Broken Memories – Chapter 2: The Girl in the Darkness
Rain poured heavily over Sakura High School as thunder shook the old building. Inside the abandoned music room, the air felt cold and heavy. The lights flickered above Aira Mizuno and Ren Kuroi while both stared at the dark figure standing near the window.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The shadow slowly stepped forward.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Lightning flashed across the room, revealing the face of a pale girl with long black hair. Around her neck hung a broken silver necklace.
Aira’s eyes widened in fear.
The necklace looked exactly like the one from her memories.
“You…” Aira whispered softly.
The mysterious girl smiled faintly.
“Do you finally remember me?”
Ren immediately stepped in front of Aira protectively.
“Stay back,” he said coldly.
The girl looked at him with calm eyes.
“You still protect her after everything that happened?”
Aira looked between them nervously.
“What are you talking about?” she asked. “Who are you?”
The girl tilted her head slightly.
“My name is Yuna Hoshino,” she answered quietly. “I used to be your best friend.”
The words hit Aira like thunder.
Best friend?
Aira searched desperately through her memories, but she could not remember Yuna at all.
“That’s impossible,” Aira whispered. “I would remember someone important like you…”
Yuna’s smile slowly disappeared.
“That’s what hurts the most,” she said softly. “You forgot me completely.”
The room suddenly became colder.
The windows rattled as wind pushed against the building outside.
Aira felt her chest tighten painfully. Small pieces of memory began flashing through her mind.
A classroom filled with laughter.
A school festival decorated with colorful lights.
Yuna smiling while wearing the silver necklace.
Then suddenly—
A scream.
Darkness.
Someone crying.
A rooftop door slamming shut.
Aira grabbed her head as pain shot through her mind.
“Stop…” she whispered.
More memories appeared.
Yuna standing alone in the rain.
Aira walking away from her.
A hand reaching out desperately.
“STOP!” Aira shouted.
Ren quickly held her shoulders.
“Aira! Calm down!”
But the memories continued attacking her mind like broken pieces of glass.
Yuna stared silently at her.
“You promised you would never leave me alone,” she said quietly.
A crack echoed through the room.
One of the old mirrors on the wall suddenly shattered.
Aira screamed and stepped backward.
Inside the broken mirror, she saw another strange image.
Yuna crying on the school rooftop at night.
And beside her—
Ren.
Aira looked up immediately.
“Ren… you were there too?”
Ren’s expression darkened.
Before he could answer, Yuna laughed softly.
“Of course he was,” she said. “He knows the truth better than anyone.”
Thunder roared outside again.
The lights flickered violently.
Aira looked at Ren desperately.
“What truth?” she asked. “Tell me what happened three years ago!”
Ren stayed silent for several seconds.
Then he finally spoke.
“Three years ago, after the school festival, Yuna disappeared.”
Aira froze.
“The police searched for weeks,” Ren continued quietly. “But nobody found her.”
Yuna slowly looked toward the window.
“That’s because nobody searched for the real truth,” she whispered.
Rainwater slid down the glass behind her like tears.
Aira’s breathing became shaky.
“Why can’t I remember any of this?”
Yuna turned back toward her.
“Because you forced yourself to forget.”
The words sent fear through Aira’s body.
“No… that’s not true…”
But deep inside, something felt terribly wrong.
Why did these memories feel so painful?
Why did seeing Yuna make her heart ache?
Yuna slowly walked closer.
“Aira,” she said softly, “do you remember what you said to me on the rooftop?”
Aira shook her head weakly.
Yuna’s pale eyes looked filled with sadness.
“You said…” she whispered, “‘I never want to see you again.’”
Aira’s face turned pale.
“No… I would never say that…”
But another memory flashed suddenly.
The rooftop.
Heavy rain.
A terrible argument.
Yuna crying.
And Aira shouting something angrily.
Aira stumbled backward.
Ren caught her before she fell.
“That memory isn’t complete,” Ren said quickly. “Don’t force yourself to remember everything at once.”
Yuna looked at him sharply.
“You’re still hiding the truth.”
Ren’s eyes narrowed.
“I’m protecting her.”
“From what?” Aira cried.
Neither of them answered.
Silence filled the room again.
Then Yuna slowly stepped toward the classroom door.
“When the clock reaches midnight tomorrow,” she said quietly, “come to the rooftop.”
She looked directly at Aira.
“That’s where everything began.”
The lights suddenly turned off.
Darkness swallowed the room completely.
A cold wind rushed past them.
Aira covered her eyes instinctively.
Then—
silence.
A few seconds later, the lights flickered back on.
Yuna was gone.
Only the broken necklace remained on the wooden floor.
Aira slowly picked it up with trembling hands.
The moment her fingers touched it, one final memory appeared in her mind.
Yuna smiling sadly while saying:
> “If you forget me… I’ll come back.”
Aira’s heart pounded heavily.
Outside, thunder echoed across the night sky once more.
And somewhere in the darkness of the school hallway—
someone was watching them.
