The next morning, Clara woke up feeling as though she was floating on cloud nine. For the first time in years, she did not wake up feeling worried or tired. Instead, her heart was light and full of happiness, and there was a bright smile on her face from the moment she opened her eyes. Everything had changed in just a few days—the man she thought was cold and unfeeling was actually the most loving person in the world, and the job she thought was just a means to survive had become the place where she found her true happiness.
As she got ready, she noticed that there were several luxurious cars parked outside her small house. A group of people dressed in neat, professional uniforms were waiting patiently. One of them approached her respectfully and bowed slightly.
“Good morning, Miss Clara,” the man said politely. “Mr. Blackwood sent us here. We are the medical team and household staff he arranged for you and your family. The doctors are here to check on your mother’s condition and prepare everything for her treatment and transfer to the best private hospital in the city. The rest of us are here to assist you with anything you need.”
Clara stood there, stunned and deeply moved. She had only mentioned her mother’s situation yesterday, and already Ethan had done so much. He didn’t just make promises; he acted immediately, turning his words into reality.
“Thank you… thank you so much,” Clara said, her voice trembling with emotion. “Mr. Blackwood really didn’t have to do all this…”
“Miss Clara,” the head doctor said with a gentle smile, “Mr. Blackwood told us that your family is now our priority. He said that your mother’s health is just as important as any major business deal he handles. We will do everything in our power to make sure she recovers fully.”
While the medical team went inside to attend to her mother, Clara’s phone rang. She picked it up immediately, knowing who it was even before looking at the screen. Just seeing his name on the display made her heart beat faster.
“Good morning, Ethan,” she answered, her voice soft and sweet.
“Good morning, my love,” Ethan’s voice came through the line, warm and gentle, making her feel as though he was right there beside her. “Did you sleep well? Are you feeling better today? How is your hand?”
“I slept very well, and I feel great,” Clara replied happily. “And my hand is almost completely healed. Thank you for sending everyone here. I… I don’t know how to thank you. You are doing so much for us, and I feel like I can never repay you.”
There was a soft chuckle from the other end of the line. “You don’t need to repay me, Clara. Just being happy and being with me is more than enough payment. Listen, I have a very important meeting this morning that I cannot reschedule, but I will send a car to pick you up. When you arrive at the office, just rest or do whatever you like. You don’t have to work today. I also arranged for breakfast to be waiting for you in my private lounge. I will see you as soon as my meeting is done.”
“Okay,” Clara said, smiling. “I’ll wait for you. Drive safely, Ethan.”
“I always do, especially now that I have you waiting for me.”
After ending the call, Clara helped the staff prepare everything. Seeing her mother being taken care of with such professionalism and care brought tears of joy to her eyes. She knew that from this day forward, her family’s life would be better, all thanks to the man who had captured her heart.
When Clara arrived at the Blackwood Corporation building, the atmosphere was different from before. In the past, people looked at her with pity or indifference. But now, as she walked through the lobby, everyone looked at her with a mix of respect, curiosity, and awe. News about her relationship with the CEO had spread like wildfire throughout the company, and everyone now knew that this simple-looking woman held the heart of their powerful boss.
However, not all the looks she received were kind. Some of the female employees looked at her with jealousy and disdain, whispering behind her back, saying things like, “She must have used some tricks to get him to fall for her,” or “He will get tired of her soon. She doesn’t belong in this world.”
Clara tried her best to ignore them. She knew that people would talk, and she knew that many would not understand or accept their relationship. But she also knew that as long as she had Ethan’s love and trust, nothing else mattered.
She walked toward the elevator, but before she could reach it, a woman stepped in front of her, blocking her path. Clara looked up and saw a woman who was tall, elegant, and dressed in the most expensive designer clothes. She was beautiful, with sharp features and eyes that held a cold and arrogant look. Standing beside her were two bodyguards, and the way she carried herself showed that she was someone of high status and power.
“Are you Clara Bennett?” the woman asked, her voice dripping with disdain and annoyance.
Clara nodded politely. “Yes, I am. May I ask who you are?”
The woman let out a short, mocking laugh. “You don’t know who I am? How pathetic. I am Isabella Morgan. My father is the owner of Morgan Industries, and I am the woman everyone knows is destined to be by Ethan Blackwood’s side. Or at least, that is how it was supposed to be… until you came along.”
