Morning arrived gently.
Sunlight slipped through the curtains, painting soft patterns across the room. Taehyung groaned quietly, rolling onto his side and burying his face into his pillow. For once, waking up didn’t feel heavy.
Until—
“Taehyung.”
His eyes flew open.
Jungkook stood near the door, hair still slightly damp, a loose T-shirt clinging to him comfortably. He looked unfairly good for someone who had clearly just woken up.
“You’re staring,” Jungkook said, amused.
Taehyung blinked, then turned his face away instantly. “I’m not.”
Jungkook laughed softly. “You were.”
“I made breakfast,” Jungkook replied casually. “You didn’t eat properly yesterday.”
That simple sentence made Taehyung pause.
You didn’t eat properly.
Not I was hungry.
Not I made too much.
Just… concern.
“Oh,” Taehyung said quietly. “Okay.”
The kitchen smelled warm and comforting—toast, eggs, and something sweet. Taehyung sat at the table while Jungkook moved around with practiced ease.
“You cook well,” Taehyung commented.
Jungkook shrugged. “I learned when I moved out. Didn’t want to survive on instant noodles forever.
Taehyung smiled. “That sounds like you.”
They ate together in comfortable silence, the kind that didn’t demand conversation. Taehyung noticed how Jungkook always pushed the slightly better-looking pieces of food toward him without saying anything.
“You do that on purpose,” Taehyung said suddenly.
Jungkook froze. “Do what?”
“Give me the nicer pieces.”
Jungkook scratched the back of his neck, caught. “Habit.”
Taehyung’s chest felt strangely full.
Later that day, they went out together.
Not a date.
Not not a date either.
Just… together.
They walked through a small street market nearby. Taehyung stopped at almost every stall, eyes lighting up like a kid’s.
“Look at this!” he said, holding up a tiny wind chime.
Jungkook leaned closer. “You like noisy things?”
“It’s not noise,” Taehyung argued. “It’s music.”
Jungkook smiled. “Then buy it.”
Taehyung hesitated. “I don’t need it.”
Five minutes later, Jungkook paid for it anyway.
“Hey—!”
“Too late,” Jungkook said, handing it to him. “Consider it… repayment.”
“For what?”
“For making things warmer around me,” Jungkook said softly.
Taehyung stared at him, heart skipping. “You say things like that too easily.”
Jungkook met his gaze. “Only because it’s true.”
They stopped by a small café to escape the afternoon heat.
Taehyung chose a corner seat near the window. Jungkook sat across from him, elbows on the table, chin resting on his hand.
“You’re staring again,” Taehyung muttered.
“I like looking at you,” Jungkook replied, too easily.
Taehyung choked on his drink. “Jungkook!”
“What?” Jungkook laughed. “You’re expressive. It’s cute.”
Taehyung glared, but the smile tugging at his lips betrayed him.
Cute.
The word echoed in his mind longer than it should have.
The mood shifted slightly when a group nearby laughed loudly, one of them glancing at Taehyung a bit too long.
Jungkook noticed.
Without saying anything, he moved his chair closer—so close their knees touched beneath the table.
Taehyung looked up. “What are you doing?”
Jungkook didn’t look away from the group. “Sitting.”
“But—”
“Relax,” Jungkook said quietly. “I’m here.”
Those three words settled something deep inside Taehyung.
The group eventually left. Jungkook didn’t move away immediately.
Neither did Taehyung.
That evening, rain started falling again—soft, steady.
They stood on the balcony, watching the world blur into grey and gold. The wind chime Jungkook had bought tinkled gently.
“It sounds nice,” Jungkook said.
Taehyung nodded. “It does.”
Silence stretched, heavy but not uncomfortable.
“Taehyung,” Jungkook said suddenly.
“Hmm?”
“Can I ask you something?”
Taehyung turned to face him. “Okay.”
Jungkook hesitated, jaw tightening slightly. “If… things ever got complicated—would you walk away?”
Taehyung frowned. “From what?”
“From us,” Jungkook admitted.
Taehyung’s breath caught. “Us?”
Jungkook swallowed. “I mean—whatever this is.”
Taehyung didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he stepped closer.
“I don’t run from things that feel real,” he said softly. “Even if they scare me.”
Jungkook looked at him, eyes dark and searching.
For a moment—just one—it felt like something might finally cross the invisible line between them.
Jungkook’s hand lifted slightly.
Taehyung’s heart pounded.
Then—
Jungkook dropped his hand.
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “Me neither.”
Almost.
But not yet.
That night, Taehyung lay awake, staring at the ceiling again.
But this time, his thoughts weren’t restless.
They were warm.
He replayed Jungkook’s words, his closeness, the way he chose Taehyung without making it obvious.
Almost.
The thought didn’t hurt.
It made him smile.
Some things were worth waiting for.
