The dining room became very quiet after Maya arrived. Everyone could feel the tension in the air.
Maya walked slowly toward the dining table like she owned the place. She smiled confidently and sat down without waiting for anyone to invite her.
“Why is everyone so quiet?” Maya said with a small laugh. “Did I interrupt something?”
Adrian’s father looked a little angry.
“Maya, this is a family dinner.”
Maya crossed her legs and smiled.
“I know. I came because I heard Adrian got married. I wanted to see his wife.”
Her eyes slowly moved to Lina. She looked Lina up and down again, judging her clothes, her hair, everything.
“You look very… simple,” Maya said.
Lina felt a little embarrassed, but she didn’t want to look weak.
“I prefer comfortable clothes,” Lina replied politely.
Maya smiled, but her eyes were cold.
“Do you know who Adrian was supposed to marry?”
Lina stayed quiet.
“Maya, that’s enough,” Adrian said coldly.
But Maya ignored him and continued talking.
“Adrian and I dated for three years,” Maya said. “Everyone thought we would get married.”
Lina felt uncomfortable hearing that, but she tried not to show it.
“Really?” Lina said calmly. “But he married me.”
Adrian looked at Lina, surprised by her confidence.
Maya’s smile disappeared for a second, but then she laughed.
“This marriage won’t last long.”
Lina then did something that surprised everyone. She gently held Adrian’s arm and leaned slightly toward him.
“That’s okay,” Lina said. “Even if it’s short, I’m still his wife now.”
Adrian looked down at Lina’s hand holding his arm. He didn’t move his arm away.
Instead, he said,
“Yes. Lina is my wife. Please respect her.”
Maya’s face became a little angry, but she quickly smiled again.
“Of course,” she said. “I was just joking.”
But Lina could feel that Maya was not joking at all.
After dinner, Lina went to the garden to get some fresh air. The mansion was beautiful at night, with lights in the garden and the sound of the fountain.
She took a deep breath.
“That woman is scary…” Lina whispered to herself.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her.
It was Adrian.
“You did well today,” he said.
Lina looked at him.
“I was very nervous.”
“I could see that,” he said. “But you answered Maya very well.”
Lina smiled a little.
“I didn’t want her to think I’m weak.”
Adrian looked at her for a few seconds and then said quietly,
“Maya and I broke up two years ago.”
Lina was surprised.
“You don’t have to explain to me. This is just a contract marriage, remember?”
Adrian looked at her, but didn’t say anything for a moment.
“Yes… a contract marriage,” he repeated.
There was a short silence between them.
Then Adrian said,
“Tomorrow there is a company party. You will come with me.”
“Me?!” Lina asked, shocked.
“Yes. Everyone needs to see my wife,” Adrian said.
“But I don’t have any fancy dresses…” Lina said.
Adrian took out his phone and made a call.
“Prepare a dress for Lina for tomorrow night,” he said and ended the call.
Lina blinked.
“Prepare a dress…? Just like that?”
“Yes,” Adrian replied calmly.
Lina shook her head.
“Rich people are really different…”
Adrian almost smiled again.
Later that night, when they returned home, Lina was very tired. She lay down on her bed and looked at the ceiling.
“So many things happened in just two days…” she said to herself.
She closed her eyes and remembered how Adrian supported her at dinner, how he told Maya to respect her, and how he said she did well.
“He’s cold… but maybe not a bad person…” she whispered.
At the same time, Adrian was in his room, standing near the window and looking at the night sky.
He remembered how Lina held his arm and confidently told Maya, “I’m still his wife now.”
For some reason, he smiled a little.
“This girl… is interesting,” he said quietly.
