watch and see

The scenario was always the same: a ruined cityscape, the smell of blood and ash, and the oppressive weight of a Star Stream sub-scenario ticking down in the corner of their vision.

And, as always, Yoo Joonghyuk was trying to solve it by throwing himself into the jaws of death.

"Hey, sunfish bastard! Stop for a second!" Kim Dokja’s voice cut through the sound of collapsing concrete.

He scrambled over a pile of debris, his signature white coat fluttering like a broken wing.

Yoo Joonghyuk didn’t pause.

The Black Heavenly Demon Sword gleamed with dark, concentrated status, slicing through another wave of Outer God subordinates.

His face was a mask of cold, stubborn focus—the face of a man who had died a hundred times and expected to die a hundred more.

"Joonghyuk-ah!" Dokja caught up, grabbing the regressor by his armored shoulder.

"If you activate *Giant Body Transformation* right now, your probability will collapse. Did you forget the hidden condition of this stage?"

Joonghyuk finally stopped, twisting his head to glare at Dokja with eyes full of absolute exhaustion and sharp annoyance.

"Release me, Kim Dokja. If I do not clear the core within three minutes, the penalty will trigger."

"The penalty is a localized spatial collapse," Dokja said, his tone shifting into that calm, infuriatingly smug cadence he used whenever he knew something no one else did.

"You think you can tank it because of your regression. But if you die here, the world line splits, and this turn is a failure."

Dokja stepped in front of him, blocking his path.

He tapped his temples. "I've already read ahead. There’s a loophole. We just need to trick the Constellations watching the channel."

Joonghyuk’s jaw clenched.

He hated that look. He hated the way Dokja spoke as if the entire universe was just a script he had already skimmed through. Most of all, he hated that Dokja was usually right.

[The Constellation 'Demon-Like Judge of Fire' is biting her handkerchief in anticipation!]

[The Constellation 'Prisoner of the Golden Headband' is pulling his hair out!]

"What loophole?" Joonghyuk growled, his hand tightening on the hilt of his sword.

"The sub-scenario requires a 'sacrifice of equivalent status' to unlock the barrier," Dokja explained, holding up a small, shimmering crystal he had filched from a theater dungeon three scenarios ago.

"But the Star Stream judges status by narrative weight, not actual life force. If we fake a tragic betrayal, the system will accept the dramatic narrative and open the gate."

Joonghyuk stared at him. "A betrayal."

"Yeah. You know, your specialty," Dokja joked, though his smile didn't quite reach his eyes.

"Stab me. Just enough to trigger a 'Critical Injury' status. I’ll use *Bookmark* to mimic a death state, the barrier drops, you kill the boss, and we walk out."

"No."

The answer was immediate, dropped like a heavy stone between them.

Dokja blinked, caught off guard. "What do you mean, no? It’s completely safe. Well, mostly safe. Seventy percent safe."

"You always say that," Joonghyuk said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register. He took a step forward, towering over the reader. "You calculate percentages, you offer yourself up, and then you disappear. I am not participating in your theatrical suicide attempts anymore, Kim Dokja."

"It's not suicide, it's strategy—"

"It is a crutch," Joonghyuk snapped.

"You rely on your knowledge to throw your life away because you do not value it. You think because I regress, death has no meaning to me. But your deaths..."

He trailed off, the heavy silence of the ruined city filling the gap. Joonghyuk didn't finish the sentence, but the intense, burning anger in his eyes spoke volumes.

He was tired of watching the back of a white coat vanish into light fragments.

Dokja’s breath hitched. For all his vast knowledge of *Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World*, for all the millions of words he had memorized, he never quite knew what to do when the protagonist deviated from the script like this.

When Joonghyuk looked at him not like a tool to clear a scenario, but like a companion he desperately wanted to keep alive.

[The Constellation 'Demon-Like Judge of Fire' is squealing and dropping her glowing sword!]

[The Constellation 'Secretive Plotter' is looking at you with inscrutable eyes.]

"Joonghyuk-ah," Dokja said softly, dropping the arrogant facade. "The timer is at ninety seconds. If we don't do this, we both get caught in the collapse."

Joonghyuk let out a sharp, ragged breath. He sheathed the Black Heavenly Demon Sword with a lethal snap.

Before Dokja could ask what he was doing, Joonghyuk grabbed him by the lapels of his white coat and yanked him forward.

Not to stab him.

Joonghyuk closed the distance, his hand moving to the back of Dokja’s neck, gripping it firmly as he pulled the smaller man into a rough, desperate kiss.

It wasn't gentle. It tasted like dust, iron, and the sheer, stubborn will of a man fighting against the apocalypse.

It was a declaration—a violent demand for Dokja to stay rooted in reality, to stop looking at the world through a screen, and to realize he was actually here.

Dokja’s eyes widened in absolute shock.

His hands hovered in the air for a fraction of a second before instinctively grabbing onto Joonghyuk’s black coat for balance.

His heart hammered against his ribs, loud enough that he wondered if the system was registering it as a status effect.

When Joonghyuk finally pulled back, just an inch away, his dark eyes were fiercely focused on Dokja’s flushed face.

[A massive amount of Probability has been generated!]

[The Constellations of the 'Absolute Good' nebula are thrown into chaos!]

[The Star Stream has recognized an 'Unprecedented Narrative of Companionship'!]

A loud, crystalline shattering sound echoed through the square. The glowing barrier surrounding the scenario boss cracked, splintering into thousands of harmless shards, forced open by the sheer narrative weight of the moment.

Dokja stared, his lips parted, utterly speechless for the first time in his life. "You... what did you just do?"

Yoo Joonghyuk let go of his coat, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk touching the corner of his lips as he drew his sword once more.

"I created a narrative," Joonghyuk said, turning his back to Dokja and facing the now-vulnerable boss monster.

"Keep watching, Kim Dokja. Don't look away."

With a burst of dark energy, the regressor lunged forward into the fray.

Behind him, Dokja covered his face with a trembling hand, his face burning red as the system messages continued to spam his vision.

For once, the reader had absolutely nothing to say.....