Clara felt a heavy feeling settle in her chest. She had heard about Isabella Morgan from the rumors and gossip in the office. Everyone said that she was the perfect match for Ethan—from a wealthy family, beautiful, and influential. Many believed that their marriage was already arranged or would happen soon.
“It is nice to meet you, Miss Morgan,” Clara said calmly, trying to remain polite despite the hostility she was receiving. “But I don’t understand what you mean. Ethan and I are together because we love each other. There is no place for destiny or arrangements in this.”
“Love?” Isabella repeated the word as if it was something dirty and ridiculous. She took a step closer, her eyes narrowing as she looked Clara up and down with a look of pure disgust. “You dare to speak of love? Do you even know what love is? Or do you just know how to use your innocence and poor background to gain sympathy and trap a rich man? Look at yourself, Clara. You have nothing. No wealth, no status, no power. You are just a nobody from the lower class. How dare you think you are worthy of standing beside someone as great and powerful as Ethan Blackwood?”
Her words were sharp and hurtful, aimed directly at the insecurities that Clara sometimes felt deep inside. “You think he loves you now? You think this happiness will last? You are just a passing fancy, a little toy he is playing with because he is bored. Soon enough, he will realize his mistake. He will realize that you cannot give him what he needs, that you cannot help him with his business or his family. And when that happens, he will throw you aside like trash. And when that day comes, you will have nothing left. You will be even more miserable than you were before you met him.”
Isabella paused, letting her words sink in before continuing in a threatening tone.
“I am warning you now, Clara Bennett. Leave him. Go back to where you came from and forget you ever met him. If you do this willingly, I might even give you some money so you can live a comfortable life with your family. But if you refuse… if you continue to cling to him and try to take what is mine… I will make sure you regret the day you were born. I have the power and the connections to destroy your life completely. I can make sure you never find work anywhere. I can make sure your family suffers. I can even make sure your mother never gets the proper treatment she needs. Do you understand me? Stay away from Ethan… or else.”
Clara stood there, her hands clenched tightly into fists, her heart aching from every word Isabella had said. She knew that Isabella was speaking out of jealousy and anger, but there was truth in some of her words too. She was just an ordinary girl, and the world Ethan lived in was full of rules, status, and power. She really did not have anything to offer him except her love. For a moment, doubt began to creep into her mind. Is she right? Am I really not good enough? Will Ethan get tired of me one day?
But then, she remembered everything Ethan had told her. She remembered his sincerity, his sacrifices, and the way he looked at her as if she was the most precious treasure in the world. She remembered that he had loved her long before he knew who she was or what she had. He loved her for who she was, not for what she had.
Clara lifted her head, and although there were tears in her eyes, her expression was firm and determined. She looked Isabella straight in the eye, refusing to back down or show weakness.
“I understand what you are saying, Miss Morgan,” Clara said, her voice steady and clear. “And I know very well that I am not as rich or as powerful as you are. I know that I come from a simple background, and I know that there are many things I do not have. But there is one thing I have that you do not have… and that is Ethan’s heart. He chose me, and he loves me, and that is all that matters. You can say whatever you want, you can threaten me as much as you like, but I will never leave him. I love him, and I know he loves me. As long as he wants me by his side, I will stay there. And I believe in him, and I believe in us. You may have money and status, but you will never have his love, because love cannot be bought or taken by force. It is given freely to those who deserve it.”
Isabella’s face turned red with rage. She did not expect Clara, who looked so soft and gentle, to have such courage and strength. She raised her hand, ready to slap Clara across the face in her anger, but before her hand could make contact, a strong hand caught her wrist mid-air, stopping her instantly.
“WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?”
The voice was cold, icy, and filled with such terrifying anger that it made everyone in the lobby freeze in fear. It was a voice that commanded absolute authority and power, a voice that belonged to none other than Ethan Blackwood himself.
Ethan had just arrived, and he had seen everything. He had heard every word Isabella had said, and he had seen her raise her hand to hurt the woman he loved. His face was dark, his eyes burning with fury, and the aura around him was so intimidating that even the security guards and employees standing nearby did not dare to breathe too loudly.
He threw Isabella’s hand away roughly, as if touching her was something disgusting to him. He immediately stepped in front of Clara, shielding her completely with his body, standing between her and Isabella like a fierce guardian protecting his most prized possession.
“E-Ethan…” Isabella stammered, her arrogant attitude completely gone, replaced by fear and panic. “I… I was just talking to her. I didn’t mean to…”
“Talking?” Ethan interrupted, his voice sharp and dangerous. “You call insulting her, threatening her, and trying to hit her ‘just talking’? Isabella, have you lost your mind? Do you think you have the right to speak to her like that? Or to touch her? Or even to stand in the same space as her and pollute it with your presence?”
