Days passed since that afternoon when Simon first saw Siren in a different light. It was strange for him, really. He was a man who was used to controlling everything around him—his business, his people, his enemies, and even his own emotions. But now, he found himself unable to control where his thoughts wandered. Almost every hour, he would find himself thinking about her.
He started learning more about her without her knowing. He asked the head maid about her performance, her behavior, and how she treated others.
“Sir, Siren is one of our best workers,” the head maid reported respectfully. “She is always on time, she does her tasks perfectly, and she never causes trouble. Even when other maids make mistakes or blame her for things she did not do, she just stays quiet and accepts it. She is very kind and patient, Sir. Sometimes I wonder how she manages to stay that way despite everything she has gone through.”
Simon listened carefully to every word. Every new thing he learned about her made his interest grow deeper. He admired her strength, her kindness, and her heart. She had every reason to be bitter, angry, or hateful toward the world, but she chose to be good instead. That was something very rare and precious.
Meanwhile, Siren continued with her daily routine, completely unaware that the man she feared and respected was already watching her every move. To her, nothing had changed. She still walked with her head down, she still spoke only when spoken to, and she still kept her distance from everyone, especially from Simon.
One morning, Siren was tasked to clean the library located on the second floor of the mansion. It was a quiet place, filled with thousands of books and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. She loved being here because it was peaceful and calm. She would often finish her work early and spend the remaining time looking at the books, wishing she had the chance to read and learn more.
That day, she was arranging the books on the highest shelf. She stood on a small wooden stool, reaching up carefully to put the heavy books in their proper places. She was so focused on her work that she did not hear the footsteps approaching the room.
Simon had decided to go to the library to look for some documents he needed. He entered the room quietly, and his eyes immediately found her. She was standing high up, her body stretched out as she tried to reach the last book. Before he could even say anything, Siren lost her balance.
The stool slipped from under her feet, and she felt herself falling backward. She closed her eyes, preparing herself to hit the hard floor, but instead, she felt strong arms wrapping around her body, catching her before she could even touch the ground.
Siren opened her eyes in shock. Her heart was beating fast, not just because of the fall, but because when she looked up, she realized who was holding her. It was Simon Agreste.
For the first time in four years, Siren looked directly into his eyes.
Her breath hitched. She had imagined his eyes many times—cold, sharp, and intimidating. But right now, looking into them up close, she saw something different. There was concern in his gaze, and a warmth that she never thought he was capable of showing. His eyes were deep, dark, and seemed to hold so many secrets, but in that moment, they were looking at her as if she was the most important thing in the world.
“Are you alright?” Simon asked, his voice deep but gentle, very different from the stern tone he usually used when speaking to others.
Siren quickly pulled herself away from his hold, her face turning red in embarrassment and nervousness. She immediately bowed her head, her hands shaking slightly.
“I-I am sorry, Sir! I am very sorry! I was being careless… I did not mean to make you worry or cause trouble. I am okay, I am fine… thank you for saving me, Sir,” she stammered, her voice trembling.
She was scared. She thought she would be scolded, punished, or even fired for being so clumsy and for getting too close to him. She waited for his anger, but it never came.
Simon stood there, looking at her bowed head. He noticed how she was trembling, how she was trying to make herself look small, and how she was still avoiding his gaze even after looking at him for a few seconds. He realized that she was afraid of him, not because she thought he was a bad person, but because she knew their places in life were worlds apart.
“Look at me, Siren,” Simon said softly.
Siren hesitated for a moment, then slowly lifted her head again, her eyes filled with fear and uncertainty.
“You do not need to be afraid of me,” Simon told her sincerely. “I am not going to hurt you or scold you. You did nothing wrong. Accidents happen. Just be more careful next time, okay? The shelves are high, you can ask for help if you need it.”
Siren nodded slowly, surprised by how kind he was being to her. “Y-Yes, Sir. Thank you.”
Simon looked at her for a few more seconds, wanting to say so many things, wanting to tell her how he really felt, but he knew it was not the right time yet. He did not want to scare her or make her feel uncomfortable.
“I will leave you to your work,” he said finally. “Take care of yourself.”
As Simon walked away, Siren stood there, her heart still racing. She touched her chest, feeling the strange feeling that was spreading inside her. It was a mix of fear, confusion, and something else she could not name.
Meanwhile, Simon walked down the hallway with a smile on his face—a smile that no one had seen on him for years. That short moment with her had made him realize that he could not hide his feelings forever. He knew what he wanted now, and he was determined to make it happen, no matter what stood in his way.
