⚡ ILLUSION
Part 4: The Shift
Written by Kingson Das
“What do you want from me?”
⸻
Ethan’s voice came out low.
Not loud.
Not angry.
But steady.
Nyx didn’t answer immediately.
She just stood there, watching him.
Closely.
Carefully.
Like she was seeing something new.
The room was quiet.
Too quiet.
Even the air felt like it was waiting.
Ethan exhaled slowly, trying to control his breathing.
“You’ve chased me… trapped me… killed me twice,” he said.
A pause.
“So I’ll ask again…”
His eyes met hers.
“What do you want from me?”
Nyx’s gaze didn’t waver.
But something in it… shifted.
Barely.
Almost unnoticeable.
“The Aion,” she said finally.
Ethan shook his head slightly.
“No.”
That surprised her.
Not the answer—
The tone.
“You don’t just want the Aion,” he continued.
“If you did… I’d already be dead.”
Silence.
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
“You think you understand me?”
“No,” Ethan said.
A pause.
“But I think you don’t understand yourself.”
That—
Hit something.
For the first time…
Nyx didn’t respond immediately.
Ethan noticed.
And stepped closer.
Not running.
Not afraid.
Just… curious.
“You had chances,” he said quietly.
“You could’ve ended me.”
A step closer.
“But you didn’t.”
Nyx’s fingers twitched slightly.
A reaction.
Small.
But real.
“Careful,” she said, her voice low.
“You’re stepping into something you don’t understand.”
“Then explain it,” he said.
Their distance shrank.
Too close.
But this time—
Ethan didn’t move away.
Nyx stared at him.
Longer than before.
Deeper than before.
And then—
She looked away.
Just for a second.
But Ethan saw it.
And that changed everything.
“You hesitate,” he said.
Her eyes snapped back to his.
Sharp.
Dangerous.
“Say that again,” she warned.
“You hesitate,” he repeated.
The air shifted instantly.
Heat.
Pressure.
Power.
Flames flickered faintly around the edges of the room.
Nyx stepped forward—
Fast—
Grabbing his collar again—
Pulling him close.
“You think this is hesitation?” she whispered.
Ethan’s heart pounded.
But he didn’t look away.
“No,” he said.
A pause.
“I think it’s something else.”
Silence.
Dangerous silence.
“What?” she asked.
Ethan swallowed.
Then said it.
“You’re starting to care.”
The world stopped.
Completely.
Nyx froze.
For a second—
Just a second—
Her grip loosened.
Then—
She pushed him away.
Hard.
Ethan stumbled back but stayed on his feet.
“That’s ridiculous,” she said sharply.
But her voice—
Wasn’t fully stable.
Ethan noticed.
And that gave him confidence.
“Is it?” he asked quietly.
Nyx turned away.
But not to leave.
Just to avoid his eyes.
That was new.
Very new.
“I am a demon,” she said.
Cold.
Controlled.
“I don’t care. I don’t hesitate. I don’t feel.”
Ethan let out a small breath.
“Then why am I still alive?”
No answer.
“Why didn’t you let me die?”
Silence.
“Why do you keep watching me like that?”
Still nothing.
Ethan stepped closer again.
“You said I belong to you.”
A pause.
“Then why does it feel like…”
He stopped.
Nyx turned slightly.
“Like what?” she asked.
Ethan met her gaze.
“Like you don’t want to lose me.”
That—
Hit deeper than anything else.
Nyx’s eyes flickered.
For a moment—
The red glow faded.
Just for a second.
And in that second—
She looked human again.
Then it came back.
Stronger.
“Don’t misunderstand this,” she said.
Her voice darker now.
More controlled.
“You are nothing more than a vessel.”
Ethan didn’t react.
He just smiled slightly.
“You’re lying.”
That snapped something.
In an instant—
She was in front of him again.
Her hand against the wall—
Trapping him.
“You’re testing me,” she said.
“Maybe,” Ethan replied.
Their faces were inches apart now.
Too close.
The tension—
Was different this time.
Not just fear.
Something else.
Unspoken.
Dangerous.
Nyx stared into his eyes.
Searching.
For fear.
For weakness.
For something she could control.
But what she found—
Was something else entirely.
And that—
Unsettled her.
Her hand slowly lowered.
Not because she had to.
Because she chose to.
That was new.
“You’re changing,” she said quietly.
Ethan frowned slightly.
“No,” he replied.
A pause.
“I think you are.”
Silence again.
Heavy.
Real.
Nyx stepped back.
Creating distance.
Not forced.
Intentional.
“I should kill you,” she said.
But there was no movement.
No attack.
Nothing.
Ethan noticed.
And this time—
He didn’t run.
“Then do it,” he said.
She didn’t.
Seconds passed.
Then—
She turned away.
“You’re becoming a problem,” she murmured.
Ethan let out a quiet breath.
“And you’re not solving it,” he replied.
That made her pause.
Again.
For the first time—
Ethan saw it clearly.
Nyx—
The demon—
Wasn’t in complete control anymore.
And she knew it.
Her voice softened slightly.
“Stay alive,” she said.
Ethan blinked.
“What?”
She didn’t look at him.
“Don’t die without my permission.”
It sounded like an order.
But something about it—
Felt different.
Almost like…
Concern.
Nyx walked toward the shadows.
Before disappearing—
She stopped.
Just for a second.
“You’re not what I expected,” she said quietly.
Ethan didn’t respond.
Because he didn’t know what that meant.
And maybe—
She didn’t either.
Then—
She was gone.
Ethan stood alone again.
But this time—
The silence felt different.
Not empty.
Not terrifying.
Just…
Heavy.
Because now—
Things had changed.
Not the world.
Not the danger.
But something else.
Something between them.
Small.
Fragile.
But real.
And once something like that begins—
It doesn’t stop.
It grows.
Even in the darkest places.
Even between a human…
and a demon.
To be continued… 🔥
