The Girl Above Me
I don’t know how long it’s been.
Or how long it’s been since I’ve been rotting on this bed.
All I do is stare out of the window and sometimes eat. And when I say sometimes, I mean it more like when I know that if I don’t eat or drink, I will die. Then I eat—only that much that can make me last a few more days.
All this rotting in bed because of a bloody girl.
Yup. Just because of a girl.
How can I forget that night? I was supposed to pick up my girlfriend at 8, but I got free from my daily study around 6, so I thought, let’s surprise her.
When I drove into her driveway, I saw a familiar car standing there. I parked and decided to let myself in. And as I opened the gate, I saw my so-called girlfriend and my so-called best friend making out on the sofa, and—I went in and saw them.
As they noticed me—before I could say anything or even process what was happening—she saw me and smirked.
Then she said,
“You’re boring.
I was only around you because you could complete my assignments.
and one more thing you’re a bloody loser with no money and no future. So yeah fuck off ”.
I just blinked, took a turn, and walked out. I sat in my car and came back to my room. I just sat on the bed, and before I could process anything or even breathe, a ding sound came that took my attention.
I saw it was an email. An email from the organisation, with a big title: “Results Out.”
Without giving it a second thought, I opened it and checked my result.
And the cherry on top: I didn’t qualify for that exam.
After reading that, all I could do was take a deep breath and throw my phone at the front wall. The next thing I saw was flying glass, shattered everywhere. I let myself fall on the bed, took a deep breath, and stared at my ceiling.
I didn’t know when I fell asleep.
I came out of my deep, long sleep when a knock came on my door. An outside voice said, “Sir, dinner’s ready.”
I ignored that voice, curled up again, and slept.
The next morning, a familiar voice echoed inside the room, removing the curtain from my dark room where I had been sleeping for how long, I don’t know myself.
“Care to explain why this room is a mess and what happened to your phone?”
Before the sunlight could hit my face, I managed to cover it, and from under my breath, all I could manage to say was,
“I didn’t get in mom.”
Before I could say anything else, she said, “Take your time,” and left the room. With a click, the door closed again.
While I was thinking—something, I’m not sure what—I dozed off again.
And this cycle continued for many nights and days.
It’s been days. I’ve been rotting in bed.
A knock on the door broke the silence and dragged me back to the present.
All I could manage was to say, “Yes.”
Despite not feeling anything, I could sense an aura from the other side of the door, and I knew who that person was. With a soft click, the door opened. A cold gust of air came in, and the scent of a very familiar smell hit my nose.
Now I knew who it was without even turning toward the door to make sure. All I could do was make myself smaller and curl in even more.
“I heard you didn’t get in. If you want, I can get you in.”
And just like that—like always—he let his sentence hang in the air, waiting for my answer.
I wanted to say something, but all I could manage was, “No.”
“Okay. Then go and do it yourself.”
I knew from the way he said that he had a smirk on his face. He turned and was about to leave. I don’t know what happened, but I said something I shouldn’t have.
“Father… so, is this the time?”
He stopped at the door.
“No.”
Then he walked out.
It’s been almost ten years since I’ve been asking this question. I know something is going on. He said he would tell me everything when the time comes, but until then, I’m not allowed to say anything about my father and mother.
I know we are rich, but I don’t know how we are so rich, or how my father is so powerful. And before I could spiral down these thoughts, I snapped out of it when the door made a clicking sound.
And with that, something else also clicked in my mind.
A soft whisper came: “Wake up. It’s time.”
I was sure it sounded like that person was next to me, but I wasn’t sure if it was just my regular inner voice. Still, the voice was right. It was time.
I woke up and cleaned my room. Apart from my mother and father, no one is allowed inside, so I was the only person who would clean the glass mess I created that day.
With a foggy mind and tangled thoughts, I cleaned the room, then went to take a bath. I don’t know how many days it had been, but when I saw myself in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself.
My eyes were blood-red. They felt hollow—and hungry for something I wasn’t sure of. Maybe not maybe. No. For revenge.
And I will have my revenge on those people.
I bathed, came back, followed my routine, and then slept—only to wake up again at 5 a.m. sharp in the morning.
