Chapter 5: Meeting the Family

The atmosphere in the office was filled with warmth and peace as the days passed after the incident with Isabella. Ethan kept his promise to Clara—he made sure that she was comfortable, safe, and happy in every way possible. Her mother was transferred to the best hospital in the country, receiving treatment from the most famous specialists, and her health was improving day by day. Clara’s siblings were also given the best education and care, something that she had only dreamed of before.

For Clara, every day felt like a beautiful dream. She would wake up knowing that she was loved and cherished by the man she loved most in the world. Ethan made sure to show his love not just through words, but through his actions. He would bring her favorite food every morning, remember every small detail she mentioned, and always make time for her no matter how busy his schedule was. He had truly become the most caring and devoted partner anyone could ever ask for.

But despite all this happiness, there was still a heavy feeling lingering in both of their hearts. They both knew that this peace was temporary. They both knew that the biggest obstacle standing in their way was Ethan’s own family—his parents, who held great power and influence, and who were known for being strict and unyielding when it came to matters of status and family honor.

One afternoon, while they were sitting together in Ethan’s private lounge, enjoying a quiet moment after work, Ethan received a phone call. As he spoke to the person on the other end, his expression slowly turned serious and heavy. When he ended the call, he looked at Clara with a mixture of concern and sadness.

“Clara…” he said softly, reaching out to hold her hands gently. “That was my mother. She… she has invited us to dinner tonight at the main family mansion. She said it is time for me to bring the woman I love to meet my parents properly.”

Clara felt her heart skip a beat, and a wave of nervousness washed over her. She had been expecting this day to come, but now that it was actually here, she felt scared and unsure. She knew how much Ethan’s parents disapproved of their relationship, and she knew that this meeting would not be easy. It would be the real test of everything they had built together.

“Are you okay?” Ethan asked immediately, noticing the change in her expression. “We don’t have to go if you don’t want to. I can tell them you are not feeling well, or I can go alone and talk to them myself. I don’t want you to feel pressured or uncomfortable.”

Clara took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. She looked at Ethan, and seeing the love and care in his eyes gave her the strength she needed. She knew that she could not hide forever. If she wanted to be with Ethan, if she wanted to be part of his life and his world, then she had to face this challenge head-on.

“No, Ethan,” Clara said firmly, though her voice still trembled slightly. “I want to go. I need to go. Your parents are the most important people in your life, and I want to meet them properly. I want to show them that my love for you is real, and that I am serious about being with you. Even if they don’t accept me at first… I will do my best to make them see who I really am. I will not run away from this.”

Ethan smiled sadly, his eyes filled with love and admiration. “You are the bravest woman I have ever known, Clara. But please… promise me that no matter what happens tonight, no matter what they say or do, you will not take it too much to heart. They are my parents, and I respect them, but I will never let them hurt you or make you feel small. If they say anything bad or treat you unfairly, I will step in immediately. You just need to be yourself, and I will handle everything else. Okay?”

Clara nodded, squeezing his hand gently. “Okay. I trust you.”

As evening came, Ethan drove Clara to the Blackwood family mansion. It was a grand, enormous building located on top of a hill, surrounded by beautiful gardens and high walls. It looked like a palace, magnificent and imposing, and as they walked toward the main entrance, Clara felt even smaller and more nervous than before.

When they entered the large dining hall, Ethan’s parents were already waiting for them. Sitting at the head of the long dining table was Mr. Arthur Blackwood, Ethan’s father. He looked exactly as Clara had imagined—stern, serious, and intimidating, with a face that showed no sign of warmth or kindness. Beside him sat Mrs. Vivian Blackwood, elegant and beautiful, but her eyes were cold and sharp, looking at Clara as if she was something unpleasant that had accidentally entered their home.

Also present were Ethan’s relatives, including his cousin Lucas, who was sitting in the corner with a sly and mocking smile on his face, clearly enjoying the situation and waiting to see what would happen.

“Good evening, Father, Mother,” Ethan said calmly as he walked in, holding Clara’s hand tightly, refusing to let go even for a second. “This is Clara Bennett. The woman I love, and the woman I plan to spend the rest of my life with.”

