Loving the Enemy
...------------*would post 5 new chapters tomorrow*----------------...
The next morning, Lily arrived at school earlier than usual.
The sky was still pale with the soft colors of early morning, and the hallways were quiet except for the faint sound of a few students talking in the distance. Lily liked arriving early. It gave her time to think and prepare before the day became noisy.
She walked into the classroom and took her usual seat by the window.
For a moment, everything felt peaceful.
She opened her notebook and began reviewing the outline she had written for the story project. The idea was simple: two students who disliked each other forced to work together on something important.
It was straightforward.
Efficient.
And definitely not based on real life.
Lily tapped her pen lightly against the desk while thinking about the next part of the story.
Just then, the classroom door opened.
She didn’t look up at first.
But when a familiar voice spoke, she knew exactly who it was.
“You’re here even earlier today.”
Kai.
Lily slowly lifted her eyes.
Kai Mori walked into the room with his usual relaxed expression, his school bag hanging over one shoulder. His hair was slightly messy, as if he had rushed out of the house without bothering to fix it.
“Don’t you ever get tired of showing up where I am?” Lily asked.
Kai dropped into the chair beside her.
“Nope.”
She sighed quietly.
“I was enjoying the silence.”
“You still have it,” he said. “I’m not that loud.”
Lily raised an eyebrow.
“That’s debatable.”
Kai leaned over slightly and looked at her notebook.
“Working on the project already?”
“Yes.”
“You’re very serious about this.”
“I already told you why.”
Kai nodded.
“Right. Because you don’t like failing.”
For a moment, they sat quietly.
Then Kai suddenly said, “You know something?”
Lily didn’t respond.
“You’re actually pretty interesting.”
She looked at him.
“That’s the first time anyone has described me that way.”
Kai smiled faintly.
“Most people are boring.”
Before Lily could answer, the classroom door opened again.
Several students entered at once, chatting loudly as they found their seats. Among them was Mina.
The moment she stepped into the room, her eyes immediately searched the classroom.
They stopped when she saw Kai sitting beside Lily.
For a brief second, her smile faded.
Then she walked over.
“Good morning,” Mina said sweetly.
Kai waved casually.
“Morning.”
Mina glanced at Lily’s notebook.
“Working on the project already?”
“Yes,” Lily replied calmly.
Mina nodded slowly.
“You two seem very… focused.”
Kai chuckled.
“She’s the focused one.”
Mina’s eyes moved between them.
“Well,” she said lightly, “Kai used to sit with us during breaks.”
Lily closed her notebook.
“That doesn’t concern me.”
Kai looked slightly amused.
Mina forced a small laugh.
“I guess not.”
But the tension in the air was noticeable.
Just then, the teacher walked into the classroom and everyone returned to their seats.
The lesson began.
Throughout the class, Lily tried to focus on the lecture. But every once in a while, she noticed something strange.
Students were whispering.
Some glanced toward her and Kai before quickly looking away.
It wasn’t subtle.
By the time the bell rang for break, the whispers had grown louder.
Lily packed her books slowly.
Kai noticed.
“You look annoyed.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
She glanced around the classroom.
“People are talking.”
Kai shrugged.
“They always do.”
“Yes, but now they’re talking about us.”
Kai leaned back in his chair.
“That’s because we’re partners.”
“That’s not the only reason.”
Kai tilted his head.
“What else?”
Lily hesitated.
Before she could answer, two girls walked past their desks.
“…I heard they walked home together yesterday…”
“…Really? I thought Mina liked him…”
“…Maybe Lily is stealing him…”
Lily froze.
Kai heard it too.
The girls quickly hurried away when they realized Lily was staring at them.
Silence settled between Lily and Kai.
Finally, Lily spoke.
“This is exactly why I avoid people.”
Kai scratched the back of his head.
“Rumors spread fast here.”
“I noticed.”
Kai looked at her carefully.
“You shouldn’t let it bother you.”
“It doesn’t.”
But her voice sounded slightly colder than usual.
Kai sighed.
“People will forget soon.”
“I hope so.”
Lily stood up.
“I’m going to the library.”
Kai grabbed his bag.
“I’ll come.”
She frowned.
“Why?”
“We have a project to finish.”
Lily hesitated for a moment.
Then she nodded slightly.
“Fine.”
They walked through the hallway together.
More whispers followed them.
Lily kept her eyes forward, pretending not to hear anything.
When they reached the library, the quiet atmosphere immediately felt comforting.
They found a table near the window and sat down.
Lily opened her notebook again.
Kai rested his elbows on the table.
“Still annoyed?” he asked.
“No.”
“You look annoyed.”
“I look like this all the time.”
Kai laughed softly.
“That’s true.”
Lily began writing the first paragraph of their story.
For several minutes, neither of them spoke.
Then Kai leaned closer to read what she had written.
“You’re a good writer,” he said.
Lily paused.
“That’s the second compliment you’ve given me.”
“Am I not allowed to?”
“You usually just annoy me.”
Kai smiled.
“Well, maybe I’m improving.”
Lily looked at him briefly.
For once, he seemed completely sincere.
She quickly returned her attention to the notebook.
But deep inside, something felt different.
The rumors in the hallway still bothered her.
Not because people were talking.
But because part of her wondered why Kai had chosen to stay beside her instead of sitting with everyone else.
And that question refused to leave her mind.
