The Lovers Of The Twin

The Lovers Of The Twin

Shattered Beginnings

New York City never slept, and for Lucia, it never forgave.

The city roared with life—honking cars, hurried footsteps, distant sirens blending into a chaotic symphony that echoed through the towering buildings. To many, it was a place of dreams, where ambition thrived and fortunes were made. But for Lucia, it had become a battlefield, one she was fighting on her own.

Standing by the narrow window of their small rented apartment, Lucia watched as the early morning light struggled to break through the gray clouds. The view wasn’t much—just a clutter of fire escapes and brick walls—but it was all they had now.

Once, she had woken up to sunlight pouring through grand glass windows, silk curtains dancing in the breeze, and the comforting scent of freshly brewed coffee prepared by staff. Once, she had lived in a world where money was never a concern, where laughter filled a home that felt unbreakable.

Once… her parents were alive.

Lucia’s fingers tightened around the thin curtain as the memories threatened to pull her under. The accident had changed everything. A single night, a single moment—and the life she knew had been erased.

Their parents’ death had not only taken away love and security, but it had also uncovered a truth Lucia had never imagined. Her father, a respected businessman, had been drowning in debt. Loans stacked upon loans, hidden beneath a polished image. When he died, the creditors came like vultures.

Everything was seized.

The mansion. The cars. The accounts.

Even the jewelry her mother cherished.

All gone.

What remained were two young lives—Lucia and her twin brother, Lucian—left to rebuild from nothing.

Lucia exhaled slowly and turned away from the window. The apartment was small, barely enough for the two of them. A single bedroom, a cramped living space, and a kitchen that looked like it hadn’t been updated in decades. But it was safe, and for now, that was enough.

Behind her, Lucian sat quietly at the small table, flipping through a book. He looked so focused, so calm, that for a moment, it was easy to forget everything they had been through.

Lucia watched him, her chest tightening.

They were twins, born minutes apart, yet the weight of responsibility had fallen heavily on her shoulders. From the moment their world collapsed, Lucia had made a silent promise—to protect him, to provide for him, no matter what it took.

“Did you sleep well?” she asked softly.

Lucian looked up and gave a small nod. “I did. You?”

Lucia forced a faint smile. “Enough.”

It wasn’t entirely true. Sleep had become a luxury she could barely afford—not because she didn’t have the time, but because her mind refused to rest. Worries, plans, fears—they all kept her awake.

But she would never let Lucian see that.

He had already lost too much.

Lucia moved toward the kitchen, grabbing the last pieces of bread they had. She toasted them lightly, pretending it was just another normal morning. Pretending their lives hadn’t fallen apart.

“We need to leave early today,” she said, placing a plate in front of him.

Lucian nodded again, though his eyes lingered on her. He wasn’t naive. He understood more than he let on. But he chose silence, perhaps because he trusted her, or perhaps because he didn’t want to add to her burden.

After breakfast, Lucia grabbed her worn-out bag, checking its contents carefully. Documents, identification, copies of her resume—everything she needed.

Everything she had been using… and failing with.

She had applied everywhere.

Offices, shops, restaurants—any place that might take her. But each time, the answer was the same.

“We’ll call you.”

They never did.

Still, she refused to give up.

Because she couldn’t.

“Are you ready?” she asked.

Lucian stood, picking up his bag. Today was important—not for her, but for him.

After days of struggling, Lucia had managed to secure something that mattered deeply: his education.

She had gone to a bank, her pride set aside, and borrowed money. The process had been humiliating—questions, doubt, cold stares—but she endured it.

Because of that loan, Lucian was now enrolled in a high school in Washington.

It wasn’t ideal. It meant distance. It meant separation.

But it also meant opportunity.

And Lucia would sacrifice anything to give him that.

The journey to the station was quiet. The city bustled around them, indifferent to their struggles. People rushed past, chasing their own goals, unaware of the quiet determination walking beside them.

When they finally arrived, Lucia turned to him.

“Listen to me carefully,” she said, her voice steady but gentle. “Focus on your studies. Don’t worry about anything else. I’ll handle things here.”

Lucian hesitated. “But—”

“No,” she interrupted softly. “This is your chance. Don’t waste it worrying about me.”

There was a pause.

Then, slowly, he nodded.

“I’ll make you proud,” he said.

Lucia smiled, though her eyes glistened slightly. “You already do.”

As the time came for him to leave, Lucia felt something inside her tighten. Letting him go was harder than she had imagined. But she stood strong, watching as he walked away, carrying not just his bag—but her hopes.

When he disappeared from sight, the silence felt heavier than ever.

Lucia stood there for a moment longer, gathering herself.

Then she turned back toward the city.

Now, it was her turn to fight.

The rest of the day passed in a blur of rejection.

Office after office.

Application after application.

Each door she entered carried a flicker of hope. Each one she left extinguished it a little more.

By evening, her feet ached, and her energy was nearly gone. But she kept walking.

She had to.

As she turned a corner, something caught her eye—a tall building, more elegant than the others around it. Its glass exterior reflected the fading light, giving it an almost untouchable presence.

Lucia stopped.

She hadn’t applied here.

Maybe because it seemed out of reach.

Maybe because she feared another rejection.

But standing there, with nothing left to lose, she felt a spark of determination rise within her.

“What if…?” she whispered to herself.

It was a risk.

But so was everything else.

Taking a deep breath, Lucia straightened her posture and stepped forward.

One more try.

One more chance.

Because failure was not an option.

Not when someone was depending on her.

As she approached the entrance, the doors opened automatically, as if inviting her into a new chapter of her life.

Lucia clenched her bag tightly.

This could change everything.

Or break what little hope she had left.

Either way… she was walking in.

And she wasn’t turning back.
