Chapter 2 — The Man Behind the Glass
Taehyung woke before the alarm. He always did.
The ceiling above him was unfamiliar—too pristine, too empty. A room prepared for him, not lived in. Just like the marriage waiting for him in a few hours. ~Wedding day~....
The word felt strange, like it belonged to someone else.
Taehyung sat up slowly, fingers pressing into the mattress as if grounding himself. Emotions were dangerous things. He had learned that early—learned it so thoroughly that even now, years later, his chest tightened at the thought of letting anything show.
An omega CEO could not afford softness.
The world watched him constantly, waiting for weakness. Waiting for proof that he didn’t belong where he stood.
And now they would watch him marry.
He moved through the morning on instinct—shower, suit, cufflinks. Everything controlled. Everything exact.
The mirror reflected a man composed to perfection.
Cold eyes.
Straight spine.
A face that revealed nothing.
Good, he thought. This is what they expect.
Yet his thoughts betrayed him.
Jeon Jungkook.
An alpha too quiet for his own good. Too gentle. Too willing. From the moment Jungkook had agreed to the contract without argument, Taehyung had known something was wrong.
Alphas didn’t give up power so easily.
He remembered that meeting vividly.
The way Jungkook listened instead of interrupting.
The way he smiled—not charming, not strategic—just… sincere.
The way he said I understand like it wasn’t a burden.
It unsettled Taehyung more than cruelty ever could.
The contract had been clear.
This marriage was protection. Stability. Public image.
Nothing more.
That was what Taehyung told himself when he signed his name. What he told himself when he agreed to share a home. What he told himself now, standing on the edge of something irreversible.
Still, fear whispered.
What if he regrets it?
What if he leaves once the novelty fades?
Taehyung had seen it before—people who promised permanence until it became inconvenient. He had learned to survive by leaving first, emotionally if not physically.
He would not beg.
He would not cling.
He would not love where he could be abandoned.
So he built walls.
And if Jungkook stayed behind them, that would be his choice.
At the venue, the noise was distant—voices blending into a dull hum. Advisors greeted him. Cameras flashed. Expectations pressed down on his shoulders like weight.
“Are you ready?” someone asked.
Taehyung nodded.
He always was.
Jungkook was already waiting at the altar when Taehyung entered.
He looked calm. Steady. As if this wasn’t terrifying.
For just a second, Taehyung faltered.
Jungkook’s eyes softened when they met—no demand in them, no possession. Just presence.
Something twisted in Taehyung’s chest.
Don’t, he warned himself. Don’t mistake kindness for safety.
He took his place beside Jungkook.
The vows were spoken. Promises exchanged that sounded permanent even if neither of them knew what they truly meant.
When it was over, applause filled the room.
Jungkook leaned slightly closer and whispered, “Are you okay?”
Not happy.
Not excited.
Okay.
Taehyung nodded once. “Yes.”
It was the most honest answer he could give.
That night, alone in the shared house, Taehyung stood outside Jungkook’s room longer than necessary.
He raised his hand—then let it fall.
Walls were safer.
Turning away, he told himself this marriage was exactly what it was meant to be.
A contract.
Nothing more.
...But as he lay awake in the dark, one thought refused to leave him alone: Jungkook hadn’t looked like someone preparing to leave. He had looked like someone preparing to stay......
......End......
