During the two months he spent recovering, Wu Qi Qiong called Yue Yue several times, trying to arrange a meeting, but she never agreed. She told him,
“When you’re headed, we’ll talk. In the meantime, reflect on yourself.”
Wanting to see Yue Yue as soon as possible, Wu Qi Qiong cooperated fully with his treatment. He didn’t eat anything that was off-limits, and later even stopped using his phone, afraid that the radiation might slow his recovery. At last, he made it through. Once Yue Yue heard he was fully healed, she agreed to meet. This time, it wasn’t in the alley. It was by the lake in a park – definitely no bricks around. Wu Qi Qiong arrived early, standing by the lake with the breeze gently blowing. Compared to his previous scruffy appearance, he looked clean and presentable now. He was even wearing the T-shirt Yue Yue had bought him for his birthday back in sophomore year. He’d gained weight after that and couldn’t wear it anymore, but he tried it on yesterday…and it fit again. Yue Yue’s fair little face practically glowed in the sunlight – bright and radiant. Her figure was flawless too, the perfect balance of curves and elegance. As she walked toward him, every cell in Wu Qi Qiong’s body screamed with excitement. After so many days apart, his heart itched like it was being clawed by a cat. When Yue Yue saw him, she showed only a flash of surprise – no other expression.
“Why have you lost so much weight?”
“Missed you too much,”
Wu Qi Qiong said, reaching out to brush a strand of hair from her forehead.
“You said I was fat, so I worked hard to lose it. I haven’t reached perfect shape yet, but I’ll keep trying.”
Yue Yue coldly dodged his touch.Wu Qi qiong leaned closer.
“You said we should think things through. Have you figured it out?”
“I have. Let’s break up.”
Even though it was the second time he’d heard her say it, it still stabbed his heart like a blade.
“Why? You said I was fat – I immediately started losing weight. What more do you want me to do?”
Yue Yue stayed blunt and firm.
“Wu Qi Qiong, like I said, it’s not just about the weight. You don’t even understand the kind of life I want. I don’t want to settle down young, cooking and cleaning for the rest of my life. I don’t want to spend years trudging through endless markets and discount racks. Do you get that?”
Wu Qi Qiong stared at her stubbornly.
“So you’re saying I’m too cheap for you?”
“It’s not about being cheap!”
Yue Yue snapped, clearly frustrated.
“Why can’t you understand? With your current situation and career prospects, even if you weren’t stingy, it wouldn’t change anything.”
“What do you mean I have no prospects? I work at a state-owned enterprise! Tons of people would kill for that job. Sure, my salary isn’t high now, but in a few years, once I become an engineer, I’ll be making fifty, sixty thousand years!”
“Tsk tsk… fifty, sixty thousand? That’ll buy you one square meter of an apartment, huh?”
All of Wu Qi Qiong’s earlier enthusiasm was blown away by the chill autumn breeze.
“Yue Yue, you weren’t like this before! Back in school, you always said you didn’t care about anything, that all you wanted was to be with me forever.”
“That was just being polite – couldn’t you tell?”
Yue Yue scoffed, her expression souring.
“I thought you’d take it the right way. That you’d be moved, feel the pressure, and become determined to succeed! But no – you took it literally. You really believed I wanted nothing! Every day, that satisfied look on your face – always going on about your ‘state-owned enterprise’ like it’s some golden ticket. I don’t know where you even get that smugness from!”
Wu Qi Qiong had nothing left to say.
“Alright, I’ve said what I needed to say. From today on, we…”
“I could still die for you,”
Wu Qi Qiong interrupted her, forcing the words out.Yue Yue’s eyes darkened, a storm of frustration in her expression.
“Don’t you get tired of using the same trick twice? And besides, we’re standing on grass—where are you going to find a brick?”
To her shock, Wu Qi Qiong suddenly gave a strange, eerie smile.
“Just a brick, right?”
With that, he turned and walked toward a big tree behind them. Right under YueYue’s nose, he dug under the soil beneath the tree and pulled out a brick he had hidden there beforehand… Same big forehead, same exact spot, same brutal force – except this time, he gritted his teeth and stayed conscious.
“Wu Qi qiong, you’re not even human!!!”
Yue Yue cursed him, but she still rushedover, teeth clenched in fury, and supported him as they walked out of the park.
