Chapter 4: Surprises one after another

"Mmm," Old Man Hua nodded, "Let's eat," he continued.

Having been working in the fields since early morning, he was truly hungry.

At the words of the head of the household, Old Lady Hua quickly began to portion out the coarse bread.

Each bread was as big as an adult man's palm, and in Jin'er's eyes, it was not small. Just half of it with a bowl of thick porridge was enough to fill her up.

But farm folks exert a lot of effort, especially the men in the family. If they really opened up to eat, they wouldn't be full without four or five, which was just a normal portion.

But such open eating was not possible, after all, life had to be lived frugally.

Old Lady Hua allotted three pieces of the bread to the head of the household and her son, two to her little grandson, and she and her daughter-in-law also got two each. Jin'er's appetite was smaller, so she got one, with the rest saved for dinner.

This was because Jin'er needed to recuperate from her injuries and ate three meals a day. In normal situations, except during busy farming periods, farm families usually had only two meals a day.

But such a large piece of bread was really too much for Jin'er, so she directly divided the bread into three pieces and gave them to grandpa and daddy.

They worked the most and got hungry the fastest.

The two of them grinned from ear to ear at the bread handed over by their granddaughter (daughter), making Old Lady Hua want to roll her eyes and mutter, "So pleased with yourselves."

"Jin'er, you're such a good girl! Don't worry about them, just eat your own food and make sure to recover well, understood?" Old Lady Hua saw her obedient granddaughter and her face lit up with a kind, loving smile.

"Yes, yes, grandma Jin'er knows," she said, though her hands moved quickly, peeling the two boiled eggs that grandma handed her, then dividing one into several portions and tossing it into the bowls of her parents, grandparents, and brother, before grinning cheekily.

"Grandma, one is enough for me."

And then buried her head and began eating.

"This child," Old Lady Hua knew her granddaughter's temperament. Once given, she certainly wouldn't take it back. She said with a playful reproach and then started eating, but the smile in her eyes was too obvious.

In her heart, she felt warm and happy, knowing the whole family cared for her so much.

A quiet breakfast was finished, and then Jin'er, urged by her family, went back to her room to rest.

Soon, there was no one left at home, and the door was tightly locked. It seemed like Jin'er really didn't have much of a problem anymore, so even Mrs. Qi went to the fields. After all, the busy farming season was soon upon them, and there was still a lot of work in the fields.

Especially now, the fields couldn't be left unattended, as preventing them from birds was one thing, but more importantly, they had to guard against people with bad intentions, given the allure of soon-to-be-harvested crops to those lazy and idle was significant.

Originally, the crop yields weren't high, so if some were lost to theft, life would be even harder.

In recent days, Old Man Hua and his son were practically living in their ten acres of land, not even resting at night, but after dinner, they only had time for a brief break before returning to the fields.

Tired as they were, there was no choice for the sake of the food.

Not only them, nearly all the strong laborers in Hua Village were doing the same. On the eve of the busy farming season, almost everyone treated the fields as their home.

Fortunately, the lands of Hua Village were mostly contiguous, usually only requiring one or two family members to watch over them. For many years, apart from occasional mishaps, nothing major happened.

Seeing the door locked, Jin'er closed her room's door immediately, unable to wait for the evening. She mentally recited the mantra to return to her space house and once again appeared in her room that she had been longing for.

Then a bright smile appeared on her face again, realizing that her house had indeed come along with her, her heart finally steady. This news was simply fantastic for her.

Next, she eagerly started organizing the things in the room, especially the food supplies.

One surprise after another left Jin'er absolutely delighted.

Just the twenty-pound vacuum-sealed bags of rice and flour were over twenty bags each. This quantity would probably last her two years, not to mention, she didn't know what she was thinking back then. Thankfully, her mind was clear, and she bought all vacuum-packed goods, otherwise, there would have been waste.

Including various grains, while not as outrageously stocked as the rice and flour, they weren't in short supply either, storing up about a hundred pounds of each, including several big bags of noodles.

This was just the staple foods, not including dried chicken, duck, ham, all sorts of ready-to-eat foods, snacks, drinks, not to mention medicines, which were also indispensable.

After tidying up, though she was very tired, Jin'er's smile became even brighter.

She had enough to eat openly for at least two years, and this didn't even include the giant fridge and the refrigerator in the kitchen.

With these, Jin'er honestly wasn't anxious anymore. Her heart was much calmer; these were her ultimate backup, and even if unexpected things happened, she wouldn't fear.

Next, she began tidying up other items. Looking at the shelves filled with self-defense knives and axes, Jin'er couldn't help but be glad for her bad habits.

At one time, various doomsday theories were rampant online. Based on the principle of better safe than sorry, she had impulsively purchased a lot of self-defense weapons, especially many watermelon knives, axes, chainsaws, and even small hand-operated flour mills and rice shellers.

Thinking about it, she seemed pretty farsighted.

Then came all sorts of bedding supplies, etc. Behind the shelves, two large bags of cotton greatly astonished Jin'er with joy.

She had forgotten that she still had cotton stored, and not just cotton but seeds too. Looking at the size of the two large bags, it must be several hundred pounds, also stocked during the doomsday trend.

This was really valuable, especially in ancient times with low production, though she wasn't sure if there even was such a thing as cotton here.

After being happy for a while, Jin'er continued, finally finding a large box of seeds in a corner, making her once again uncontrollably happy. This was truly an unexpected delight.

No matter what food or living supplies, there would eventually be an end, but with these seeds, it was different. As long as there was land, there was regenerative capability.

Then onto the refrigerator: as for meat products, that needed no elaboration. What made Jin'er happy were the sweet potatoes and potatoes inside the fridge.

She didn't know if sweet potatoes and potatoes existed here, but Jin'er guessed there weren't any, judging from the family meals over more than half a month, where she hadn't encountered these two ingredients.

If that was the case, the sweet potatoes and potatoes in the fridge were extremely precious, and she didn't dare touch them easily. Otherwise, if she couldn't resist and finished eating them all, she wouldn't ever get to enjoy these two delicacies again.

The two large refrigerators were also stuffed to the brim, though there were fewer vegetables, besides the fruits, more were drinks, dairy products, and various sausages.

Jin'er enjoyed a good look and took out a cup of mixed-cereal yogurt to enjoy on the fabric sofa, closing her eyes in satisfaction with every bite, finding it utterly delicious.

The only flaw was that such dairy products didn't have a long shelf life. Although she stocked enough for two or three months, compared to other items, they weren't much at all.
