DARE YOU TO DEATH SAMPLE FULL NOVEL.

CHAPTER 4

Jay woke up disoriented. He shook his head slightly to clear the confusion.Looking at his friends sleeping on the floor surrounded by liquor and beerbottles, he remembered how drunk they were. He got up and went to thebathroom to try and clear the dizzy feeling. He had completely forgotten what happened before he fell asleep. Nomatter how hard he tried to remember, he couldn't. He splashed water on hisface to clear his head and then went out to wake his friends up one by one."Time, wake up." After waking up Time, who was lying with one leg overBell, Jay went to get his phone to check the time. He remembered that hisphone was about to run out of battery. Pressing the button, the screen wasblack, so he went to wake Bell up and grabbed his phone with a pink caseon it to check the time.It was four o'clock. He didn't know if they could all make it home in thatstate."I'm fucking drunk," Time said, getting up along with Bell, who wasgroaning and stretching."My back hurts. What's wrong with me?""Maybe you're turning into a ghost.""Come on, someone who's in hell can't insult me," Bell replied irritably, before waking up Cherine, who was beside her."Time, help wake the others.""Yeah, yeah." Time stood up, shaking her fiery red hair, and went to wakethe others, until she reached Puifai, who was lying next to a cooler. When he touched her skin, he immediately pulled his hand back because itwas abnormally cold, colder than it should be in an air-conditioned room."Puifai, why are you so cold? Are you okay?"The others slowly woke up, stretching to ease the discomfort of sleeping onthe tiled floor, not paying attention to Time's screams."Puifai, do you hear me?""Why are you screaming, Time?""Guys, Puifai isn't waking up and her body is freezing." Time looked atPuifai again before putting her hand under her nose. She immediatelypulled back."Guys! Puifai isn't breathing!""What are you saying, you idiot? Wake her up so we can go home.""You don't believe me, come and see!"Bell sighed, irritated, and walked over to Puifai, who was lying on the floorwith a pale face. She stopped when she saw how different her friend looked, who was once full of life and now seemed lifeless. Bell put his hand underPuifai's nose like Time had done, and when he couldn't feel her breathing,he screamed loudly and backed away."She's dead! Puifai's dead!""This isn't funny anymore," Cherine said, her expression serious as shewatched her friends' reaction."This is no joke! What do we do, Jay? This is crazy!" Bell began to panicand pace back and forth. The situation was tense and everyone looked atPuifai's motionless body."Call an ambulance," Jay said, looking at Puifai."Tonkla, call an ambulance!" Tonkla, still in shock, reached for his phone, but Cherine stopped him."I'll call. Go check on Champ," he said, as he dialed the number.Champ was in shock, pale and with tears in his eyes."Champ, calm down.""What are we going to do? Are we going to jail?" Tar said, standing up."Jail? We were just drinking!""Was it your fault, Tar? Did you give him too much alcohol?""This is crazy! Is he going to die from the alcohol?""Who knows?! He was never very strong!" The voices of shouting andarguing filled the room."Time, give me your phone. I'm going to call Jade.""Wait, are you going to call the police?" Tar said immediately."I'm going to call Jade. He can come along with the ambulance.""Are you crazy?! What if they blame us? Are we going to go to jail?" Bellscreamed, trying to leave, but Jay grabbed her arm."Are you going to leave Puifai like this?" The room fell silent, onlyCherine's sobs could be heard."Puifai, please wake up. Wake up, please. Don't do this to us." At thismoment, the small hope that it was all a joke was fading.Everyone was caught up in their own thoughts, confused, scared, uncomfortable, stressed, worried, and distrustful. The sound of the ambulance in front of the building made everyone look ateach other. Jay ran to open the door to call the ambulance and found aparamedic running towards them with a briefcase of medical equipment."Where is the injured man?" he asked in a deep, hurried voice. Although hewas wearing a mask, the doctor's seriousness could be guessed, as Cherinehad reported that her friend had hypothermia and had stopped breathingafter drinking alcohol with the group. The doctor approached the person lying motionless, placed the stethoscopeon the left side of the chest, frowned, and then moved it under the chest. Heexamined various parts of the body while the seven friends watchedanxiously. After a thorough examination, he took off the stethoscope andlooked at the young people watching him."She... has passed away." The last hope vanished. Everyone showed theirsadness and disappointment in different ways: crying, silent, in shock."Hello, may I speak to Captain Jade, please?"(What do you wish to report?)"I'm Jay, Lieutenant Prai."As he had been to the station many times, he recognized the voices andnames of the officers there.(Oh, Jay, wait a moment, I'll transfer the call to theCaptain.)Jay waited on the line and soon heard a familiar voice.(Where have you been drinking that you haven't come home?)"Brother... I want to report something."(What do you want to report? Are you drunk and lost the car or was there afight?) Jay sighed before looking at the situation in front of him.(What's wrong?)"Puifai... she's dead, bro. We were drinking last night and got really drunk. When it got light, she wasn't breathing anymore. We've already called theambulance."(How many are there?)"Eight people."(Are you sure they were all so drunk that they fell asleep?)"I'm sure, because I remember I was the last one to fall asleep."(I'm going over there. Don't touch anything and everyone stay in that room.No one is to leave.) The noise on the other end of the line made Jay awarethat his brother was doing something.(Is the doctor still there?)"Yes."(I want to talk to him.) Jay took the phone to the emergency doctor who hadarrived."Hello, I'm the emergency doctor from xxx hospital."(Hello, I'm a police officer. Can I get details about the deceased's body? Areyou sure she's really dead?)"Yes, you can send your medical examiner to confirm or I can take her tothe hospital's autopsy department."