The evening sky had turned a soft shade of orange by the time they left the theme park. The laughter and noise slowly faded behind them, replaced by the sound of footsteps and distant traffic.
Aria walked slightly ahead again, holding her small bag close to her side. She still looked happy but now, her energy felt a little more subdued than before.
Behind her, Ethan and Mira followed.
And something about their distance had changed.
Not obvious.
Just… less connected.
They stopped at a small restaurant near the exit of the park. It wasn’t anything fancy, just a quiet place with warm lights and simple seating.
Aria sat down first, smiling. “I’m actually hungry now.”
Ethan sat across from her. “Same.”
Mira sat beside Ethan instead of across from Aria this time.
Aria noticed but didn’t say anything.
The waiter came, and they ordered.
For a few minutes, everything was normal again.
But silence started creeping in more often than before.
Aria tried to ignore it.
“So… did you guys have fun today?” she asked lightly.
Mira smiled quickly. “Yeah, it was nice.”
Ethan nodded. “It was okay.”
“Okay?” Aria tilted her head. “Just okay?”
Ethan paused. “I mean… yeah. It was good.”
Aria smiled faintly, but something in her expression softened slightly—just a little.
“Right,” she said gently. “Good.”
The food arrived, and they began eating.
Aria tried to keep the mood light.
She talked about small things customers at work, funny incidents, random thoughts from her day.
Mira responded occasionally.
Ethan mostly listened.
But not fully.
At one point, Aria laughed softly at something she said.
Ethan smiled… but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.
Aria noticed it.
Just for a second.
But she ignored it.
Mira leaned back in her chair, glancing at Ethan.
“You seem tired,” she said casually.
Ethan shook his head. “Just a long day.”
Mira nodded. “Yeah… I get that.”
There was a pause.
Then Mira added lightly, “Aria must be exhausting sometimes.”
Aria blinked. “What?”
Mira quickly smiled. “I mean emotionally. She’s very energetic.”
Aria laughed awkwardly. “Is that a bad thing?”
Ethan spoke before Mira could answer. “No. It’s not.”
But his tone was flat.
Not cold.
Just… distant.
After dinner, they walked out together.
Aria slowed down slightly, waiting for them to match her pace but they didn’t fully close the gap.
Ethan walked beside her, but not as close as before.
Mira walked on the other side, slightly between them at times.
It should have felt like a group walking together.
But Aria felt something else.
Like she was walking slightly ahead… alone.
She looked at Ethan.
“Are you okay?” she asked softly.
He turned to her. “Yeah. Why?”
“You just seem… quiet.”
Ethan paused for a second. “I’m fine.”
Aria nodded slowly. “Okay.”
But she didn’t feel fully convinced.
Mira stepped slightly closer to Ethan as Aria looked forward.
“You really are quiet today,” Mira said again, softer this time.
Ethan glanced at her briefly. “Not really.”
Mira smiled faintly. “You just think a lot, don’t you?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then: “Sometimes.”
Aria turned back again. “What are you two talking about?”
Mira instantly smiled. “Nothing. Just random stuff again.”
Ethan nodded once. “Yeah.”
Aria smiled back, trusting them like always.
But this time… she didn’t fully feel the same warmth she usually did.
Something had shifted.
She just didn’t know what yet.
They reached the street where they would part ways.
Aria stopped first.
“Today was fun,” she said, trying to sound cheerful again.
Mira smiled. “Yeah.”
Ethan nodded. “It was okay.”
That word again.
Okay.
Aria smiled anyway. “We should do this again sometime.”
“Sure,” Mira said quickly.
“Yeah,” Ethan added.
But there was a small pause before he said it.
Just a small one.
Aria waved slightly. “Bye then.”
They both waved back.
And Aria walked away alone.
