The creature's roar shook the clearing.
Kaelith's blast of shadow flame had thrown in back, but not destroyed it. The monster's form rippled, bones rearranging, shadows knitting themselves together as it rose again - taller, sharper, hungrier.
Lyriana wiped blood from her lip, eyes blazing gold. " What in the moon's name is that thing?"
Kaelith didn't look at her." Not mine."
Lyriana scoffed." That's comforting."
The creature lunged.
Kaelith moved first - a blur of black fire and cold precision. Lyriana followed, moonsteel flashing in arcs of silver light. Their attacks collided with the monster from opposite sides, forcing it back step by step.
But the creature didn't weaken.
It adapted.
A tendril of shadow lashed out, catching Lyriana across the ribs. She gasped as she hit the ground hard, vision blurring.
" LYRIANA!"
Kaelith's voice cut through the chaos - sharp, commanding, almost panicked.
The Bond pulsed.
Hard.
Lyriana felt it like a shockwave through her chest - cold, electric, alive. Her breath caught as her heartbeat synced with another rhythm. Not Hers.
His.
Kaelith.
She pushed herself up," What..what is happening?"
Kaelith didn't answer. He couldn't.
The sigil on his chest - hidden beneath armor - flared with black light.
Lyriana's sigil answered with silver fire.
The creature shrieked, recoiling as if burned.
Rhydan shouted from behind them," Lyriana! Your Mark - "
" I know!" she snapped, staggering to her feet.
The Bond pulsed again - stronger this time, pulling her toward Kaelith like gravity.
Kaelith's eyes widened." Stay back."
Lyriana snarled. " Don't tell me what to - "
The creature lunged again, faster than before.
Kaelith moved to intercept - but the monster's tendrils wrapped around him, lifting him off the ground. He choked as the shadows constricted around his throat.
Lyriana's heart lurched.
The Bond screamed.
Pain tore through her chest - not hers, but his. She felt his breath falter, felt the crushing pressure around his ribs, felt the cold darkness closing in.
" Kaelith!"
She didn't think.
She moved.
Moon fire erupted from her hands - wild, uncontrolled, blazing brighter than she had ever summoned before. She launched herself at the creature, slashing through the tendrils with a roar that shook the trees.
The monster shrieked, dropping Kaelith.
He hit the ground hard, coughing, shadows flickering around him.
Lyriana landed beside him, chest heaving." get up."
Kaelith looked at her - really looked at her - silver eyes wide with something she had never seen in him.
Recognition.
" You felt that," he said quietly.
Lyriana swallowed." I felt everything."
The Bond pulsed again - softer this time, almost like a heartbeat shared between them.
The creature roared, gathering itself for another attack.
Kaelith rose slowly, shadows curling around him like armor." It reacts to the Bond."
Lyriana nodded." Then we use it."
Kaelith hesitated." We don't know how."
Lyriana stepped closer, her shoulder brushing his." Then we learn."
The Bond surged - moon fire and shadow flame spiraling together, forming a vortex of light and darkness around them.
The creature recoiled, shrieking.
Kaelith's voice was low." Together?"
Lyriana lifted her blades." Together."
They moved as one.
Moon fire ignited in Lyriana's veins, flowing through her arms in arcs of silver flame. Shadowflame surged from Kaelith's hands, twisting into tendrils of black lightning.
Their power collided - not clashing, but merging.
The Bond guided their steps, their strikes, their breath.
Lyriana slashed through the creature's chest.
Kaelith struck its spine with a spare of shadow.
Moon fire and Shadow flame spiraled around the monster, trapping it in a cage of light and darkness.
The creature screamed - a sound that shook the ground.
Lyriana and Kaelith raised their hands together.
The Bond pulsed.
Their magic exploded.
The blast tore through the creature, ripping it apart in a storm of bone and shadow. Its form dissolved into the air, leaving only silence behind.
Lyriana staggered, breath trembling. " Is it dead?"
Kaelith wiped blood from his lip." for now."
Rhydan rushed to Lyriana's side." Are you hurt?"
Lyriana shook her head - but her eyes stayed locked on Kaelith.
The Bond hummed between them - warm, cold, alive.
Kaelith met her gaze, voice low." This bond.. It's not a curse."
Lyriana swallowed." Then what is it?"
Kaelith stepped closer, Shadows flickering around him. " A beginning."
Lyriana's heart pounded.
The Bond pulsed.
And the world shifted.
