Noticed

The hallways were alive with morning chatter, lockers slamming, and the distant echo of footsteps, but Minjun felt a tension he couldn’t ignore. He walked beside Hanna, his books clutched loosely, trying to keep his steps calm. Her laughter, soft and easy, made the hallway feel brighter—but it also drew attention.

“I still can’t believe you stayed up finishing that history essay, Minjun” Hanna said, shaking her head. “You’re so crazy, Minjun.”

He smiled faintly, glancing toward the far end of the hall. “Yeah… maybe a little,” he said, his chest tightening. His gaze flicked to the usual group of bullies leaning against the lockers. Whispering, smirking, eyes locked on them. They had noticed.

Hanna followed his glance. “Who’s that?” she asked quietly, concern tugging at her voice.

“Just… some people,” Minjun said carefully. “They’re… watching us.”

She frowned. “Are they bothering you again?”

“Not yet,” he replied, forcing a calm tone. “But… I can feel it. They’re thinking about it.” The familiar ache of anxiety settled in his stomach, the one he had felt with online posts and rage bait. But something inside him had changed—he wasn’t completely powerless anymore.

Hanna reached out slightly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “I don’t get why anyone would want to be mean to you,” she said softly. “It’s not fair.”

Minjun hesitated, then said quietly, “Some people… like to make others react. It’s not really about me.”

“Like online posts?” Hanna asked, her eyes searching his.

He nodded. “Yeah. Rage bait. They provoke, get reactions… it’s exhausting and pointless.”

She smiled. “Well… I’m glad you’re here with me now. Makes the day feel lighter, right?”

Minjun felt a laugh escape, small and genuine. “Yeah… it does.” For a moment, the bullies’ stares seemed less important, almost distant.

Hanna glanced at them, then back at him. “You don’t have to deal with them alone. I can walk with you anytime.”

His chest warmed. “Thanks… Hanna. That means a lot.”

“I like seeing you smile, Minjun,” she said softly. “Makes the hallways less scary.”

They walked in companionable silence for a few steps, ignoring the bullies’ whispers. Then Hanna asked, “Want to sit together at lunch tomorrow?”

Minjun’s heart skipped. “Yeah… I’d like that.”

Hanna grinned. “Not a date… just lunch, okay?”

“Okay… lunch it is,” he replied, a laugh breaking free for the first time in days.

As they reached the classroom, the bullies’ eyes lingered, but Minjun walked confidently beside Hanna. The hallways, filled with whispers and watchful glances, no longer felt threatening. Her presence made the shadows of attention lighter, more manageable.

“See you tomorrow,” Hanna said, waving before stepping inside.

“See you,” Minjun whispered, his chest swelling with a strange, new courage. For the first time, he realized that even when you are noticed, even when others watch and whisper, connection and small acts of bravery could outshine fear.
