Chapter Four: The One Who Broke In
The alarm didn’t ring.
It shifted.
Subtle. Controlled. Silent to everyone else—
But not to her.
Cassandra’s eyes lifted from her screen the moment the system flickered.
Not a breach.
Not exactly.
More like… someone knocking on the door—
And then picking the lock anyway.
Her fingers moved across the keyboard instantly, pulling up internal security layers.
Camera feeds. Movement logs. Access overrides.
Then she saw it.
A single path—clean, precise, almost elegant—
Cutting through INFERNEX SYSTEMS as it belonged there.
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
" Again.”
Before she could move—
Carl’s voice came from behind, low and controlled.
“He’s here.”
Cassandra didn’t need to ask who.
A small breath escaped her.
Half annoyance.
Half disbelief.
“Where?”
“Meeting room,” Carl replied. “With Nick. Mathew’s there.”
A pause.
Then—
“He fought his way in.”
Of course he did.
Cassandra stood up smoothly, already moving.
“Damn it…”
But there was no real anger in her voice.
Just something heavier.
Something more personal.
The hallway seemed quieter than usual as she walked.
Faster this time.
Sharper.
Employees stepped aside instantly, sensing the shift in her energy.
Carl followed on her right.
Nick had already secured the area.
Mathew was inside.
And him—
waiting.
The meeting room doors opened.
And there he was.
David.
Standing in the center.
Breathing slightly heavier.
A few bruises along his arms.
A small cut near his cheek.
But still standing straight.
Still defiant.
Tall. Athletic. Blue eyes that didn’t belong to someone who had seen what he’d seen.
Eyes that—
the moment they met hers—
softened.
Completely.
All the fight in him disappeared in a second.
“Cassandra…”
His voice broke slightly.
Like he had been holding it together—
just for her.
For a moment—
No one spoke.
Mathew stood near the table, arms crossed, calm as ever.
Nick leaned against the wall, watching.
Carl remained still—but alert.
But none of them moved.
Because this—
wasn’t their moment.
Cassandra walked toward him slowly.
Step by step.
Until she was right in front of him.
Close enough to see the small tremble in his hands.
Close enough to see—
He was trying not to cry.
And just like that—
Her expression changed.
Not soft.
Not weak.
But human.
She reached out—
and pulled him into a hug.
Firm. Protective. Real.
“It’s okay,” she said quietly.
“I’m here.”
That was all it took.
David’s hands gripped her slightly, like he needed to make sure she was real.
Not a memory.
Not a voice through a screen.
Real.
Minutes passed.
Silence filled the room—
But it wasn’t tense anymore.
It was… calm.
When she finally pulled back, her eyes scanned him quickly.
Injuries.
Nothing serious.
But still—
unnecessary.
She looked at him directly.
“You escaped again.”
David looked away for a second.
“…Yes.”
Her gaze sharpened.
“You know how dangerous that is.”
No response.
“Breaking through security. Fighting guards.”
A step closer.
“You could have been seriously hurt.”
Still—
nothing.
Just silence.
Then—
quietly—
“You didn’t visit me.”
That stopped her.
For a second—
just a second—
She didn’t respond.
David’s voice dropped.
“You didn’t come for a month.”
Not accusing.
Just… honest.
“I waited.”
Something inside her tightened.
But she didn’t show it.
“There are calls,” she said calmly. “Messages. Video—”
“I don’t want that.”
He looked at her again.
Directly this time.
“I want to see you.”
Simple.
Clear.
Real.
Cassandra exhaled slowly.
Then—
without warning—
She pinched his ear.
Hard.
“Ah—! Cassandra—!”
“I told you,” she said firmly, “not to do reckless things like this.”
“Ow—okay! Okay! I won’t—!”
She released him.
Still serious.
“Call me first.”
A pause.
“Or video call me.”
Another pause.
“Before you decide to break into my building like it’s a game.”
David rubbed his ear, frowning slightly.
“…Okay.”
Then softer—
“You promise you’ll visit?”
Cassandra looked at him for a moment.
Then nodded once.
“Every month.”
That was enough.
For him—
That was everything.
She walked to the side table, grabbing a medical kit.
“Sit.”
David obeyed instantly.
She cleaned the cut on his cheek carefully.
Applied medicine.
Wrapped his arm.
Her movements precise—but gentle.
“You’re smart,” she said quietly.
“Strong.”
A glance at him.
“The only one who can break through my system like that.”
A small pause.
“But don’t use it to hurt yourself.”
David didn’t respond right away.
Then—
serious now—
“Cassandra.”
She didn’t look up.
“What?”
“You know I like you… right?”
Her hand paused slightly.
“…Focus on your training.”
“I’m serious.”
Now she looked at him.
His eyes weren’t joking.
Not teasing.
Real.
“I’ve liked you for a long time.”
A beat.
“Can I court you?”
Cassandra had just taken a sip of water.
And immediately—
She choked.
“—What the—!”
She coughed—
and accidentally sprayed water straight onto his face.
Silence.
Then—
Nick turned away.
Carl covered his mouth.
Mathew looked down—
shoulders shaking slightly.
“…Did that just happen?” Nick muttered.
Cassandra wiped her mouth, staring at David.
“What the hell was that?!”
David blinked.
Wet.
Confused.
Still serious.
“You didn’t answer.”
Behind them—
a quiet snort.
Then—
laughter.
Low at first.
Then louder.
Carl shook his head. “Damn, Cassandra… you’re always careless.”
Nick added, “First time I’ve seen someone survive that question.”
Mathew finally let out a small laugh. “Impressive.”
Cassandra glared at them.
“You three—stop.”
But it was too late.
The tension had broken.
Completely.
David wiped his face slowly.
Then—
He laughed too.
And just like that—
The room changed.
No hierarchy.
No fear.
No distance.
Just them.
Calling each other by name.
Laughing.
Breathing.
Alive.
Cassandra shook her head slightly—
then laughed as well.
Quiet.
But real.
“Idiot,” she muttered under her breath.
But there was no anger in it.
Only something warmer.
Something dangerous.
Because moments like this—
rare.
Uncontrolled.
Unplanned—
were the only cracks in her world.
And the people inside this room—
were the only ones allowed to see them.
Far above the city—
inside the strongest building in the system—
The queen laughed.
And for a moment—
She wasn’t untouchable.
She was just—
Cassandra.
