The next day, in the cafeteria, Jackson spread a large blueprint of the school’s library across the table. The building was massive, labyrinthine, and easy to get lost in. Damon raised an eyebrow.
“How did you even get your hands on that?” he asked.
Jackson stammered, scratching the back of his head. “Uh… my brother used to… you know… study the library too. He left some… plans behind. Helps in… emergencies.”
Damon smirked slightly but didn’t push it. They both studied the map carefully.
The plan was simple but risky: enter through the vents, bypass the locks on the professors’ section, and reach the ancient books where knowledge about supernaturals was stored. Every step needed precision.
Night fell. Jackson and Damon slipped into the vents. The metal was cold beneath their hands. A section of the vent grating almost gave way under Jackson’s weight. He slipped—but Damon reacted instantly, grabbing him and keeping him from falling.
“Careful,” Damon muttered.
They crawled silently, the faint echo of their breathing the only sound. When they reached the professors’ library, the vast hall stretched below them like a temple of knowledge. They carefully dropped down, landing softly on the polished floor.
Then, footsteps.
A lone professor, working late, appeared near the stacks. Jackson froze.
As they crept forward, Jackson accidentally bumped into a book. It fell loudly to the floor.
“Who’s there?!” the professor’s voice boomed. “If you don’t show yourselves, I’m calling security!”
Jackson stepped forward, hands raised, trying to keep calm.
Professor Raymond’s eyes narrowed. “Jackson… just like your brother. Tell me—why are you breaking into the professors’ library?”
Jackson forced a smile, trying to lighten the tension. “Hey, Professor Raymond. How’s it going?”
The professor didn’t smile. Damon stepped forward, serious.
“We’re looking for books… about ancient mythology. Supernatural creatures,” Damon said.
Professor Raymond’s eyebrows rose. “Damon…? And you, teenage boys, are interested in myths?”
Jackson and Damon’s serious expressions convinced him. Curiosity replaced suspicion.
“Which creature, exactly?” the professor asked.
Jackson spoke quietly, “Werewolves.”
The professor stroked his beard thoughtfully. “Mortal shapeshifters,” he said. He reached for a thick, aged book on his desk. “I’ve been studying them too. Mythical creatures,Powerful beings… especially in ancient times. There’s a story of a necromancer who cast a spell on mortals as punishment for a heinous crime. That’s how some became what you’d call werewolves.”
Jackson and Damon exchanged tense glances, the weight of the information sinking in.
Jackson leaned closer, flipping through the pages. “Is there anything about their powers… how one becomes a werewolf?”
Professor Raymond shook his head. “Not here… not in this book. But if you truly want to learn, you can come to my house. I’ll show you more—but do not break in again. You understand?”
Both boys nodded immediately.
“Thank you, Professor,” Jackson said, his voice calm. Damon echoed the gratitude.
As they slipped out of the library into the night, the tension lifted slightly—but the questions only grew.
Some truths were hidden in the shadows… and others waited to be found.
Chapter 3 (continued) — Wolves in the Shadows
Back in their dorm, Jackson slumped onto his bed, still reeling. “How did Professor Raymond know all of that?” he muttered. “He didn’t even touch the book when he was explaining. looks like we’re not the only one.”
Damon leaned back in his chair. “He has to know something.”
Jackson’s eyes narrowed. “You think we should go to his house?”
Damon nodded. “Yeah. It’s our only lead to figure this out.”
Jackson paused, then gave a slow nod. “Alright… I’m onboard.”
Damon stood up suddenly. “But first… we need to go back to the wolves in the woods.”
Jackson’s jaw dropped. “Are you crazy?! You want to go back there? Back to where we almost got eaten alive? no way”
Damon’s voice was calm. “We’re going… but during the day. That makes it safer.”
Jackson exhaled slowly. “…a little comfort, I guess.”
When they reached the woods, the place was eerily quiet. But instead of wolves, they saw two groups of humans—men and teenage boys—arguing heatedly in separate clusters.
“They’re arguing about us,” Damon murmured.
Jackson squinted, confused.
Zoom in: One man barked, “Boyd, there’s no way we could have killed them! Even if we could, a Spellcaster was with them!”
Zoom back to Damon and Jackson.
Jackson’s eyes widened. “Dude… they’re miles away from here. How can you hear that?”
Damon didn’t answer immediately. “I don’t know. I just know. It happened.”
From the shadows, a girl stepped forward. Her red eyes glowed like embers.
Jackson froze. Recognition hit him. “Wait a sec… you’re the girl from the cafeteria! But… your eyes……the hot gets hotter”
“You’re one of them,” Damon said softly. “A werewolf?”
Jackson’s mind raced. “Yeah… just like the wolves from that night.”
Damon nodded. “Then that means the guys arguing… they’re werewolves too.”
The girl’s eyes glowed brighter. “Who is Professor Raymond… you weren’t supposed to tell humans about us or anything supernatural! You and the cute boy have some explaining to do.” Jackson eyes narrowed “How did you know about the professor…must have been following haven’t you”
Damon’s gaze locked with hers. Suddenly, he pictured the wolf that had stalked him since the night he killed the man. The chilling presence he had felt.
“You’re that wolf,” he whispered. “The one that’s been following me all this time… aren’t you?”
The girl smirked. “Bingo,” she said. “And we finally found you.”
A man with an intimidating presence stepped forward from the shadows.
Jackson’s eyes widened. “Wait… weren’t you from that direction? How did you…?”
“Super speed,” the girl said casually. “And yes… we’re werewolves too.”
Jackson blinked. Then she introduced herself. “I’m Talia Paige. That’s my brother… Ethan Paige.”
Ethan stepped forward. His expression serious. “You haven’t discovered yourselves yet. You need to follow us.”
Jackson froze. “No way in hell. I’m a Spellcaster—I don’t just follow anyone!”
Ethan’s voice was calm but firm. “Spellcasters and werewolves have coexisted for generations. You don’t know yet… but this world has rules. Come with me. I need to show you something.”
Jackson and Damon exchanged glances. They had no choice. They had to follow.
The forest swallowed them, shadows and secrets waiting ahead.
