The Weight of a Name

Maria Cecilia's POV

I never liked drawing attention to myself.

For a long time, being invisible was how I survived. At the orphanage, anyone who stood out too much got punished. Anyone who questioned things suffered. So I learned to hide, to speak little, to take up as little space as possible.

But that night... there was no hiding.

Four years had passed.

Four years since I'd walked into that college terrified of breathing too loudly. Four years since I'd met Ana Paula — who talked enough for us both — and Luna, who'd burst into our lives like an elegant hurricane impossible to ignore.

Luna Salvatore, 24 years old

And now here we were.

Graduates.

Me, Maria Cecilia Santana. Twenty-four years old. Business Administration degree.

It still felt strange to think about.

"Hurry up, Cecilia! You haven't even finished your hair!"

Ana Paula's voice echoed from the bedroom, pulling a smile from me.

"I'm coming!"

When I reached the living room, I had to stop for a second.

Luna was at the center of everything, as always. Hairdressers, makeup artists, clothes scattered everywhere, expensive perfume in the air... it looked like a scene from a movie. All organized by her, of course.

"This is overkill, Lu," I said, crossing my arms, trying to look firm.

She shot me an indignant look.

"Overkill? You call this overkill? It's our graduation!"

"Ours, no. Yours," Ana Paula said, flopping onto the couch. "I'd never pay for all this."

Luna rolled her eyes but smiled.

"Good thing you don't have to."

Before I could protest again, one of the makeup artists gently pulled me by the hand.

"Sit here, gorgeous."

Gorgeous.

I still didn't quite know how to handle that kind of word.

While she worked on my face, I watched myself in the mirror. I wasn't the girl who'd been too thin anymore, with that exhausted look and constant fear.

My hair was better taken care of, my skin no longer carried so much fatigue, and my eyes...

My eyes still held history.

But now they also held life.

"Done."

When I stood up, I barely recognized myself.

The dress Luna had given me was simple compared to hers, but it was still the most beautiful thing I'd ever worn. It fell perfectly on my body, as if it had been made for me.

"Oh my God." Ana Paula put her hand over her heart. "Who are you, and what have you done with my best friend?"

I laughed.

"Stop."

Luna looked me up and down with a satisfied smile.

"I told you — you need to let yourself go more."

Maybe she was right.

Maybe, for the first time, I really was letting myself.

The ballroom was lit in an almost magical way.

Golden lights, loud music, people laughing, families taking photos... everything seemed to vibrate with a collective happiness I'd never experienced before.

It was strange.

But it was good.

Really good.

"I'm going to get something to drink," Ana Paula said, already walking away.

"I'll come with you," I replied.

"No, you won't." Luna grabbed my arm.

I looked at her.

That was when I noticed.

She was... nervous.

"Lu... what's wrong?" I asked, moving a little closer.

She took a deep breath, as if trying to hold herself together.

"My parents... and my brothers said they were coming."

"And that's bad?"

She let out a weak laugh.

"You don't understand..."

I frowned.

"Then explain it to me."

For a second, Luna looked away. This wasn't the confident Luna we knew.

This was a different version of her.

More vulnerable.

"I'm afraid they'll do something... to embarrass me."

Before I could respond, Ana Paula appeared at our side with two drinks in hand.

"Girl, relax," she said, handing one to Luna. "That's what family's for. Embarrassing us."

I couldn't hold back a laugh.

Luna laughed too, even though she was still tense.

"You're terrible, Ana."

"I know. But I'm right."

The music got louder, the lights swirled, and for a moment everything went back to normal. We talked, laughed, danced a little... and I almost forgot that the night also carried expectations.

Until the moment arrived.

"Ladies and gentlemen, may we have your attention..."

The dean's voice echoed through the ballroom, and the noise gradually died down.

My heart raced.

This was real.

This was now.

"Today we celebrate not just the end of a chapter, but the beginning of many more..."

While he spoke, my hands started to sweat.

Ana Paula held one of them.

"Hey," she whispered. "We did it."

I looked at her.

And smiled.

"We did."

"This special event is being sponsored by the Salvatore family..."

I didn't pay much attention at first.

Until Luna went completely rigid beside me.

"...and the diplomas will be presented by Paolo Salvatore, CEO of Salvatore Industries."

I slowly turned to look at her.

"Lu..."

She leaned in slightly, speaking low:

"My family."

I blinked.

"What?"

"They insisted on presenting the diplomas."

Before I could say anything, the first names started being called.

One by one.

Applause.

Smiles.

Photos.

I watched it all as if I were outside my own body.

Until I heard:

"Ana Paula..."

I practically pushed her forward.

"Go!"

She came back minutes later, eyes shining.

"I'm going to cry," she said, laughing.

"Don't cry."

"I'm going to cry, I swear."

Then...

"Maria Cecilia Santana."

The world went silent.

Or at least that's how it felt.

I walked.

One step at a time.

Breathe.

Don't trip.

Don't fall.

Don't ruin this.

When I climbed onto the stage, it was the first time I looked directly at him.

Paolo Salvatore.

Tall. Impeccable posture. A perfectly tailored suit. The kind of presence that made the room feel smaller around him.

His eyes found mine.

And something... strange happened.

A shiver ran through my entire body.

Strong.

Sudden.

Inexplicable.

I'd never felt anything like it before.

Not even close.

For a second, I hesitated.

But I kept walking.

He held out the diploma.

I reached for it.

When our fingers touched...

The shiver came back.

More intense.

As if something inside me had been awakened.

I pulled my hand back quickly, trying to play it off.

"Congratulations," he said.

His voice was firm, controlled... but there was something there.

Something I couldn't identify.

"Thank you," I answered, quieter than I would've liked.

For a brief instant, our eyes locked.

Too long.

Too intense.

Too uncomfortable.

Or... not.

I came down from the stage with my heart pounding.

"So?" Ana Paula practically jumped on me. "How was it?"

"Normal," I lied.

"Normal, my ass." Luna watched me closely. "You're acting weird."

"No, I'm not."

But I was.

Because deep down, I knew.

That hadn't been normal.

And I had the feeling that moment...

Was only the beginning of something much bigger.

Something I couldn't yet understand.

But that had somehow already started to change everything.
