The morning sunlight filtered through the tall windows of the school, casting long shadows across the hallways. Minjun walked with careful steps, adjusting his backpack but trying to appear casual. His mind wasn’t on classes or homework—it was on Hanna. After yesterday, he couldn’t stop thinking about her. The way she smiled, the gentle tilt of her head, and the ease with which she seemed to move through the halls made everything else fade, even the bullies and the cruel whispers that followed him like shadows.
He spotted her near the entrance to the cafeteria, laughing softly with a few friends. His heart fluttered, and for a moment, he froze. Then, taking a deep breath, he walked over. “Uh… hi,” he said, his voice breaking slightly. “Mind if I sit with you?”
Hanna looked up, surprised, then smiled warmly. “Not at all. Come on,” she said, moving her tray slightly.
He slid into the seat across from her, careful not to bump into the edge. “Thanks,” he muttered, feeling a strange warmth in his chest.
For a few moments, they didn’t speak, simply sharing the quiet of the cafeteria. Minjun watched her, noting the way sunlight caught her hair and the soft rhythm of her laughter. Every detail seemed amplified, as if he had only just learned to notice the small things around him.
“So… are you nervous about the history test today?” Hanna finally asked, her eyes meeting his.
Minjun blinked, caught off guard. “Uh… yeah, a little,” he admitted. “I always get anxious with tests.”
Hanna nodded knowingly. “Me too. But it’s better when you talk to someone instead of stressing alone.”
Her words struck a chord. He thought about the bullying, the online posts, and the whispers he had endured for weeks. Yet sitting here with Hanna, he realized that maybe opening up—even a little—didn’t have to be frightening. Maybe sharing a moment with someone else could make the world feel lighter.
They began talking quietly, at first about classes and teachers, then about small, ordinary things: favorite shows, weekend plans, and moments that made them laugh. Minjun felt a sense of relief he hadn’t experienced in a long time. Hanna didn’t judge him, didn’t try to fit him into her world or mock his quietness. She simply listened, and that alone made the hallway, the school, and even the long shadows of the day seem less heavy.
As lunch ended, Hanna packed her tray. “See you later, Minjun?” she asked, her smile gentle.
“Yeah… see you later,” he replied, feeling the warmth spread in his chest.
Walking back to class, Minjun noticed the hallways anew. They still held the faint shadows of the bullies and their cruel words, but now there was a light too—a light Hanna had brought without even trying. He realized that small steps toward someone else, small gestures and shared words, could shift the weight of fear and loneliness.
And maybe, just maybe, those steps were also the first steps toward himself.
