(A Glimpse, A Secret)

The girl didn’t stop. Her gaze rose past my face, locking onto something deep within the crowd. There was no anger in her expression—only the cold, sharp concentration of a predator, as if her prey were trying to slip through her fingers.

"Move," she said, her voice piercing.

It was then that I felt it... the air was growing hot. The atmosphere around her began to shift. Her breathing was heavy, and a strange, deep, burning glow ignited in her eyes. Suddenly, a shadow darted through the crowd with terrifying speed. Its feet were on the ground, but its movements were not human. I caught a fleeting glimpse of its eyes: red, restless, and hungry.

A Demon.

"There he is," the girl whispered, and in the next heartbeat, she lunged forward.

The market-goers scrambled back. Some screamed; others turned to bolt. As she ran, she clenched her fist.

Fsshhh...

With every breath she took, a crimson shimmer rippled through the air, as if the very atmosphere were breathing fire. For a split second, her shadow on the ground seemed to transform. My heart hammered against my ribs. The demon let out a shriek and vanished into the thick of the crowd, while the girl leaped onto a rooftop. She looked down from above, her eyes meeting mine for the first time.

"Get out of the way," she commanded.

Her voice was icy, yet it carried a hidden tremor of urgency. Suddenly, I noticed the air becoming heavy with moisture. Despite the sweltering heat of the bazaar, an abrupt, chilling breeze swept through. A shadow blurred past the crowd—it looked almost human.

"Found you," she said.

She gave chase, leaving a thin trail of dampness on the ground beneath her feet, as if water itself were following her every step. She reached out her hand.

Shhhhhh...

Droplets of water manifested out of thin air. Water from nearby clay pots, fountains, and even the humidity in the air began to spiral toward her. Within seconds, a swirling current of living water circled her hand.

The crowd recoiled in terror. The demon tried to flee, but she slammed her fist shut... and the water surged forward like a high-pressure jet, cutting off the demon's path. A wall of water rose from the cobblestones. The demon stood trapped, flickering like a shadow, its eyes burning with rage and hunger. People cowered behind shop stalls.

The girl pulled a small silver vial from her waist. It wasn't an ordinary bottle; it was etched with ancient runes that pulsed with a faint blue light. Without a trace of hesitation, she uncapped it.

The moment the seal broke... the wind began to howl in a localized vortex.

The demon struggled to escape, but the thin streams of water wrapped around it like chains, spinning into a cyclone. The creature shrieked, its red eyes flaring one last time before its body began to dissolve like smoke. With a violent tug of spiritual gravity, the demon was pulled into the silver vial.

She calmly replaced the cap.

A heavy silence fell over the bazaar. Slowly, people began to emerge from their hiding places. The terror on their faces turned to relief. Someone sighed deeply; others folded their hands in prayer.

"We’re saved..."

"Thank you..."

Voices rose from all sides, offering gratitude, but she remained distant. There was no pride on her face, no smile—just the look of someone finishing a mundane chore. She moved to tuck the vial away, but as she did, a small jade locket snapped from her belt and fell to the ground. She didn't seem to notice.

"Wait, your—" I started to say.

But before I could finish, she had already turned away. She vanished into the crowd with impossible speed. I knelt and picked up the jade. It was no common stone; a faint green light pulsed within its depths, and it bore a delicate, royal crest—an emblem far too noble for a common hunter.

This girl was no ordinary mercenary; she belonged to a Great House.

I tried to follow her, pushing through the throng of people, but she was gone. There was no lingering mist, no footprint—only a mystery that had dissolved into the air. I stared at the jade in my hand, its soft glow still alive. My mind raced with questions: Who was she? Will I ever see her again?

Lost in thought, I stumbled upon a large gathering. People were talking excitedly in hushed, urgent tones. I moved closer to listen.

"Did you hear?" a man asked enthusiastically. "Before the coming 'Disaster,' there’s going to be a Grand Competition in the Northeast... in the Element District!"

Another man chimed in, "Yes! Students from every corner of the Pradhan Kingdom are coming for the trials. They say this time, it won't just be about strength... it’ll be about destiny."

My heart skipped a beat.

The Element District—the heart of the Five Elemental Powers. A competition drawing the elite from across the realm. Surely... she would be there.

My hand tightened around the jade locket. Its cold surface felt like a compass, pushing me in a single direction.

"Maybe... she’ll be there," I whispered to myself.

A new resolve sparked within me. As the voices of the crowd faded into the background, I turned my back on the market and set my sights toward the Element District.
