Chapter Four: When Silence Began to Break

Silence can protect you.

For a while.

It hides your feelings.

It keeps you safe.

It saves you from rejection.

But silence is never permanent.

One day, it becomes heavy.

One day, it becomes painful.

One day, it starts to suffocate.

And that day came with rain.

It was a quiet evening, the kind where the sky looks tired and the air feels heavy. Dark clouds covered everything, and the streets were almost empty. We had just left our favorite café, walking side by side without really talking. The sound of raindrops hitting the road slowly filled the space between us.

When the rain became stronger, we stopped under a small shelter near the bus stop.

It was the same place where we had waited together so many times before.

Yet that evening felt different.

He stood close to me, his hands in his pockets, staring at the road. I could feel his presence, warm and familiar, yet distant at the same time. My heart was restless, as if it knew something was about to change.

Minutes passed.

No words.

Just rain.

Just tension.

Finally, he spoke.

“Are you okay?” he asked softly.

I looked at him and forced a smile. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

A lie.

He knew it.

He always did.

“You haven’t been yourself lately,” he said. “You’re quieter. You don’t joke with me like before. Sometimes… you feel far away.”

My chest tightened.

So he noticed.

All this time, I thought he didn’t see me.

“I’m just tired,” I replied.

Another lie.

He stepped a little closer. “You don’t have to pretend with me,” he said. “Not with me.”

Those words almost broke me.

Because pretending was all I knew.

The rain fell harder, as if it was trying to drown my thoughts.

“I saw you with her,” I said suddenly.

The sentence escaped my lips before I could stop it.

He turned to me, confused. “With who?”

“The girl you like,” I whispered.

He froze.

“What?” he asked.

“You’re always smiling with her. Always texting her. Always walking with her,” I said, trying to sound calm. “Anyone can see it.”

His eyes widened.

“That’s not what you think,” he said quickly.

“Then what is it?” I asked.

My voice shook.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t hiding my paiN.

He looked away, running his hand through his hair.

“I didn’t want you to misunderstand,” he murmured.

“Misunderstand what?” I asked.

“That I care about someone else… more than you.”

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?” I whispered.

He laughed nervously. “It’s stupid. Forget it.”

“No,” I said, surprising even myself. “Tell me.”

He hesitated.

The rain slowed.

The world seemed to hold its breath.

“I was scared,” he finally admitted. “Scared of losing you.”

“Why would you lose me?” I asked.

“Because…” He paused. “Because I like you.”

I felt dizzy.

“What?” I breathed.

“I’ve liked you for a long time,” he continued. “I just never had the courage to say it. I thought if I did, things would change. I thought you’d walk away.”

He looked at me now.

Really looked.

No masks.

No lies.

No hiding.

“I talked to other girls because I was trying to convince myself that I didn’t love you,” he confessed. “But it never worked.”

Three words escaped his lips.

“I love you.”

Soft.

Honest.

Terrifying.

In that moment, everything I had ever felt rushed back to me.

All the silent tears.

All the hidden prayers.

All the unspoken dreams.

The rain kept falling.

But inside me…

A storm finally ended.
