The city of azure flames

By the time Li Yan descended from Mount Qinglan, twilight had already spread across the horizon. The dying sun painted the sky in a mixture of crimson and molten gold, setting the valleys aflame with light.

He paused on a cliff’s edge and looked back one last time. His former sect stood in silence—nothing more than broken walls and ashes scattered by the mountain wind. A trace of bitterness ghosted across his face.

“It all began there,” he said quietly. “But the heavens do not care where you begin, only how far you’re willing to rise.”

A flicker of golden light shimmered across his chest—the mark of his divine sign-in pulsing faintly with each heartbeat. A voice whispered within his mind, gentle but powerful.

[Updated Objective: Reach the City of Azure Flames. Time until resonance window closes: Forty-eight hours.]

He tightened his cloak and began his descent through the forested slopes.

The journey tested him more than battle. The air thickened with spiritual fog as he neared the lower valleys, and with every step, traces of corrupted Qi stirred from the soil. Abandoned villages marked the way—places where mortals once cultivated in peace before imperial wars shattered the balance.

At nightfall, he reached the valley’s bottom. A faint blue glow flickered on the horizon—rising like a ghostly flame. The City of Azure Flames.

Li Yan approached warily. The city was unlike anything he’d seen. Its walls were made of dark azure stone veined with luminous streams of Qi. Thousands of blue lanterns floated above the streets, their flames powered not by oil but by spiritual essence harvested from the surrounding ley lines.

Merchants, travelers, and cultivators filled the main gate, their robes revealing affiliations from various sects. The air buzzed with energy and ambition.

As Li Yan stepped forward, a guard extended his spear. “Name and intent, traveler.”

Li Yan smiled slightly. “Li Yan. I seek cultivation materials and lodging.”

The guard frowned, noticing the faint divine glow in his eyes but, sensing no hostility, stepped aside. “Enter, but cause no trouble. Azure Flames watches everyone.”

Once inside, Li Yan’s Eye of Revelation opened instinctively. Energy threads filled the city like a woven net — divine inscriptions sealed under every building, pulsing faintly beneath the cobblestones. Someone had turned this city into a formation — a living altar drawing power from heaven itself.

“Interesting…” he muttered. “Even mortals here feed on heaven’s scraps.”

Then, the system spoke again.

[Resonance Detected: Sign-In Point — Heart of Azure Flames Temple.]

[Warning: Strong Divine Signature detected. Guardian Level—High.]

Li Yan breathed deeply. “A divine guardian this soon?” His lips curved into a daring smile. “Good. The heavens want to test me early.”

He followed the resonance trail through crowded markets and streets shimmering with light until he reached the city’s heart — a towering temple forged of black crystal, its spires glowing with azure fire. The air trembled as divine heat rippled from the structure, warping the space around it.

Inside, prayer drums rumbled softly while priests and acolytes chanted hymns to the Azure Flame God, protector of the realm. Above them hung a portrait—a colossal image of a robed deity wreathed in blue fire, eyes like burning stars.

The moment Li Yan entered, the flames brightened.

A voice boomed through his mind. “Mortal intruder… you bring divine scent into my hall. Speak your purpose before my altar!”

Li Yan stepped forward unflinching, gazing up at the statue. “I have come to sign in,” he said simply.

The air shattered. From the portrait, fire erupted, condensing into a humanoid figure — a godly phantom cloaked in sapphire flames. The temperature soared, cracking the stone floor beneath Li Yan’s feet.

“You dare mock the heavens with mortal arrogance?” the specter thundered. “The divine path is not for thieves!”

Li Yan raised his hand, and the golden mark on his chest flared. “Then test whether this thief can burn brighter than your godfire!”

Flames rushed toward him, but the system chimed in calmly:

[Sign-In Commencing: Azure Flames Temple.]

[Condition: Survive Guardian’s Trial for 300 heartbeats.]

The countdown began.

Li Yan exhaled slowly, his Qi swirling like a storm. Inside those 300 heartbeats, the battle between mortal defiance and divine fury would decide whether he earned the next fragment of power—or perished before touching heaven again.

The first blast of blue fire struck. The temple roared. And Li Yan charged straight into it, eyes burning gold.
