesitated, his jaw clenching. “Because you didn’t have to save me last night. But you did. And now…” He exhaled slowly. “Now I owe you more than you realize.”

“I didn’t save you for some kind of debt,” she said softly. “I helped you because it’s my job. Because you were hurt.”

“And that,” Amir whispered, stepping closer, “is exactly why I can’t let anything happen to you.”

Their faces were only inches apart. She could feel the heat radiating from him, the scent of faint smoke and clean linen clinging to his skin.

“You don’t even know me,” Yuna murmured.

“I know enough.”

“And what is that?”

“That you’re the first person in a long time,” he said, voice barely holding steady, “who made me feel something other than anger.”

Her heartbeat stumbled.

He stepped back suddenly, as if realizing he’d crossed a line he shouldn’t have. “I should go,” he murmured.

“You can’t. You’re not healed.”

“It’s safer for you if I leave.”

Safer.

Everything about him was a warning wrapped in a man she shouldn’t want.

But Yuna took a step forward anyway.

“If you walk out now,” she said softly, “your wound will tear. And you might die.”

He paused.

For the first time, Amir didn’t have an answer.

To be Continued…..