(Not yet, I need to inspect the scene first. I'll arrive in fifteen minutes.)"Okay." After the conversation, the young doctor handed the phone back toJay. When he hung up, the atmosphere immediately became tense.Everyone was shocked and confused by what had happened, and they beganto think of the first thing they should do: run away from the problem."Where are you going, Tar?""I'm going home.""How can you leave? The police haven't arrived yet.""You stay, I'm leaving." Jay grabbed his friend's arm and pushed himagainst the wall in frustration."What's wrong, Tar? Puifai was your friend too. She was drinking with uslast night. Shouldn't we stay until the police arrive? What are you so afraidof?"Everyone fell silent. It's not like they'd never drunk together before, butnothing this serious had ever happened."Doctor, do you know the cause of my friend's death?""Right now we can't say the cause of death because we haven't investigatedanything. But, given the situation, there could be several causes, such ashypothermia or acute heart failure. Did the deceased have any pre-existingillnesses?" Everyone looked at Champ, who was holding Puifai's handwithout saying anything."I... I don't know.""How can you not know, Champ? You were the closest to her.""I told you I don't know!""Puifai had anemia... and I don't know anymore.""It's your fault for inviting her to drink," Bell shouted from the middle ofthe group of friends."And you too. You knew she was sick and you still let her drink.""It's not fair, Bell. No one stopped her and everyone agreed. You can't justblame Cherine."Tonkla stood up and stood between Bell and Cherine when she saw Bellwas going to confront Cherine."Regardless of whether he died from a pre-existing condition or somethingelse, at least we shouldn't be held responsible, right? We're not involved. Atworst, we could be charged with negligence that resulted in someone else'sdeath. That's all, I think."The arguments continued unabated. The group of friends, who manyenvied, were now calling each other names and shifting blame to oneanother. The sound of a car outside caused everyone to fall silent and gathernervously. The first person to enter was Jade, followed by the new inspectorand two more police officers. The coroner and two members of the evidencecollection team entered the scene and began to work."Jade," Jay said as he approached his older brother, before glancingsideways at the person standing next to him.He remembered this person; it was someone he had seen at the pub thenight before."I can't be in charge of this case because you're my brother. InspectorKamin will be taking the case.""Inspector?""Hello, I'm Kamin. Now we need everyone to help by staying in the areauntil we've collected all the evidence. You may all need to go to the stationto give a statement before we get the autopsy results to determine the causeof death.""B-but we have a wedding tomorrow, and there's also the matter of ourparents.""I'll take care of that. Now everyone stay calm.Officer, please take care of the forensic part.""Okay." Jade looked at his brother once more before turning to the forensicofficers of the police department to make sure that the body lying there wasreally lifeless."The deceased is called Pawarisa, twenty-two years old. She has passedaway, probably from acute heart failure." Jade nodded and then allowed thehospital doctor to take Puitai's body to the autopsy room to determine thecause of death, and he would follow them later."The seven of you must go to the station to give your statement first.Once we get the autopsy results and confirm that it was a natural death, wewill let you go.""What?" Cherine, who had barely stopped crying, stopped."Why do they have to hold us back when it was an accident? We didn't do anything to Puifai," Tar said determinedly."It's standard procedure. We need your cooperation.""And if I refuse?" Kamin raised an eyebrow at the young manin front of him."Why are you so nervous if you say you didn't do anything? What are you afraid of?" Kamin's question made the young man stopimmediately."Tar, stop it. Why are you looking for trouble with the officer?" Jayinterjected before looking at Kamin."Excuse my friend, he's upset about the loss of our friend.""No problem. Everyone, follow the officers to the car." Kamin ordered twoofficers to take the seven young men in two cars to the station, and hewould follow them.Looking around the place, there was only one door for entry and exit. Theair conditioning was set to eighteen degrees.Around it were some small welding equipment. In the center, there were liquor bottles, beer cans, snack bags, and plasticfood containers scattered around. It looked like a typical social gathering."I want to work on this case too.""Your brother is still a suspect, so you can't.""I have the right to work on this case because you need my help." Kaminlooked at Jade, who was beside him. The latter looked at him moreseriously than ever, arms crossed."Give me one reason why I should need your help.""One, I'm the officer in charge of this police station. Two, I'm good at myjob." Kamin rolled his eyes without hiding his irritation."And finally, Jay called me saying that he and his friends were drinkingthemselves to sleep. Before that, he called me to say that he wouldn't becoming home, but he fell asleep before he ended the call. I heard footstepsand the sound of a beer can being kicked before the line went dead.""You say someone wasn't asleep?""Yes, someone woke up after everyone fell asleep.""So, could it have happened at that time?""Now will you let me help?""Okay. But if I see you cross the line in this case, whether it's because ofyour brother or any other reason, I'll take you off the case immediately.""Understood.""There are two things we need to do from now on.First, separate the seven young men and question them one by one.""And second, get the autopsy results to determine the cause of Puifai'sdeath, right?""Yes.""I know your thoughts so well, it seems like we'll work together withoutany problems.""Knowing me so well, you'll probably become very annoying."Kamin forced a smile before returning to giving orders to his evidencecollection team, ignoring Jade behind him. Jade stopped smiling and lookedat the liquor glasses scattered on the floor. All of the glasses were empty, which was unusual. There was not a drop of alcohol left in any of the eightglasses.
