Shadow of Hawkinville

Shadow of Hawkinville

Chapter 1 – The Disappearance

The night was unusually quiet in the small town of Hawkinville. Streetlights flickered as the wind whispered through the empty streets. Aleeha sat by her window, staring at the shadows dancing across her room. Something felt… wrong.

Earlier that day, a boy from her school, Arman, had vanished without a trace. No one saw him leave. No one heard him scream. Just… gone. His bicycle lay abandoned near the edge of the forest, tires still spinning from where he last rode.

Aleeha’s phone buzzed. It was Zayan.

"Are you seeing this?" his message read.

Aleeha typed back quickly: "Seeing what? The news? Everyone’s talking about Arman."

"No… not the news. Something else. Check outside your window."

She hesitated, heart pounding. Slowly, she peered through the blinds. Across the street, shadows moved oddly. Not like normal shadows… these were thicker, darker, and they seemed to slither.

Suddenly, a low hum filled the air, vibrating through the walls. A chill ran down her spine. She stepped back, but curiosity tugged at her. Grabbing her flashlight, she snuck out of her house and toward the forest’s edge.

Maya and Raheel were already there, their faces pale under the dim moonlight.

"You guys saw it too?" Maya whispered.

Raheel nodded, fumbling with his tech gadget. "It’s like… a portal. I can’t explain, but it’s sending out some kind of signal. And Arman… he’s close to it."

Aleeha’s breath caught. "We have to find him… before it’s too late."

And as the three friends stepped closer to the edge of the forest, the shadows seemed to reach for them… whispering secrets that no one was meant to hear.

Suddenly, a branch snapped behind them. They spun around—but the forest was empty. Or so they thought.

Somewhere, deep inside the dark, something was watching.

The next morning, the town of Hawkinville seemed normal, almost too normal. Birds chirped, shopkeepers opened their stores, and children played in the streets—but Aleeha couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

She met Zayan, Maya, and Raheel near the edge of the forest again. Raheel’s hands shook slightly as he held a small device he had been working on all night.

"I’ve been tracking the signal," he said, voice trembling. "It’s not from this world… it’s coming from… somewhere else."

Maya frowned. "Somewhere else? Like… underground? Or… another dimension?"

Raheel’s eyes widened. "Exactly. And the signal spikes every time someone disappears."

Aleeha shivered. The thought of Arman being trapped somewhere unimaginable made her stomach twist.

"So what do we do?" she asked.

Zayan, who had been quiet, finally spoke. "We follow it. Carefully. Whatever is causing this… we have to find it before anyone else vanishes."

The group moved cautiously through the forest, Raheel’s device beeping louder and louder with each step. Shadows seemed to cling to the trees, moving in ways that didn’t make sense.

Suddenly, a faint whisper echoed through the air: "Come closer…"

They froze. The voice sounded familiar, almost like a memory they couldn’t place.

A strange fog began to form around them, swirling like it had a mind of its own. The signal on Raheel’s device was now off the charts.

"This is it," he whispered, gripping the device tightly. "The source… it’s close."

From within the fog, a dark shape started to emerge. Its edges wavered, like smoke and shadow combined. A hiss cut through the air, sharp and chilling.

"Run?" Maya asked, her voice barely audible.

"No," Aleeha said firmly, stepping forward. "We need to know what’s happening. We can’t just run."

The shadow pulsed, almost alive, as if testing them. And in that moment, each of them realized—nothing in their town, nothing in their lives, would ever be the same again.
