WHERE THE LIGHT STAYS (AFTER DARK)

Namjoon and Seokjin leave just after lunch.

It’s casual—too casual.

“We’ll be back late,” Seokjin says, grabbing his keys. “Don’t burn the house down.”

Taehyung rolls his eyes. “That was a mistake.”

"Almost" Namjoon corrects absently, already halfway out the door.

The house falls quiet the moment they leave.

Not empty.

Just… different.

Jungkook notices it immediately.

The absence.

The space.

And the fact that now—

it’s just the two of them.

Taehyung doesn’t seem affected.

He stretches lazily on the couch, flipping through channels like nothing has changed.

Jungkook stands by the doorway longer than necessary.

Watching.

Again.

“Are you going to stand there all day,” Taehyung says without looking at him, “or are you going to sit?”

Jungkook doesn’t answer.

But he walks in anyway.

They settle into something that almost feels normal.

Almost.

The TV plays quietly in the background—some random show neither of them is really paying attention to.

Taehyung sits comfortably, one arm resting behind his head, completely at ease.

Jungkook sits at the other end of the couch.

Not close.

Not far.

Minutes pass.

Then—

“You always this quiet?” Taehyung asks.

Jungkook doesn’t look at him. “You always talk this much?”

A soft huff of amusement.

“Only when someone gives me nothing to work with.”

Silence again.

But it’s not empty.

It lingers.

...........................................

Eventually, Taehyung gets up.

“Come on.”

Jungkook frowns slightly. “Where?”

“You’ll see.”

He follows.

Of course he does.

The kitchen is warm, sunlight still spilling across the counters.

Taehyung moves easily, grabbing ingredients like he’s done it a thousand times.

“Can you cut that?” he asks, sliding something across the counter toward Jungkook.

Jungkook hesitates.

Then—does it.

They cook in quiet.

Not awkward.

Just… aware.

Taehyung hums under his breath while he works.

Jungkook notices.

The way he moves.

The way he doesn’t rush.

The way everything about him feels… steady.

“You’re staring again.”

Jungkook freezes for half a second. Stunned.

“I’m not.”

Taehyung glances over, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

“You are.”

Jungkook looks away. Blushing from his ears to the neck.

But it’s too late.

They eat at the table.

Across from each other.

The air feels heavier now.

Closer.

...........................................

“Jimin’s just a friend,” Taehyung says suddenly.

Jungkook looks up.

Caught off guard.

“I didn’t ask.”

“No,” Taehyung replies calmly. “But you were thinking about it.”

Jungkook’s jaw tightens.

He doesn’t deny it.

“He kissed me,” Taehyung continues, tone casual. “I didn’t expect it.”

A pause.

Then—

“I didn’t want it.”

Something shifts.

Subtle.

But real.

Jungkook looks down at his plate.

“…Okay.”

It’s a simple word.

But it carries more than it should.

After they finish eating, Taehyung disappears down the hall.

The sound of running water follows.

Jungkook sits there longer than necessary.

Thinking.

Replaying.

Again.

..................................................................................

When Taehyung comes back, his hair is damp, shirt slightly different, sleeves pushed up.

Fresh.

Unbothered.

Jungkook’s gaze lingers.

Again.

“Bathroom’s free,” Taehyung says.

Jungkook nods once.

And goes.

The shower is too hot.

Or maybe it’s just him.

He stands there longer than needed, letting the water run, trying to quiet the constant pull in his chest.

It doesn’t work.

When he comes back out, Taehyung is on the floor now, sitting cross-legged in front of the TV, a game controller in his hands.

“You play?” Taehyung asks without looking up.

Jungkook pauses.

“…A little.”

“Good,” Taehyung says, tossing him the second controller.

“Come here.”

Jungkook sits.

Closer this time.

Not by much.

But enough.

They play.

At first, it’s quiet.

Focused.

Then—

“You’re terrible,” Taehyung says.

Jungkook scoffs. “I just started.”

“Excuses.”

Something lighter slips in.

Just for a moment.

Taehyung laughs when he wins.

Not loud.

But real.

Jungkook feels it again—

that pull.

Stronger now.

At some point, their shoulders brush.

Accidentally.

Neither of them moves.

The game keeps going.

But the focus is gone.

Jungkook is aware of everything.

The space between them.

The warmth.

The way Taehyung doesn’t pull away.

“Why do you keep looking at me like that?” Taehyung asks quietly.

The question lands differently this time.

He’s not teasing.

Not fully.

Jungkook turns.

They’re close.

Too close.

“I’m not,” Jungkook says.

But it’s weaker now.

Less convincing.

Taehyung studies him.

Calm.

Steady.

“You don’t have to lie,” he says softly.

Silence stretches.

Heavy.

Jungkook doesn’t look away.

Not this time.

“I don’t understand you,” he admits.

It comes out low.

Honest

..................................................................................Taehyung tilts his head slightly.

“Then stop trying to.”

A pause.

Then, quieter—

“Just feel it.”

