The following morning began quietly, just the way Lily preferred.
Soft sunlight filtered through the classroom windows, warming the wooden desks and filling the room with a calm glow. Students slowly arrived one by one, their voices blending into a familiar morning buzz.
Lily sat at her usual seat by the window, flipping through the pages of her notebook. Her pen moved steadily as she reviewed the notes she had written the previous day.
It helped her concentrate.
Because concentrating meant she didn’t have to think about unnecessary things.
Like Kai Mori.
Unfortunately, avoiding him had become nearly impossible.
Just as she finished writing the last line in her notebook, a shadow fell across her desk.
“You always get here early.”
Lily didn’t even need to look up.
Kai.
She kept her eyes on the page.
“And you always show up eventually.”
He pulled the chair beside her and sat down.
“Is that your way of saying good morning?”
“No.”
Kai rested his chin on his hand and watched her write.
“You study too much.”
“And you don’t study enough.”
“Maybe that’s why we’re partners.”
Lily finally stopped writing and looked at him.
“That doesn’t mean we have to talk.”
Kai smiled slightly.
“But it makes class less boring.”
Lily shook her head and returned her attention to her notebook.
For a few minutes, he remained quiet.
Which surprised her.
Then he leaned a little closer to her desk.
“What are you writing?”
“Notes.”
“I can see that.”
She sighed.
“Do you have a hobby other than bothering people?”
Kai pretended to think.
“Hmm… not really.”
Before Lily could reply, the classroom door opened and the teacher walked in.
“Good morning, class.”
Students quickly returned to their seats as the lesson began.
Today’s subject was literature, and the teacher stood at the front of the room explaining a new assignment.
“For this project,” she said, writing on the board, “you will work with your assigned partners.”
Lily already had a bad feeling about where this was going.
“You will write a short story together.”
Several students groaned.
Kai raised his hand.
“How long does the story have to be?”
“At least five pages.”
The class grew louder with complaints.
The teacher smiled slightly.
“You’ll have one week to finish it.”
Then she looked directly at Lily and Kai.
“You two will submit one story together.”
Kai glanced at Lily with amusement.
“Well, this should be fun.”
Lily felt the familiar irritation building again.
“It will be efficient if we divide the work,” she said quietly.
Kai leaned back in his chair.
“You’re already planning it?”
“Yes.”
“What if I want to write it together instead?”
Lily looked at him.
“That would take longer.”
“Maybe.”
“Then it’s a bad idea.”
Kai chuckled softly.
“Relax, Lily.”
She frowned.
“I am relaxed.”
“No, you’re not.”
The teacher continued explaining the assignment, but Lily barely heard the rest of it.
Working with Kai outside of class sounded exhausting.
When the bell rang, students immediately started discussing ideas with their partners.
Kai turned his chair toward her.
“So,” he said, “what kind of story do you want to write?”
“Any simple topic is fine.”
“That sounds boring.”
“It’s practical.”
Kai tapped his fingers lightly on the desk.
“What about a romance story?”
Lily blinked.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I’m not interested in writing romance.”
Kai smiled mischievously.
“Is it because you’ve never been in love?”
Lily glared at him.
“That’s none of your business.”
He raised his hands in surrender again.
“Alright, alright.”
Students around them were already talking excitedly with their partners, sharing ideas and laughing.
Kai glanced around the room before looking back at Lily.
“Let’s work on it after school.”
She shook her head immediately.
“I have other things to do.”
“Like what?”
“Studying.”
“You can study later.”
Lily crossed her arms.
“Why are you so determined?”
Kai thought for a moment.
Then he smiled slightly.
“Because you never smile.”
She looked confused.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
Kai shrugged.
“I’m curious.”
“About what?”
“What it looks like when you do.”
Lily stared at him.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Maybe.”
He stood up and slung his bag over his shoulder.
“But I still want to see it.”
Before she could reply, Mina approached their desks again.
“Hey Kai,” she said. “We’re going to the café after school.”
Kai glanced at her.
“Today?”
“Yes,” Mina replied brightly. “You should come.”
Kai hesitated briefly.
Lily pretended not to care and started packing her books.
Then Kai spoke.
“Maybe another time.”
Mina looked surprised.
“Why?”
“I have something to finish.”
He gestured toward Lily.
“Our project.”
The silence that followed was noticeable.
Mina’s eyes moved toward Lily slowly.
“Oh.”
Her voice remained polite, but there was a faint tension in her smile now.
“Well… good luck with that.”
She walked away soon after.
Lily finished packing her bag and stood up.
“You didn’t have to decline because of me,” she said quietly.
Kai shrugged.
“I didn’t mind.”
“You should go if you want to.”
“I don’t.”
Lily looked at him suspiciously.
“Why?”
Kai smiled slightly.
“Because I’m curious.”
She sighed again.
“About my smile?”
“Exactly.”
Lily shook her head.
“You’re wasting your time.”
Kai walked toward the classroom door.
“We’ll see.”
As he reached the hallway, he looked back at her one more time.
“You’re meeting me after school, partner.”
Lily opened her mouth to refuse.
But he was already gone.
She stood there for a moment, staring at the empty doorway.
Then she muttered under her breath.
“This boy is impossible.”
Yet despite her frustration…
There was a small, unfamiliar warmth lingering in her chest.
And that only made things more complicated.
