The city didn’t sleep.
Kai used to think that was just something people said to make places sound important—but tonight, standing across the street from his next target, he understood it differently.
The city didn’t sleep because people like him didn’t let it.
He adjusted his jacket slightly, fingers brushing against the cold metal hidden beneath it. The weight of the gun was familiar. Comforting, even.
Routine.
Breathe in. Observe. Confirm target. Execute. Leave.
Simple.
That’s how it was supposed to be.
But nothing about tonight felt simple.
Because of her.
Across the street, under the flickering glow of a broken streetlight, she stood again.
The same girl.
The same one from the café.
The one who smiled like she didn’t belong in a world like this.
Kai’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Coincidence?
No.
There were no coincidences in his line of work.
She was standing too close to the building he’d been watching for the past hour—the building where his target was supposed to show up.
And worse—
She looked… relaxed.
Like she wasn’t afraid of anything.
“Troublesome…” Kai muttered under his breath.
His instincts were already screaming at him.
Walk away.
Abort the mission.
Something’s wrong.
But Kai didn’t move.
Instead, he watched.
Minutes passed.
Then—
The door behind her opened.
A man stepped out.
Tall. Heavy coat. Nervous eyes.
Target confirmed.
Kai’s hand slipped into his jacket.
Everything slowed.
This was it.
One shot.
Clean.
Precise.
Done.
But just as he began to move—
She turned.
Not toward the man.
Toward him.
Their eyes met across the street.
And she smiled.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Not scared.
She smiled like she had been expecting him.
Kai froze.
Just for a second.
And that second—
Was enough.
The target noticed something.
His head turned sharply, scanning the street.
“Shit.”
Kai clicked his tongue and pulled back into the shadows just as the man retreated inside, slamming the door shut.
Mission failed.
Silence returned.
But Kai wasn’t thinking about the target anymore.
He was thinking about her.
Slowly, he stepped out from the shadows, crossing the street.
She hadn’t moved.
She was still standing there.
Waiting.
“... You ruined my shot,” Kai said coldly.
The girl tilted her head slightly, like she was considering his words.
“Did I?” she asked softly.
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Kai stopped a few steps away from her.
Up close, she looked even more dangerous.
Not because of weapons.
But because she didn’t act like prey.
“You were looking right at me,” he said. “Why?”
She smiled again.
That same smile.
“You’re not very good at hiding,” she replied.
Kai’s eyes sharpened.
That was impossible.
No one had ever—
“Who are you?” he asked.
Instead of answering, she took a step closer.
Now they were too close.
Close enough for him to react instantly if needed.
Close enough to kill.
But he didn’t move.
“Tell me something first,” she said, her voice dropping slightly.
“Do you always hesitate like that…?”
Kai’s grip tightened inside his jacket.
“I don’t hesitate.”
“You did tonight.”
A pause.
Then—
She leaned in slightly.
“So,” she whispered, “was it because of me?”
Kai’s heart skipped.
Annoyance flared instantly.
Danger followed right behind it.
“You think too highly of yourself,” he said.
“Do I?”
She stepped back, hands behind her back, like she was enjoying this far too much.
Then she looked at him—really looked at him.
Not like a stranger.
Like someone who already knew.
“I think,” she said slowly, “you’re not as cold as you pretend to be.”
Silence.
Kai stared at her.
Every instinct he had was telling him one thing.
She’s dangerous.
Not in the obvious way.
But in a way he couldn’t predict.
And unpredictability—
It was the only thing that could get him killed.
“… Stay away from places like this,” Kai said finally, turning slightly. “Next time, you might not get lucky.”
He started to walk away.
Then—
“Next time,” she called out behind him, “don’t miss.”
He stopped.
Just for a second.
Then continued walking without looking back.
But his mind wasn’t calm.
Not anymore.
Because for the first time in years—
A mission wasn’t what stayed with him.
It was a girl.
And the way she smiled…
At the moment he was about to pull the trigger.
That night, Kai didn’t sleep.
Not because of the failed job.
But because he realized something far more dangerous—
He didn’t want to forget her.
And that…
Was a problem.
