Dawn Crept over the ravin like a reluctant confession.
The battlefield lay silent now - wolves tending their wounded, vampires gathering their dead, both sides watching the center of the clearing with the same expression:
Fear.
Suspicion.
And something dangerously close to awe.
Because in the middle of the blood - soaked ground stood two rulers who should never have stood side by side.
Queen Lyriana Thorne.
King Kaelith Varyn.
Bound.
Linked.
Marked by the same burning sigil.
Lyriana paced the edge of the glowing circle carved into the earth, her movements sharp and restless. Every step tugged at the Bond, pulling at her chest like an invisible leash.
Behind her, Kaelith stood perfectly still - arms folded, expression unreadable, shadows curling lazily around his boots.
Lyriana didn't look at him when she spoke. " We leave now."
Kaelith raised a brow.," You give orders as if I am one of your wolves."
"You're bound to me, she snapped." That makes you my problem."
Kaelith stepped closer, voice low." And you are mine."
The Bond pulsed - annoyed, insistent, alive.
Rhydan, Lyriana's Beta, moved forward with a growl." My Queen, you cannot go with him alone."
Lyriana didn't turn." I won't be alone."
Kaelith's lips curved faintly." Unfortunately."
Rhydan bristled." If he harms you - "
" If I harm her, " Kaelith said coolly," I die. The curse ensure it."
Rhydan's jaw clenched. " Then I hope it hurts."
Kaelith's eyes glinted with amusement.," It already does."
Lyriana shot them both a glare." Enough. We are wasting time."
Kaelith extended a hand.
Lyriana stared at it like it was a venomous snake.," I can walk without your help."
" The Bond disagrees," Kaelith replied." If we separate too far, we collapse. I would prefer not to drag your unconscious body through the forest."
Lyriana's wolves snarled at the insult.
Lyriana ignored them.
She placed her hand in his.
The Bond surged - cold and hot, shadow and moonlight colliding in a shock that stole her breath.
Kaelith's expression flickered for a heartbeat.
Then they began to walk.
The Forest Path
The moment they stepped beyond the ravine, the Bond tightened like a tether, forcing them to stay within a few paces of each other.
Lyriana hated it.
Kaelith seemed merely inconvenienced.
They moved through the ancient forest in tense silence. Trees bent subtly toward Lyriana, recognizing her lunar magic. Shadows parted for Kaelith, bowing to their Sovereign.
Their powers reacted to each other - sometimes clashing, sometimes merging in strange, unpredictable sparks.
At one point, Lyriana stumbled over a root.
Kaelith caught her elbow.
The Bond hummed in approval.
Lyriana jerked away." Don't touch me."
" Then stopped falling," Kaelith said.
" I didn't fall."
" You nearly did."
" I didn't."
Kaelith's lips curved." Stubborn."
Lyriana glared." Arrogant."
They continued walking.
The First Test
Hours later, the forest thinned into a narrow pass between jagged cliffs. The air grew colder, the shadows deeper.
Kaelith slowed." We are being watched."
Lyriana inhaled." I smell them."
A group of rogue wolves emerged from the rocks - scarred, feral , eyes glowing with madness. Not her pack. Not anyone's pack.
Corrupted.
Lyriana stepped forward." Stand down."
The rogues snarled.
Kaelith summoned shadow fire." They won't listen."
Lyriana growled." They are wolves. They will listen to me."
She took another step.
The Bond yanked her back.
Kaelith grabbed her arm." If you go too far, the curse will tear us apart."
Lyriana hissed,"Let go."
Kaelith didn't.
The rogues lunged.
Kaelith moved first - shadow fire slicing through the air. Lyriana followed, moon steel flashing. They fought in perfect, terrifying sync, their movements instinctively aligned as if the bond guided their steps.
Lyriana slashed through one rogue's throat.
Kaelith impaled another with a spear of shadow.
A third leapt at Lyriana's back -
Kaelith was there before she sensed it, crushing the wolf's skull with cold precision.
Lyriana spun, breathless." I didn't need your help."
Kaelith wiped blood from his fingers. " You did."
Lyriana's eyes blazed. " I would have killed it."
Kaelith stepped closer, voice low." I know."
The Bond pulsed - hot, sharp, undeniable.
Lyriana looked away first.
Nightfall
They made camp beneath a twisted oak, the sky darkening above them.
Lyriana sat on the one side of the fire. Kaelith sat on the other.
The bond forced them closer.
Lyriana scowled." This is humiliating."
Kaelith's voice was calm." This is necessary."
She glared at him." Do you enjoy this?"
"No."
"Liar."
Kaelith met her gaze, silver eyes steady." I do not enjoy being bound to someone who despises me."
Lyriana's breath caught.
For the first time, he sounded...tired.
Not weak.
Not vulnerable.
Just tired.
She looked away." We break the curse. Then we go back to killing each other.
Kaelith's voice was quite." If that is what you wish."
Lyriana didn't answer.
The Bond pulsed - soft, questioning, almost curious.
Kaelith leaned back against the tree, closing his eyes.
" Sleep, Moon - Queen. We have a long journey ahead."
Lyriana hesitated.
Then, reluctantly, she lay down beside him - close enough to keep the Bond calm, far enough to pretend she didn't feel his presence like a cold star beside her.
The fire crackled.
The Bond hummed.
And for the first time since the Bond Eclipse, Lyriana dreamed of shadows.
And Kaelith dreamed of moonlight.