He turned his cold gaze toward her, making her tremble in fear.
“Let me make this very clear to you, and to everyone else who is watching,” Ethan said loudly, ensuring that his words reached every corner of the lobby and everyone present. “Clara Bennett is the woman I love. She is the owner of my heart, and she is the only person who will ever stand beside me. Anyone who dares to hurt her, insult her, or threaten her… is making an enemy of me. And you all know very well what happens to people who become my enemies. They lose everything. Their wealth, their status, their reputation… everything is taken away from them until they have nothing left.”
He pointed at Isabella, his eyes full of disgust.
“As for you, Isabella Morgan… you and your family have been trying to force this so-called ‘arrangement’ upon me for years, thinking that your wealth and influence are enough to buy me or control me. Let me tell you this right now. I will never marry you. Not now, not ever. You and your family are nothing to me. From this moment on, the business relationship between our companies is completely terminated. You are banned from entering this building, and you are forbidden from ever coming near Clara or me again. If you dare to show your face here one more time, or if you dare to cause any trouble for Clara or her family… I will make sure that the Morgan Group goes bankrupt within a week. I have the power to do it, and I will not hesitate to do it. Do you understand?”
Isabella stood there, pale and shaking, tears streaming down her face. She had never seen Ethan this angry, and she knew he was not making empty threats. He had the power and the resources to destroy her family’s business easily.
“Ethan… please… don’t do this…” she begged, but her words fell on deaf ears.
“Get out,” Ethan said coldly, turning his back on her, indicating that she was no longer worthy of his attention. “And don’t ever let me see you again.”
Humiliated and defeated, Isabella had no choice but to leave, escorted by security guards who made sure she left the premises immediately. The people watching were completely shocked. They had always known Ethan was powerful, but seeing him give up such a huge business connection and risk a war with the Morgan family just to protect Clara showed them exactly how deep his love ran.
Once they were alone, Ethan turned around to face Clara. The anger and coldness in his eyes instantly vanished, replaced by deep concern and tenderness. He gently cupped her face in his hands, looking at her carefully to check if she was hurt or upset.
“Clara… my love… are you alright? Did she hurt you? Did she say anything that upset you?” he asked softly, his voice filled with worry.
Clara looked at him, and all the fear and sadness she had felt earlier melted away. She could feel the sincerity and love radiating from him, and she knew without a doubt that she had made the right choice. She reached up and placed her hands over his, smiling through her tears.
“I’m fine, Ethan,” she whispered. “I’m okay. Hearing you say those words… seeing you protect me like that… it makes me feel like I can face anything. Thank you. Thank you for believing in me, and thank you for choosing me.”
Ethan pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest, resting his chin on top of her head.
“You never have to thank me for that,” he said gently. “I told you, didn’t I? You are my life. Anyone who hurts you hurts me. Anyone who insults you insults me. I don’t care who they are or how powerful they are. No one is allowed to treat you that way. And don’t ever listen to what people like Isabella say. They don’t know us. They don’t know our story. You are not just good enough for me, Clara. You are the only one good enough. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I will spend every day proving that to you.”
He pulled back slightly to look into her eyes, his expression becoming serious again.
“But you must understand, my love… what happened today is just the beginning. Isabella is not the only one who will try to come between us. My parents, my relatives, and many others will do everything they can to stop us. They will use every method possible—threats, pressure, lies, and schemes. The road ahead will be difficult and dangerous. There will be times when it feels like the whole world is against us. Are you sure you are ready to face all of this with me? Are you sure you can stay strong when things get really hard?”
Clara looked at him, her eyes shining with love and determination. She nodded firmly, placing her hand over his heart.
“I am sure, Ethan. I am ready. Because as long as I have you, I am strong enough to face anything. We will fight together, and we will win together. Nothing and no one can break us apart.”
Ethan smiled, a smile that was both happy and proud. He leaned down and pressed a soft, loving kiss on her forehead.
“That’s my girl,” he whispered. “Then let them come. Let them do their worst. As long as we are together, we are invincible.”
But even as they shared this beautiful moment of love and unity, they both knew that the real storm was just beginning. Isabella was gone, but the Blackwood family was waiting, and they were far more powerful, far more cunning, and far more determined than anyone else. The real test of their love was yet to come.