That word—

lands.

Neither of them moves.

The world outside feels far away.

Muted.

Jungkook’s chest tightens again.

Stronger now.

Unavoidable.

But he doesn’t step back.

And Taehyung doesn’t

For the first time, Jungkook stops fighting it—

and realizes the feeling isn’t fading.

It’s growing.

Night settles slowly.

The kind that doesn’t arrive all at once—but seeps in, soft and steady, until everything feels quieter than it should.

The house is dim.

Only a single lamp in the living room stays on, casting warm light across the floor where they’re still sitting.

The game has been paused for a while now.

Neither of them remembers when.

Taehyung leans back on his hands, head tilted slightly toward the ceiling, like he’s listening to something far away.

Jungkook sits beside him.

Closer than before.

Not touching.

But close enough to feel the space between them.

“You’re thinking too loud,” Taehyung says softly.

Jungkook glances at him. “That doesn’t make sense.”

Taehyung turns his head just enough to meet his eyes.

“It does when you won’t say anything.”

Jungkook looks away first.

But not by much.

“I don’t talk just to fill silence,” he says.

Taehyung hums.

“I know.”

A pause.

Then—

“That’s why it matters when you do.”

That lands deeper than it should.

The clock ticks somewhere in the background.

Slow. Steady.

“You should sleep,” Jungkook says after a while.

It sounds like a suggestion.

It isn’t.

Taehyung watches him.

“You first.”

Jungkook exhales quietly.

“I’m not tired.”

“Liar,” Taehyung murmurs, almost amused. Smirking subtlety.

Silence again.

But this time it stretches too long.

Too full.

Eventually, Taehyung stands.

The movement feels louder than it is.

“I’ll go,” he says, voice softer now.

Jungkook nods once.

Doesn’t look up.

Taehyung hesitates.

Just for a second.

Like he might say something else.

He doesn’t.

“Goodnight, Jungkook.”

“…Goodnight.”

The hallway swallows the sound of his footsteps.

And just like that—

Jungkook is alone.

Or he should be.

He stays on the floor for a while.

Long enough for the light to feel dimmer.

For the quiet to feel heavier.

Then he stands.

Walks to his room.

Closes the door.

And still—

it doesn’t go away.

The feeling.

The pull.

The way his mind keeps circling back.

Jungkook sits on the edge of his bed, staring at nothing.

Trying—failing—to push it down.

He lasts ten minutes.

Maybe less.

Then—

He’s back in the hallway.

He doesn’t knock.

He doesn’t think.

He just opens the door.

☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻

Taehyung is awake.

Of course he is.

Lying on his side, one arm tucked under his head, eyes already on the door like he expected it.

“You took your time,” Taehyung says quietly.

☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻(lol even iam excited)

Jungkook doesn’t answer.

He steps inside.

Closes the door behind him.

The room feels smaller.

Or maybe it’s just the way Taehyung looks at him.

“I couldn’t sleep,” Jungkook says.

It’s the first honest thing he’s said all night.

Taehyung sits up slowly.

Doesn’t rush.

Doesn’t question it.

“Come here.”

Simple.

Easy.

Like it’s obvious.

Jungkook hesitates.

Only for a second.

Then he moves.

Stops a few steps away.

Not too close.

Not far enough.

Silence settles again.

But this time—

it’s different.

“You’re fighting something,” Taehyung says softly.

Not asking.

Knowing.

Jungkook’s jaw tightens.

“I don’t—”

“Jungkook.”

His name cuts through the room.

Gentler than before.

But firmer.

Jungkook stops.

Taehyung looks at him—really looks.

Steady.

Unshaken.

“You don’t have to figure it out tonight,” he says.

A pause.

Then—

“But don’t pretend it’s not there.”

Jungkook exhales slowly.

Like he’s been holding it in for too long.

“…It’s you.”

The words hang in the air.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Taehyung doesn’t react immediately.

Doesn’t look surprised.

“I know,” he says quietly.

That shouldn’t make it worse.

But it does.

Jungkook takes a step closer.

Then another.

“I don’t—” he starts, then stops.

Frustration flickers across his face.

“I don’t understand it.”

Taehyung tilts his head slightly.

“You don’t need to.”

They’re close now.

Too close.

“You’re always there,” Jungkook continues, voice lower. “Even when you’re not.”

Taehyung’s gaze softens—just a little.

“That sounds exhausting.”

“It is.”

A pause.

Then—

“Stop running from it.”

Jungkook lets out a quiet breath.

Not quite a laugh.

Not quite relief.

“I don’t think I can.”

Taehyung holds his gaze.

Long. Steady.

“Good.”

The word lands softly.

But it changes everything.

Neither of them moves.

The space between them feels… fragile now.

Like something will break if they do too much—

or too little.

So they stay there.

Close.

Aware.

Breathing the same air.

And for once—

Jungkook doesn’t try to step back.

He came here to escape it—

but standing this close, Jungkook realizes—

he doesn’t want to anymore.