Clara bowed her head respectfully, her voice soft and polite. “Good evening, Sir, Ma’am. It is an honor to meet you.”

Mr. Blackwood looked at her from head to toe, his expression remaining cold and unimpressed. “Honor? I don’t see what honor there is in this situation. You are the girl who has been causing trouble in our family, the girl who has turned my son’s head upside down and made him forget all his responsibilities and duties. You really have some nerve coming here and acting as if you belong here.”

His words were harsh and direct, hitting Clara right in the heart. She felt her eyes stinging with tears, but she bit her lip and kept her head up, remembering Ethan’s words to stay strong.

“Father, please,” Ethan said, his voice firm and filled with warning. “I asked you to meet her properly, not to insult her. Clara is the most wonderful person I have ever known, and she has done nothing wrong. If you have problems with our relationship, you can talk to me, but you have no right to speak to her like that.”

“Look at you!” Mrs. Blackwood spoke up, her voice sharp and filled with disappointment. “You are defending her already, just like you always do. Ethan, have you lost your mind? Do you not understand the situation you are putting yourself and our family in? This girl… she comes from nothing. She has no status, no wealth, no influence. She has nothing to offer you or our family. Do you think a person like her can handle the life you lead? Do you think she can stand by your side and represent our family in front of the whole world? She is too simple, too ordinary, and she does not belong in this world we live in!”

“Ma’am, I know I am not as wealthy or as powerful as you are,” Clara spoke up, her voice shaking but sincere. “And I know that I come from a simple background. But what I lack in wealth and status, I make up for with my sincerity and my love for Ethan. I love him with all my heart, and I will do everything in my power to make him happy, to support him, and to take care of him. I may not know much about high society or business, but I am willing to learn. I am willing to work hard and do my best to become worthy of him. Please… give me a chance to prove myself.”

Mrs. Blackwood let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Prove yourself? What can you possibly prove? That you are good at housework? That you are good at being a servant? That is all you are good for! You think love is enough to build a life? You think love can solve all the problems and responsibilities that come with being part of this family? You are just a naive little girl who does not understand anything about the real world!”

“Mother, that is enough!” Ethan shouted, his anger finally showing. “You know nothing about her! You don’t know what she has done for me, you don’t know how much she has suffered, and you don’t know how much goodness there is in her heart! She saved my life! She gave me hope when I had nothing! She is the reason I am standing here today! She is worth more than all the wealth and status in this entire world! How dare you look down on her like this? How dare you treat the person who saved your son’s life as if she is nothing?”

His words shocked everyone in the room. Ethan had never raised his voice against his parents before, no matter how angry or upset he was. But now, seeing them hurt the woman he loved, he could no longer hold back his emotions.

“You say she has nothing to offer?” Ethan continued, his eyes burning with passion and determination. “She has given me the most precious thing anyone can give—life, hope, and love. She has given me a reason to live and to succeed. That is worth more than all the gold and power you value so much! And let me make this clear once and for all. I do not care about status, wealth, or what society thinks. I only care about her. If you cannot accept her, then you are also rejecting me. If you will not welcome her into this family, then I will leave this family and build my own life with her. I will give up everything—my inheritance, my position, my name—everything… just to be with her. Because without her, none of those things mean anything to me!”

The room fell into complete silence. Everyone was stunned by Ethan’s words. His parents looked at him with wide eyes, shocked and hurt by what he had said. They had always known that Ethan was stubborn, but they never thought that he would go this far, that he would be willing to give up everything he had worked for and everything he was entitled to, just for the sake of this girl.

“You… you would really do that?” Mr. Blackwood asked, his voice trembling slightly, filled with disbelief and sadness. “You would give up everything that belongs to you, everything we have built for you, just for her?”

“Yes, Father,” Ethan replied firmly, without any hesitation. “I would. A thousand times over. Because she is my everything. She is my life.”

Lucas, who had been watching quietly all this time, saw that things were not going the way he had planned. He realized that if he continued to let things go like this, Ethan’s love for Clara would only become stronger, and they would never be able to separate them. He decided to step in, using a different method—one that would test Clara’s heart and her true intentions.

