🌙 CHAPTER 1 — “Room 403 Agreement”
The dormitory hallway smelled faintly of clean detergent and summer humidity.
Room 403 was at the end.
The last room.
The quiet one.
Or at least—it was supposed to be.
Ren Kisaragi stood in front of the door longer than necessary.
His hand hovered near the handle.
Then dropped.
Then hovered again.
Behind him, the dorm supervisor cleared his throat.
“You’ll be sharing this room starting this semester.”
Ren didn’t respond immediately.
“…I understand.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Like he was trying to convince himself more than anyone else.
The door slid open.
And that was when Haruki Amamiya looked up.
White hair slightly messy.
A half-folded shirt in his hands.
And a smile so bright it looked completely out of place in a shared dorm room.
“Oh—new roommate?”
His tone was light.
Friendly.
Almost too friendly.
Ren stared for exactly two seconds longer than socially acceptable.
Then stepped inside.
“…Yes.”
That was all.
Haruki blinked.
Then smiled wider.
“Nice to meet you!”
He bowed slightly.
Too casually.
Too energetically.
“I’m Haruki Amamiya. Second-year.”
Pause.
Then, with a playful tilt of his head:
“So… are you gonna do anything weird in here?”
Ren froze.
“…What.”
Haruki laughed.
“I mean like—bringing strangers in at night, loud music, illegal pet reptiles, that kind of thing.”
Ren looked at him like he was mentally unstable.
“I will not.”
“Good,” Haruki said instantly. “Me neither.”
A silence settled.
Not uncomfortable.
Just unfamiliar.
Ren placed his bag down neatly.
Organized.
Precise.
Haruki watched him.
Then said casually:
“I like quiet roommates.”
Ren didn’t respond.
Haruki leaned slightly closer.
“…You’re quiet, aren’t you?”
Ren finally looked at him directly.
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“…Good.”
Haruki smiled again.
Like he had just decided something.
The Privacy Promise
That evening, Haruki suddenly pulled out his phone.
“Hey.”
Ren looked up.
“…What.”
Haruki grinned.
“Let’s make a rule.”
He pointed the camera between them.
“A privacy promise video.”
Ren frowned immediately.
“I do not want to be recorded.”
“Relax, it’s just for us.”
“That is what people say before disasters.”
Haruki laughed.
“I swear I won’t post it.”
Ren stared at him for a long moment.
Then sighed.
“…Fine.”
The camera started recording.
Haruki leaned in.
“Room 403 agreement!”
Ren looked deeply unamused.
Haruki continued:
“We respect each other’s privacy.”
Ren nodded slightly.
“No unnecessary interference.”
“Yes!” Haruki said.
A pause.
Then softer:
“…And no falling in love with each other.”
Ren froze.
“…That was unnecessary.”
Haruki laughed loudly.
“I’m joking, I’m joking.”
But neither of them smiled at the same time.
The video ended.
Haruki stretched.
“Alright. Welcome home, roommate.”
Ren looked at him for a long moment.
Then quietly:
“…Thank you.”
Haruki blinked.
Then smiled slightly softer than before.
“Yeah. Anytime.”
That night, neither of them realized—
this was the beginning of something neither privacy rules nor promises would survive.
