Invitations and Illusions

Days turned into weeks, and for Lucia, life began to take on a rhythm she had almost forgotten.

She worked tirelessly.

From the moment she arrived at the office each morning to the late hours of the evening, Lucia gave everything she had. She organized schedules, managed calls, prepared documents, and anticipated Kelvin’s needs before he even spoke them. At first, it had been overwhelming—but now, she was adapting.

Learning.

Improving.

Becoming indispensable.

Her transformation did not go unnoticed.

“You’re doing well,” one of the senior staff members told her one afternoon, a hint of approval in their voice.

Lucia smiled politely. “Thank you.”

But her motivation wasn’t praise.

It was Lucian.

Every paycheck she received was carefully planned. She paid off part of her loan, sent money to her brother, covered his rent, and made sure he lacked nothing. Clothes, books, even small luxuries—things he had once lost—were slowly returning to his life.

And that alone made every hardship worth it.

That evening, Lucia sat at her desk reviewing a file when her phone buzzed.

A message.

“Come to my office.” —Kel.

Lucia straightened immediately.

“Yes, sir,” she whispered to herself, already standing.

She grabbed her notepad and walked toward his office, her heels clicking softly against the floor.

When she knocked, his voice came as usual—calm and steady.

“Come in.”

Lucia entered and stood respectfully.

“You called for me?”

Kelvin looked up from his desk, his expression neutral but focused.

“Yes.”

He gestured for her to sit, which she did carefully.

“There will be an auction next week,” he began.

Lucia blinked slightly.

“An auction, sir?”

“Yes,” he said. “A high-profile one. Important clients will be there.”

He paused briefly before continuing.

“You’ll be attending with me.”

Lucia’s eyes widened.

“Me?”

Kelvin nodded.

“As my assistant, you represent me outside the office as well.”

Lucia felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness rise within her.

“I understand, sir,” she said quickly.

“Good,” Kelvin replied. “Prepare everything—schedule, attire, details. I don’t tolerate mistakes.”

“I won’t disappoint you,” she said firmly.

Kelvin studied her for a moment, then gave a small nod.

“I know.”

The words were simple—but they carried weight.

Lucia stood and bowed her head slightly. “Thank you, Kel.”

As she left the office, her heart raced.

An auction.

A high-class event.

It was a world she had once belonged to… and was now stepping back into—but under completely different circumstances.

This time, she wasn’t the daughter of wealth.

She was an employee.

And she would prove she deserved to be there.

Meanwhile, miles away in Washington, Lucian sat comfortably on his bed, a tray of food resting on his lap.

Across from him, Martin lounged casually, scrolling through his phone.

“Hey,” Martin suddenly said, looking up. “There’s something I need to tell you.”

Lucian glanced at him. “What is it?”

Martin grinned.

“There’s an auction happening in New York next week.”

Lucian paused.

“An auction?”

“Yeah,” Martin said, sitting up slightly. “My dad’s going. Big event. Rich people, expensive items—you know the type.”

Lucian nodded slowly.

“And?” he asked.

Martin’s grin widened.

“He invited me.”

Lucian raised an eyebrow. “That’s good, isn’t it?”

“It is,” Martin said. “But there’s a small… situation.”

Lucian frowned slightly. “What kind of situation?”

Martin scratched the back of his head, looking almost embarrassed.

“I may have told him I’m dating someone.”

Silence.

Lucian blinked.

“You… what?”

“I panicked!” Martin said quickly. “He keeps asking about my love life, so I just said I had a boyfriend.”

Lucian stared at him.

“And now?” he asked cautiously.

Martin pointed at him.

“You’re coming with me.”

Lucian nearly choked.

“As your what?”

“My boyfriend,” Martin said casually.

Lucian immediately shook his head. “No.”

“Come on,” Martin insisted. “It’s just for the event. Act a little, smile a little—that’s it.”

“No,” Lucian repeated firmly. “I’m not doing that.”

Martin’s expression softened slightly.

“Lucian,” he said quietly, “I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important.”

Lucian hesitated.

“You’ve helped me a lot,” Martin continued. “You’ve been there for me. This is the first time I’m asking you for something.”

Those words hit differently.

Lucian looked down at his hands.

It was true.

Since they met, Martin had done nothing but support him—protect him, include him, treat him like family.

Refusing him now felt… wrong.

Lucian sighed softly.

“…Fine,” he said at last. “I’ll do it.”

Martin’s face lit up.

“Really?”

“Yes,” Lucian replied. “But only for this event.”

Martin jumped up excitedly. “You’re the best!”

Lucian shook his head slightly, a faint smile forming.

Then his expression changed.

“There’s one problem,” he said.

“What?”

“I don’t have anything to wear.”

Martin waved it off immediately.

“That’s easy,” he said. “Tomorrow—we go shopping.”

The next day, Lucian found himself in a world that felt strangely familiar—yet distant.

Luxury stores.

Designer outfits.

Polished displays.

Martin moved confidently, picking out clothes as if it were second nature.

“This one,” he said, holding up a suit. “Try it.”

Lucian hesitated. “It looks expensive.”

“It is,” Martin said simply. “And it’ll look perfect on you.”

Lucian sighed but took it.

One by one, he tried on outfits—sharp suits, stylish shoes, elegant accessories. At first, he felt uncomfortable.

Out of place.

But slowly… that feeling began to fade.

“You clean up well,” Martin said with a grin.

Lucian rolled his eyes slightly. “This is too much.”

“It’s just enough,” Martin corrected.

By the end of the day, they had everything they needed.

Suits.

Shoes.

Accessories.

Everything prepared for the event.

As they left the mall, Martin slung an arm over Lucian’s shoulder.

“Get ready,” he said. “This is going to be fun.”

Lucian looked ahead, his expression thoughtful.

“Yeah…” he murmured.

But deep inside, something felt… uncertain.

Back in New York, Lucia stood in front of her mirror once again—but this time, everything was different.

Elegant dresses hung neatly beside her.

Designer heels lined the floor.

Luxury bags rested on the table.

She reached out and touched one of the dresses softly.

“An auction…” she whispered.

A world of wealth.

Of power.

Of hidden intentions.

And soon…

She would be stepping into it again.

Unaware that, in that very same place—

Her path was about to cross with someone she never expected.

Her brother.

And when it did…

Nothing would ever be the same again.
