CH4: Fears and Doubts

Simon reached out and gently held her trembling hands, his touch warm and reassuring. He could feel how scared she was, and it broke his heart knowing that the world had made her believe she was less than worthy of love.

“I understand everything you are saying, Siren,” Simon said softly, his voice calm but firm. “I know exactly what people will say. I know they will judge you, they will make up stories, and they will try to hurt you. But let me ask you this—does their opinion matter more than how we feel? Does what society thinks matter more than the happiness we can have together?”

He squeezed her hands gently. “You said I am older, that I have experienced more things. That is true. But do you know what I have learned from all those years? I learned that age, status, and money mean nothing when it comes to true love. I have met women who are my age, who come from powerful families, who have everything the world says is perfect. But none of them had the heart that you have. None of them made me feel alive the way you do.”

Siren looked down at their joined hands, tears finally falling down her cheeks. “But Simon… what if you get tired of me? What if one day you realize that you made a mistake? I have nothing to offer you. I don’t have wealth, I don’t have power, I don’t even have a good family background. I was sold by my own parents. How can I ever be the wife of someone like you?”

Simon moved closer, wiping her tears with his thumb. “You are wrong, my love. You have everything I need. You have a heart that is pure and kind. You have strength that amazes me every single day. You have the ability to love truly and faithfully. Those are things that money cannot buy and power cannot create. Those are the things that make you more valuable than anyone else I have ever known.”

He looked deep into her eyes, making sure she understood every word he said. “And about your family… that is not your fault. What your parents did does not define who you are. You are not what they did. You are who you chose to become. And you chose to be good, you chose to be strong, and you chose to protect the people you love. That is the real you, and that is the woman I fell in love with.”

Siren felt her heart softening. For so long, she had carried the weight of her parents’ actions, believing that she was stained and unworthy because of what they did. But hearing him say these things made her realize that maybe, just maybe, she was not as worthless as she thought.

“But your grandmother…” Siren whispered. “She said she will accept anyone, but will she really accept someone like me? Someone who came from nothing, someone who was sold by her own family? I am scared that when she meets me, she will change her mind and force you to marry someone else.”

Simon smiled confidently. “You don’t have to worry about my grandmother. She is the kindest and most understanding person I know. She taught me that love sees beyond everything. She told me herself that it does not matter who the woman is or where she comes from. As long as I love her and she loves me, that is all that matters. She will love you, Siren. I know she will.”

Siren stayed silent for a moment, her mind and heart fighting between fear and hope. She looked at Simon—at his face, his eyes, and the way he was looking at her like she was the most precious treasure in the world. She had never felt this way before. For the first time in her life, she felt like she belonged somewhere.

“Simon…” she said finally, her voice still shaking but more sure than before. “I… I also have feelings for you. I have had them for a long time, but I was too scared to admit it, even to myself. I thought it was impossible, that it was just a dream that would eventually break. But… if you are willing to fight for us… then I am willing too. I will try my best to be brave. I will try to trust you and trust what we have.”

A bright smile spread across Simon’s face—the kind of smile that reached his eyes and made him look younger and happier than ever. He pulled her gently into his arms, holding her carefully as if she was made of glass.

“Thank you, Siren,” he whispered against her hair. “You just made me the happiest man in the world. I promise you, I will spend every day proving to you that you made the right choice. I will protect you, I will take care of you, and I will love you with everything I have. Nothing and no one will ever hurt you again. You are safe now… safe under my watch.”
