Months passed quickly, and before everyone knew it, the school year was finally coming to an end. All the major exams were done, grades were finalized, and the whole campus was buzzing with excitement for the most awaited event of the year—the JS Promenade.
It was known as the highlight of high school life, the night where students would dress up elegantly, dance, and celebrate their youth before moving up to senior year. For many, it was also the perfect chance to confess feelings or share special moments with someone they liked.
“Have you thought about who you’re going with?” Jessica asked while they were browsing through dress magazines.
Thea smiled softly. “We’re going together as a group, right? That’s more fun anyway.”
“Definitely,” Fiona agreed. “But I heard a lot of girls are already planning to ask Medalle to be their date. He’s probably going to be the most in-demand guy tonight.”
Velle’s hand stopped turning the page. She looked down, hiding the sadness in her eyes. Of course, everyone would want to be with him. He was handsome, kind, and perfect in every way. Why would he choose someone as ordinary as her?
“Velle?” Jessica called gently. “Are you going to tell him? Or at least ask him to dance?”
Velle shook her head immediately. “No. I’m fine just being there and having fun with all of you. Besides, he probably already has someone in mind. I don’t want to make things awkward. It’s better if I just stay as his friend.”
Deep inside, though, she wished. She wished that for just one night, she could be the girl standing beside him. But she knew her place, so she decided to just enjoy the night from where she always was—watching from a distance.
On the night of the prom, the venue was transformed into a magical place filled with lights, flowers, and beautiful music. Everyone looked stunning in their formal attire. When Velle arrived wearing her simple yet elegant blue gown, her friends complimented her non-stop.
“You look so beautiful, Velle! Medalle won’t be able to take his eyes off you tonight!” Thea said happily.
And true enough, when Medalle walked in wearing a neat black suit, looking even more handsome than usual, his gaze immediately landed on her. He walked straight towards their group and smiled warmly.
“You all look amazing,” he said, before looking directly at Velle. “Especially you, Velle. You look really pretty tonight.”
Those simple words made her heart race like crazy. “T-Thank you, Medalle. You look great too.”
The night went on with programs, games, and dinner. Then came the part everyone was waiting for—the slow dance. Romantic music filled the air as couples and partners filled the dance floor. Velle sat at their table, watching everyone with a soft smile. She saw Medalle being asked by different girls one after another, and he politely danced with each of them.
“This is how it should be,” she thought to herself. “He deserves someone brave and confident.”
But suddenly, a shadow appeared in front of her. She looked up and saw Medalle standing there, extending his hand towards her.
“May I have this dance, Velle?” he asked gently.
Her eyes widened in surprise. “M-Me? Are you sure?”
“Of course,” he chuckled. “Come on.”
With trembling hands, she took his hand. As they stepped onto the dance floor, everything around her blurred just like it always did. There was only him. The feeling of his hand holding hers, the warmth of his presence, and the way he looked at her made her feel like she was floating.
They swayed slowly to the music, not needing many words to understand each other. In that moment, Velle felt like the luckiest girl in the world. This was the memory she would cherish forever—the night she danced with the boy she loved.