“Uncle, Aunt,” Lucas said softly, putting on a look of sympathy and concern. “Please don’t be too angry with Ethan. He is just blinded by love, and he cannot see the truth. But perhaps… we can give Miss Clara a chance. After all, Ethan loves her so much, and we do not want to make him unhappy. If she really loves him as much as she says, and if she really has good intentions, then she will not be afraid to prove it.”

He turned to look at Clara, his eyes holding a dangerous glint.

“Miss Clara,” Lucas said smoothly. “You say you love Ethan more than anything else, and you say you are willing to do anything for him. If that is true… then I have a small request for you. If you can do this, then we will believe you. We will accept you and welcome you into our family with open arms. But if you cannot do it… then it proves that your love is not as strong as you claim, and that you are only here for his wealth and status.”

Clara looked at him, her heart beating fast. “What… what do you want me to do?”

“It is simple,” Lucas said with a smile. “You said you come from a poor family, and you have worked hard all your life. You know what it feels like to struggle, to have nothing, and to work hard just to survive. If you really love Ethan and you want to be with him… then leave everything you have now. Leave the job, leave the house, leave all the help and support Ethan has given you. Take your family and go back to the life you used to live. Live there for three years. Work hard, struggle, and face all the difficulties you faced before. If after three years, your love for him is still the same, and if you still want to be with him… then we will allow you to marry him. But if you cannot do this, if you give up or come back earlier… then it means you only stayed with him because of the good life he gave you. What do you say? Are you willing to do this?”

The whole room held their breath, waiting for her answer. It was a cruel test, designed to make her choose between her happiness and her past life. They thought that Clara would refuse immediately, that she would choose the comfortable life Ethan had given her, proving that she was only after his wealth.

Ethan stood up immediately, his face filled with anger. “Lucas! That is ridiculous! I will never allow that! I worked hard to give her and her family a good life, and you want me to take all of that away just to test her love? That is not fair, and it is not right!”

“Ethan, please…” Clara said softly, placing her hand on his arm to stop him. She looked at Lucas, then at Ethan’s parents, and finally at Ethan himself. Her eyes were filled with clarity and determination.

She took a deep breath and spoke clearly for everyone to hear.

“I accept your condition.”

Everyone was shocked, including Ethan.

“Clara, no!” Ethan said urgently, holding her shoulders. “You don’t have to do this! I won’t let you! I don’t need you to prove anything to them! I already know how much you love me!”

Clara smiled gently at him, tears rolling down her cheeks. “I know, Ethan. And I know you believe me. But I also want them to believe me. I want them to see that my love for you is real, and that it is stronger than any hardship or difficulty. I want them to accept us willingly, not just because you forced them or gave up everything for me. I want them to understand that I am worthy of you, and that our love is true.”

She turned back to look at Ethan’s parents, her expression sincere and strong.

“I accept your challenge. I will take my family and go back to our old home. I will work hard and live the way I used to. For three years, I will not contact you, I will not ask for help, and I will not use anything that belongs to Ethan. I will rely only on myself and my own hard work. And if after three years, my heart is still yours, and your heart is still mine… then we will meet again. And I hope that by then, you will have seen the truth.”

She looked at Ethan one last time, her eyes filled with so much love and sadness.

“Wait for me, Ethan. No matter how hard it gets, no matter how long it takes… I will come back to you. Because you are the only love of my life, and nothing will ever change that.”

“Clara, please…” Ethan pleaded, his eyes filled with tears. “Don’t do this… I can’t be away from you for even a day, how can I survive three years?”

“Then let this be our promise,” Clara said softly. “Three years. Just three years. And after that, we will be together forever, and no one will ever be able to separate us again. Trust me, Ethan. This is the right thing to do.”

And with those words, Clara turned around and walked out of the room, leaving everyone behind, including the man she loved more than anything in the world. Ethan stood there, his heart breaking into pieces, knowing that he could not stop her, knowing that this was her choice to prove their love to the world.
