The Day She Said Goodnight

Like what we always do, me and my girlfriend celebrate our anniversary in the church where we plan to be married at. It's already our fifth anniversary of course still counting.

I remember the time when I first meet her. She was the sweetest girl I ever meet. She have this cute smile, innocent eyes, and beautiful face. She was standing right at the sakura tree while the flowers are blooming. My heart beats fast that day, and I'm sure. I'm already fallen.

"Happy fifth anniversary my love!" she greeted with joy and excitement. I smile at her. This is like a dream.

She's my dream girl. I never thought she would fall for me too. I never imagine that we will end up together like this. I always looking at her afar. Thinking how hard to reach the girl like her.

"Happy anniversary, love." I said before kissing her softly. After we greet each other. We pray and wish in God. I wish I could grow old with her.

"I love you," she whisper at me. I hug her and kiss her forehead.

"I love you too"

Days passes nothing change at us. We still have time together even though we become busier each day because of our work. She's an engineer while I'm working at the company.

I sigh when I saw her still doing her job at 3 o'clock not having a sleep. I enter our study room and sitted next to her and hug her tight.

"Love, let's sleep. You're not having enough sleep this days. I don't what you to be sick." I said and put my chin on her shoulder while looking what she is doing.

"I'll just finish this." she said, tiredly. I waited for her. I hug her tight and kiss her neck. I don't want to sleep alone.

"Love, you look tired." I welcome her with a hug while she enter our apartment. She hug me too and took off her hard hat and put the blueprint on the table.

"I cook, let's eat."

"Later, I have still work to do" she said and smile at me. She kiss my cheek and enter the study room. I sigh before heading at the kitchen.

She's not taking care of his body now because of too much work.

I woke up early because I need to go at work. I was about to enter the bathroom when I notice that the food I prepare for her is still there not touch at all. I look at the study room, the lights are still on. She didn't sleep?

"Love?" I open the door of the study room.

"Oh. You're not still asleep. I'm done let's sleep." she said and smile at me. I sigh. I smile at her sadly before hugging her.

Instead of saying that it's already morning. I answered,

"Yes, let's sleep now." I kiss her forehead. The two of us lay down while hugging each other. I caressed her hair while staring at the wall.

"Love?" she didn't answer.

"Take a rest." I whisper before kissing her.

"Let's have a date!" she excitedly said.

"Okay!"

We spend our time at the park. Play, eat and have fun not thinking of our tiresome works. We spend our time like little children.

"Oh! The ice cream is melting." I lick her hand with ice cream.

We are now sitting at the bench. I'm sleeping at her lap while she is playing at my hair.

"I love you," I said.

She smile at me.

"I love you so much. I can't wait to marry you! And have kids!" she said and laugh. I chuckle. I can't wait too my love.

We are too happy. Yet, this day come.

"The patient have stage 4 cancer" my heart broke after hearing what the doctor said. I close my eyes and shook my head. No, this is not real. This maybe a mistake.

"D-doc.. Have another test again." I said, trembling. The doctor shook his head like disappointment and sadly look at me.

No. No. No. I step backwards making me stumble and fall. I didn't feel the pain at all. I can't take this. I can't lose her. Tear already fall from my eyes.

" Love," she cried and hug me.

"Love, don't cry. Please. We will fight" she said. I hug her tight. Please fight for me love. Please don't leave me. I love you. I can't lose you.

"Hmmm. My hair is falling." I stop fixing the food and look at her. She's combing her hair. I walk towards her and sitted at her bed.

"Eh? You still beautiful with out a wig." I said and giggle. She pouted.

"I have an idea. Let's have a haircut!" she said.

We cutted are hair until there's few hair left. I cutted her hair and he cutted mine. We have fun just doing that. We have like kids and not thinking about her illness.

Days pass. Her illness is getting worse. She become weaker and weaker. Day by day I become scared. She's fighting I know. But I don't want her to suffer. It's hard for me to watch her cry because of the treatment, I can't watch her hurting, I can't.

"The stars are beautiful" she said weakly. She's hugging me while sitting at the wheelchair. I stop the tears falling from my eyes and nodded at her.

"L-love.. I-I'm ti—"

"I can't wait to marry you." I kneel at her. I cup her face and smile at her. I know, love. I know you are tired. I'm not ready to let go of you yet. Please, just give me more time.

"Love.." water is already forming in her eyes. I smile at her. Kiss her forehead. Don't go yet.

"Look how many building I build!" she said proudly while hugging me. I chuckle. I nodded.

"You're building our house right?" I asked.

"Of course! I'm building our big house." she said. I smile while nodding. The atmosphere is so sad. She's crying while I'm stopping my tears to fall.

"I will build the house of our kids to.. And.." she stop because her voice cracked. I hug her tight and and bite my lips stopping the tears but I failed. Tears are now falling from eyes like waterfalls.

"And.. I will building the house of our grandchildren." she breath deeply.

"Love" she cried and buried her face in my chest crying so loud. I cried too while hugging her.

"I.. Love you. I love you. I want to grow old with you. I'm scared. Love I'm scared." she cried.

"I.. Know.. I know.. I love you too." my voice cracked.

"I'm tired love. I'm tired." she said. It hurt me a lot. Hearing that she's tired. My heart is aching so much I can't breath.

"Let's have rest then my love." I said and smile at her. I cup her face. I kiss her and kiss his forehead.

"Hmm.. Let's rest.." I said and smile. Don't cry! Don't cry. She smile at me sadly and nodded.

She lean on my chest.

"I love you." she whisper.

"I love you too."

"G-goodnight"

Her hand slowly fall from my chest. I close my eyes and cry silently. I play with hair. I can't take this. I hug her tight and cried so loud.

"Goodnight love. Take a rest. You did a good fight.." I whisper.

"That's my latest memories with her" I said as I look at the young girl hearing my story. She stared at me without saying any words. She blink twice. Her lips parted.

I smile at her and slightly tap her head. I got shock when she suddenly hug me so tight. I feel her shoulder move, means she's crying. I smile.

"She's the one who thought me to fight" I said while remembering how my love fight for me. How she smile after of her hurtful treatment.

"That was so sad Doc. How can you still smile?" she asked. I look and smile.

"Because she's still with me." I said. She lifted her head and look at me confusedly.

"Huh?"

"She's here" I pointed my heart. "She's here always." I said and smile. Her eyes twinkled amazed of what I just said.

"I can't believe you Doc." she said. I chuckle and patted her head.

"Eat your medicine okay? Follow what I'm saying! I'm your doctor." I said with authority. She pouted.

"Yes. Doc! I will be brave like you!" she said that makes me smile.

I walk outside the room. The smile I'm wearing a while ago fade and tears fall from my eyes. It's been years when she's gone. I can still remember how she said good night.

I cover my face with my hands as I cry.
