Chapter Four — The Dragon Clan Trials

The storm had passed, leaving the Northern Wastes eerily silent.

Lyra stood at the base of a colossal obsidian gate carved with dragon runes that glowed faintly in the twilight. Behind her, Kael adjusted his cloak, silver hair brushing against the rising wind. The dragons perched on jagged cliffs, their wings folding like living shadows.

“This is it,” Kael said quietly. “The Dragon Clans. They don’t bow lightly. They test every Sovereign before loyalty is granted.”

Lyra’s fingers flexed, water spiraling around her wrist, fire crackling faintly in the other. Shadow hugged her like a cloak. She could feel the dragons watching, waiting, judging.

“I’ve controlled the elements,” she whispered. “I’ve commanded beasts… isn’t that enough?”

Kael’s smirk was faint, but sharp. “Enough for what? They don’t obey power. They obey balance. Strength without understanding is useless. If you fail this trial, they’ll tear you apart.”

Lyra inhaled. Her heartbeat steadied. Fire, water, earth, wind, shadow — they all pulsed, ready.

A deep rumble shook the ground. From the obsidian gate emerged three massive dragons, each representing an elemental clan:

One of molten rock and flame, eyes blazing like suns

One of ice and silver, scales glittering like frost

One of wind and storm, wings shimmering like torn clouds

They circled the clearing, roaring in unison. The sky darkened as clouds spiraled above them.

The largest, the flame dragon, stepped forward. Its molten scales radiated heat that could melt stone. Lyra’s fire instinctively answered, curling around her hands, dancing, but controlled.

The dragon lowered its head, nostrils flaring. Its eyes bore into hers, and for a moment, Lyra felt… small.

“You feel fear?” Kael asked softly, standing just behind her.

Lyra swallowed. “Yes.”

“Good. That’s the first step.”

The flame dragon exhaled a torrent of fire. Instinctively, Lyra raised her palm. Not to fight, not to burn — just to match. The fire from her hand spiraled outward, intertwining with the dragon’s, forming a perfect balance of control and response.

The dragon’s roar turned into a low rumble, almost approving.

The ice dragon was next. Its breath froze the ground beneath Lyra’s feet. She lifted her water magic, letting it swirl into vapor, balancing the frost instead of resisting it. The dragon blinked, wings folding slightly, acknowledging her skill.

The wind dragon swooped down, testing her with a storm that could have knocked her off the cliff. Lyra’s shadow and wind magic intertwined, grounding her and absorbing the force. Her heart pounded, exhilarated and terrified all at once.

Kael’s voice was close now. “You’re doing more than controlling elements. You’re understanding them. That’s why they’ll obey you.”

Lyra’s eyes met his for a brief moment. The intensity between them hung like lightning in the air. She had trusted him with her hand in the arena. Now she trusted him with her life. And yet… there was a weight behind Kael’s gaze, something he hadn’t told her.

“Enough talking,” he said, stepping aside. “Now you face the final trial.”

The three dragons lowered themselves into a triangle around her. Their combined power created a vortex of fire, frost, wind, and shadow. Lyra felt it trying to overwhelm her. Every instinct screamed to fight, to dominate, to strike.

But she remembered the crown. She remembered the balance. She let go.

Her hands floated in the air, intertwining elements effortlessly. Instead of resisting, she harmonized with the vortex. The dragons roared, then paused. They circled her slowly, inspecting, testing.

Time seemed to stretch. Lyra could feel Kael’s presence beside her, steadying her, though he didn’t touch her. Every muscle in her body screamed in exhaustion. Sweat and ash clung to her skin, but she didn’t falter.

Finally, the dragons landed, forming a protective circle. The largest dragon nudged her shoulder with its massive snout. Approval. The ice dragon lowered its head, bowing. The wind dragon coiled around her, wings folding into a shield.

Lyra exhaled, relief washing over her. She had passed.

Kael’s hand brushed hers, lingering just slightly longer than necessary. “Impressive,” he murmured, his silver eyes reflecting the glow of the dragons. “You’re… something else.”

Lyra felt her cheeks heat. She looked away, focusing on the dragons. They were powerful, loyal, and alive — but now, they were hers.

Before she could celebrate, Kael’s expression darkened. His voice dropped low. “There’s something you need to know. My blood… it’s tied to the Void God. That’s why I can be near you without being consumed by your power. I didn’t tell you before, because…”

Lyra tensed. “Because?”

“Because you might not trust me if you knew,” he said softly. “I can’t hide it anymore. And soon… you’ll need every ally you can get, including me.”

Lyra stared at him, trying to process. Trust, danger, loyalty, and attraction — all twisting inside her. The dragons shifted around her, protective and obedient, sensing the tension.

A distant roar echoed through the mountains. The Void God was stirring again.

Lyra tightened her fists. “Then we prepare. Together.”

Kael nodded. “Together.”

And as the dragons spread their wings, their shadows stretching across the cliffs, Lyra realized something incredible: she was not just a Sovereign. She was a force of nature. Balanced, unstoppable, and ready to face the darkness that awaited them.

The Northern Wastes trembled beneath her feet.

The world had just met its future queen.
