🌙 CHAPTER 5 — “The Lipstick That Wasn’t the Problem”
Room 403 didn’t change.
But the air inside it did.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just slightly colder in places where warmth used to happen automatically.
The Silence Phase
Ren stopped talking first.
Not completely.
Just less.
Shorter answers.
Fewer questions.
More time spent looking away when Haruki spoke.
Haruki noticed.
Of course he did.
But he didn’t understand it.
And that was the problem.
“…Ren,” Haruki said one evening, “did I do something wrong?”
Ren didn’t look up from his notes.
“No.”
Immediate answer.
Too immediate.
Haruki frowned.
“That was suspiciously fast.”
Ren turned a page.
“…It is the truth.”
Silence.
Haruki stared at him.
Then leaned back.
“…Okay.”
But he didn’t believe it.
What Haruki Doesn’t Know
Ren does not understand jealousy.
He understands logic.
He understands structure.
He understands control.
Jealousy does not fit anywhere in his system.
So he labels it incorrectly.
As discomfort.
As irritation.
As confusion.
But it keeps returning.
Especially when Haruki smiles at other people.
Especially when Haruki is touched casually.
Especially when Haruki doesn’t immediately come back to him afterward.
And Ren hates that he notices.
Haruki Tries (Badly)
One night, Haruki brings snacks into Room 403.
He places them beside Ren.
“…You didn’t eat dinner properly.”
Ren glances at them.
“…I did.”
Haruki narrows his eyes.
“You had coffee and stress.”
“That is a meal for some people.”
“It is not.”
Silence.
Then Haruki sits beside him.
Careful.
Soft voice.
“…Are you mad at me?”
Ren pauses.
Then quietly:
“No.”
Haruki sighs.
“…You’re lying again.”
Ren closes his book.
For a moment, he looks tired.
“…I am not angry.”
A pause.
Then:
“…I am just trying to understand something.”
Haruki softens slightly.
“…What.”
Ren hesitates.
Then—
“…It is nothing important.”
And that ends the conversation.
The Problem Gets Worse
The agency keeps pushing appearances.
More filming.
More staged interactions.
More public “couple behavior.”
Haruki complies.
Because he thinks:
this protects Ren.
But what he doesn’t realize is:
Ren is watching all of it without understanding the rules.
So when Haruki laughs with someone else during filming…
Ren feels something tighten in his chest.
When Haruki leans in for “natural chemistry” shots…
Ren looks away faster than usual.
And Haruki notices that too.
But interprets it wrong.
The Lipstick Memory (Reframed)
It keeps coming back to Ren.
Not the mark itself.
But the feeling.
That sudden instinct to leave.
To remove himself.
To escape something he didn’t understand.
That bothers him more than he admits.
Because Ren doesn’t run from things easily.
Except—
apparently—
from Haruki.
Haruki Finally Breaks First
One night, Haruki comes home later than usual.
Ren is already in the room.
Waiting.
Not visibly.
But present in a way Haruki immediately notices.
“…Hey,” Haruki says quietly.
Ren looks up.
“…You are late.”
Haruki smiles weakly.
“Work.”
Ren nods.
“…I see.”
Silence.
Haruki sits on his bed.
Then exhales.
“…Can we talk.”
Ren pauses.
Then closes his notebook.
“…About what.”
Haruki looks at him.
Long.
Careful.
Then:
“…About you.”
Ren stiffens slightly.
“…There is nothing to discuss.”
Haruki shakes his head.
“No. There is.”
Silence.
Haruki leans forward.
“…Ever since the café thing, you’ve been different.”
Ren doesn’t respond.
So Haruki continues.
“Did I make you uncomfortable?”
Ren’s eyes flicker.
“…No.”
Too fast again.
Haruki sighs.
“…Ren.”
Soft now.
Not playful.
Not idol.
Just him.
“…You can tell me.”
Ren looks at him for a long time.
Then quietly:
“…It was not discomfort.”
Haruki freezes slightly.
“…Then what was it.”
Ren hesitates.
Like the word doesn’t exist in his vocabulary.
Then finally:
“…I did not like it.”
Haruki blinks.
“…What part.”
Ren’s hands tighten slightly on his lap.
“…The lipstick.”
Haruki pauses.
Then realization slowly settles.
“Oh.”
A beat.
Then softer:
“…You mean you were jealous.”
Ren immediately frowns.
“…No.”
Haruki tilts his head.
“…That sounded like jealousy.”
“It is not jealousy.”
“Okay.”
A pause.
Haruki leans back slightly.
“…Then what is it?”
Silence.
Ren struggles.
Clearly.
Because he doesn’t have the word.
Finally:
“…It felt like you were not… mine in that moment.”
The room stops.
Not dramatically.
But completely.
Haruki stares at him.
Slowly.
Processing.
Then, softly:
“…Ren.”
Ren looks up.
Haruki exhales.
Almost smiling.
“…That is jealousy.”
Ren freezes.
“…That is not logical.”
Haruki laughs once.
“Yeah. It rarely is.”
The Emotional Crack
Ren looks confused now.
Genuinely.
“…I do not understand why I felt that.”
Haruki’s expression softens.
He shifts slightly closer.
Careful.
Not forcing.
“…Because you care about me,” Haruki says gently.
Ren looks down.
“…That is inconvenient.”
Haruki laughs softly.
“Yeah. It kind of is.”
Silence again.
But lighter this time.
Less sharp.
Then Haruki says something quieter.
“…For the record.”
Ren looks up slightly.
Haruki smiles.
“…I wasn’t anyone’s in that moment.”
Pause.
Then softer:
“…I’m yours when I’m with you.”
Ren’s breath catches slightly.
But he doesn’t respond.
He doesn’t know how.
Ending Scene
That night, Ren doesn’t sleep quickly.
And Haruki doesn’t either.
But for the first time since the misunderstanding—
Room 403 doesn’t feel cold.
Just uncertain.
Like something is finally being understood… slowly.
And neither of them realizes yet—
this is the beginning of love becoming conscious.
