The Name That Shouldn’t Exist

Kai didn’t like loose ends.

And right now—

She was the biggest one.

The morning after the failed mission, he sat in his small apartment, the city noise leaking through the cracked window like static. A half-empty cup of coffee sat untouched beside him.

Cold.

Like his mood.

On the table in front of him was a file.

Thin.

Too thin.

Kai flipped it open again.

Target: Riku Sato

Age: 42

Occupation: Import/export (unofficial: money laundering)

Status: Alive

Kai’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Alive.

Because of her.

His fingers tapped lightly against the table, a rare sign of irritation. He didn’t miss shots.

Not like that.

Not because of distraction.

“… Tch.”

He closed the file and leaned back.

There was only one way to fix this.

Finish the job.

But before that—

He needed answers.

Night came faster than he expected.

Or maybe he just stopped noticing time.

Kai stood across the street again.

Same place.

Same broken streetlight.

Same building.

And just like last night—

She was there.

Waiting.

Like she knew he would come.

“… You’ve got to be kidding me,” he muttered.

This time, he didn’t hesitate.

He crossed the street directly.

No shadows. No hiding.

If she was a problem—

He would handle it.

“Persistent,” she said as he approached, her voice almost amused.

“You talk like this is a game,” Kai replied coldly.

“Isn’t it?”

“No.”

He stopped in front of her.

Closer than before.

More dangerous than before.

“Who are you?” he asked again, sharper this time.

She looked at him for a moment.

Then smiled.

But this time—

There was something different in it.

Something darker.

“Alright,” she said softly. “Let’s play fair.”

Kai didn’t like the sound of that.

“My name is—”

She paused.

Like she was enjoying the moment too much.

“Airi.”

Kai said nothing.

Just watched.

Memorized.

Analyzed.

Names mattered.

But something still didn’t add up.

“That’s not enough,” he said.

“I know.”

Airi tilted her head slightly.

“Then let me ask you something instead.”

“No.”

“Yes,” she said, cutting him off effortlessly. “Because this one matters.”

She took a step closer.

“Why is your name on the list?”

Kai froze.

Not visibly.

But inside—

Everything stopped.

“… What?”

Airi reached into her coat.

Kai’s body reacted instantly, hand moving toward his weapon—

But she didn’t pull out a gun.

She pulled out paper.

A folded sheet.

And held it out to him.

“Go on,” she said. “Look.”

Every instinct screamed at him not to.

Trap.

Setup.

Death.

But—

He took it anyway.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then unfolded it.

And his eyes sharpened instantly.

A list.

Names.

Several of them were crossed out.

Cleanly.

Deliberately.

Dead.

And near the bottom—

A name that made his chest go cold.

Kai Ren

Not crossed out.

Not yet.

But circled.

Kai’s grip tightened.

“… What is this?” he asked quietly.

“You tell me,” Airi replied.

Silence stretched between them.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

“You’re lying,” Kai said.

“Am I?”

“This is fake.”

“Then why are you still holding it?”

He didn’t answer.

Because a part of him already knew—

This wasn’t fake.

He looked up at her slowly.

“Where did you get this?”

Airi smiled faintly.

“That’s the wrong question.”

“Then give me the right one.”

She stepped closer again.

Close enough that he could see the faint scar near her collarbone.

Close enough that he could hear her breathe.

“The right question,” she whispered, “is why someone wants you dead.”

Kai’s mind was already moving.

Fast.

Calculating.

Enemies. Jobs. Mistakes.

But in his world—

People didn’t put hits on assassins unless—

They knew too much.

“… Who are you really?” he asked again, his voice lower now.

This time—

Airi didn’t dodge.

“I told you,” she said.

“My name is Airi.”

A pause.

Then—

“And I’m the one assigned to kill you.”

Silence.

The city noise faded into nothing.

Kai stared at her.

Processing.

Replaying every moment.

The café.

The smile.

Last night.

The interruption.

“… You’re serious.”

Airi nodded slightly.

“Very.”

His hand tightened.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

But something close.

“Then why am I still alive?” he asked.

Airi’s expression softened—

Just slightly.

“Because,” she said quietly, “you hesitated first.”

Kai’s chest tightened.

That moment.

She saw it.

She understood it.

And somehow—

That mattered.

“You had a clear shot,” she continued. “But you stopped.”

“So did you.”

“Yes.”

Their eyes locked.

Danger meeting danger.

But something else too.

Something neither of them named.

“Why?” Kai asked.

Airi looked at him for a long second.

Then smiled.

Not playful this time.

Not teasing.

Something real.

“I wanted to see what kind of person hesitates before killing,” she said.

Kai didn’t respond immediately.

Because the truth was—

He didn’t know anymore.

Airi stepped back, creating distance again.

“For now,” she said, “you’re alive.”

“For now?”

She nodded.

“My job hasn’t changed.”

“Then do it,” Kai said coldly. “Or stop pretending.”

Airi laughed softly.

“You really are interesting.”

Then she turned.

And started walking away.

“Wait,” Kai called.

She paused.

But didn’t turn around.

“Why tell me this?” he asked.

A moment of silence.

Then—

“Because,” she said quietly, “it wouldn’t be fair otherwise.”

And just like that—

She disappeared into the night.

Leaving Kai standing there.

Alive.

Marked.

And for the first time in his life—

Hunted.

Kai looked down at the list again.

At his name.

Circled.

Target.

A slow breath left his lips.

“… So that’s how it is.”

His world had just shifted.

And at the center of it—

Was a girl who smiled at guns…

And chose not to pull the trigger.

This wasn’t a job anymore.

It was a war.

And somehow—

He didn’t want to kill her.
