The word problem refused to leave Aira’s mind.
She lay in bed staring at the ceiling again, but sleep would not come. Her room felt unfamiliar now, as if the walls were slowly leaning in toward her.
We have a problem.
The message echoed inside her chest.
She hugged her blanket tightly, trying to feel safe in a space that no longer felt like home.
Was Mikael dangerous?
Was he watching her?
Was he watching Rayan too?
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
She typed carefully.
What kind of problem?
The reply from Rayan came slowly this time.
The kind that doesn’t smile unless it wants something.
Her breath hitched.
So he knew Mikael.
Or at least the type.
She stared at the glow of her screen until her eyes burned.
The next morning, the air felt heavy before she even stepped inside the school.
Something was wrong.
She felt it in her chest.
Her steps slowed the closer she got to the building, like her body was trying to stop her.
Go back, her mind whispered.
Stay invisible.
But her feet kept moving.
Inside, the school buzzed with noise and life, but it all sounded distant and distorted, like she was underwater.
Whispers floated around.
Laughter felt sharp.
She felt eyes on her again.
Always eyes.
Her phone buzzed as she reached her locker.
Rayan:
Stay close to the staff rooms today.
She read it twice.
Then a third time.
Stay close.
As if danger walked freely in hallways.
A sudden voice spoke near her ear.
“Good morning, Aira.”
Her blood ran cold.
She didn’t want to turn.
She did anyway.
Mikael.
Standing there casually.
Smile soft.
Eyes sharp.
“You look tired,” he said.
She forced her face to stay neutral.
“I didn’t sleep.”
He nodded like that pleased him.
“Sleep is difficult when you’re being noticed,” he said softly.
She swallowed hard.
“What do you want?” she asked.
He stepped just a bit closer.
“To understand you.”
“I don’t like being understood,” she replied quietly.
That made him smile.
“I figured.”
He walked past her, brushing his shoulder lightly against hers.
She flinched.
Not from pain.
From instinct.
He leaned closer as he passed and whispered:
“Run while you still can.”
She stood frozen long after he was gone.
Between classes, Aira felt dizzy.
The halls felt like narrow tunnels.
The walls felt closer.
Everything felt wrong.
She sat near a classroom door, trying to slow her breathing.
Then she saw him.
Rayan.
Standing across the hallway.
Watching her.
Scanning everything around her too.
He walked toward her but stopped a few steps away.
Close enough.
Not too close.
His eyes moved over her face.
“Did he touch you?” he asked quietly.
“No,” she said.
His jaw tightened.
“Did he say anything?”
She hesitated.
“He said…”
She stopped.
Her voice felt stuck.
Rayan waited.
“He told me to run.”
Rayan looked away for a second.
That scared her.
More than shouting would have.
“That’s not a random warning,” he said.
“That’s a message.”
“A message for who?”
“For me.”
That answer tasted like fear.
After school, the sky turned a dark, cloudy grey.
Aira took a different route home.
She checked behind her every few steps.
Footsteps.
But not hers.
Her heart started racing.
Someone was behind her.
Closer.
Closer.
She turned suddenly.
Nothing.
Just the wind.
Just the trees.
Just silence.
She let out a shaky breath.
Then—
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Rayan.
Did you change your route?
Her fingers shook.
She typed:
Yes.
The response came immediately.
Good.
Her relief lasted one second.
Then another message appeared.
Don’t turn around.
Her spine went cold.
Every muscle in her body froze.
Her footsteps slowed.
Behind her…
She felt someone’s presence.
Breath.
Heat.
Silence.
Her phone buzzed again.
Walk faster.
Her legs moved without thought now.
One step.
Two steps.
Three.
A shadow stretched forward on the pavement.
It wasn’t hers.
Her phone vibrated one last time.
He’s there.
She didn’t scream.
She didn’t look back.
But her fingers trembled around her phone.
Her heart screamed loud enough for both of them.
Ahead, the road felt endless.
Behind her…
Danger smiled.
