The Near Miss

The following days were a blur of caffeine and spreadsheets for Anu. The collaboration with the Malhotra Empire wasn’t something that could be finished in a day. It required perfection. Between her long hours at the office and Arjun's silent intensity at his own, the week finally bled into the weekend.

Anu hadn't forgotten her promise.

"Amusement Park! Amusement Park!" Manu chanted, jumping on the sofa.

Anu laughed, grabbing her bag. "Okay, okay! We’re going. Chaitra, are you ready?"

"Ready as I'll ever be to deal with a hyperactive kid and a thousand screaming people," Chaitra joked as they headed out.

At the Same Time... The Malhotra Mansion

The atmosphere in the mansion was less cheerful. Iha had been restless all these days, her little eyes constantly searching the hallways.

"Mama... Mama..." she whimpered, pushing away her toys.

Isha watched her niece with a heavy heart. She knew Arjun was growing increasingly frustrated with Iha’s fixation on a stranger. "Iha baby, look at me," Isha said, trying to sound bright. "How about we go to the amusement park? We can get cotton candy and ride the carousel!"

It took some convincing, but eventually, Iha’s curiosity won.

The City Amusement Park

The park was a kaleidoscope of colors, loud music, and the smell of popcorn. Anu, Chaitra, and Manu were having the time of their lives. For a moment, the stress of the presentation and the haunting memory of the hospital baby faded from Anu’s mind.

Across the park, Isha was struggling. She was holding Iha’s hand tightly, navigating through the thick crowd.

"Stay right here, Iha. Don't move. Auntie is just getting you that pink candy you wanted," Isha said, pointing to the stall just two feet away.

But as Isha turned her back to pay, Iha saw something. A familiar figure. A silhouette that made her little heart skip a beat.

"Mama!" Iha squealed, though her voice was lost in the roar of a nearby roller coaster.

Without thinking, the toddler let go of the railing and started waddling as fast as her small legs could carry her, weaving through the legs of strangers, following the woman in the floral dress.

When Isha turned around, the candy in her hand hit the floor.

"Iha?" Isha’s voice went shrill. "Iha! Where are you?!"

Panic, cold and sharp, washed over her. She pushed through people, screaming Iha’s name, but the child was nowhere to be seen. Her hands trembling, she dialed the one person she feared and relied on most.

"B-brother..." Isha sobbed into the phone the moment he picked up. "I lost her. Iha is gone."

The silence on the other end was more terrifying than any shout.

"I'm coming," Arjun’s voice was like ice. "Do not move from that spot."

Near the Fountain

Iha was lost. The world suddenly felt too big, and the people too tall. Her bottom lip began to tremble, and fat tears gathered in her eyes. Just as she was about to let out a loud cry, a pair of gentle hands scooped her up.

"Hey, hey... what happened, little angel? Why are you all alone?"

Iha looked up. The crying stopped instantly. A bright, watery smile broke across her face. "Mama!"

Anu felt a shock go through her system. It was her. The baby from the hospital. "Oh my god, it’s you! How did you get here? Where is your family?"

Anu sat on a nearby bench, holding Iha close, soothing her until the child’s breathing became regular.

"Iha!"

Anu looked up to see a young woman running toward them, looking like she was about to collapse from a heart attack.

"Oh, thank God!" Isha cried, grabbing Iha from Anu’s arms and hugging her tight. "I thought... I thought I'd lost her forever."

Isha looked at Anu, her eyes wide with recognition. "You... you’re the girl from the hospital."

Anu smiled gently. "She was wandering near the fountain. You should be more careful; it’s very crowded today."

They spent a few minutes talking, Iha refusing to let go of Anu’s hand. But eventually, Chaitra called out to Anu, signaling that it was time to meet Manu at the gates.

"I have to go," Anu said softly, leaning down to kiss Iha’s forehead. "Be a good girl for your auntie, okay? Maybe we’ll meet again."

The Exit Gates

Just as Anu stepped toward the taxi stand, a black SUV screeched to a halt near the entrance. The door flung open, and Arjun Malhotra stepped out, looking like a dark cloud of fury.

Isha ran toward him, still holding Iha. "Brother! She’s okay, someone found her!"

Arjun didn't say a word; he just snatched his daughter into a crushing hug, his heart finally slowing down.

Iha patted Arjun’s cheek, then pointed a small finger toward the line of departing cabs. "Dada! Mama! Look, Mama!"

Arjun’s head snapped in the direction Iha was pointing.

At that exact second, a woman was sliding into the back seat of a yellow taxi. He only saw the curve of her shoulder and a cascade of dark hair before the door slammed shut.

The taxi pulled away, merging into the sea of traffic.

Arjun stared at the retreating car, a strange, inexplicable feeling tugging at his soul. He didn't see her face, but for the first time in his life, Arjun felt like something important had just slipped through his fingers.

The ride back to the Malhotra Mansion was heavy with Arjun’s silence. He sat in the backseat, holding Iha so tightly it was as if he were afraid she would evaporate into thin air. Isha sat beside them, staring out the window, her heart still racing from the terror of nearly losing her niece.

Malhotra Mansion

The moment they stepped through the front doors, the entire family rushed to the foyer. News of the incident had reached them already.

"Iha! My baby!" Bhuvaneswari cried, her face pale with worry. Srujana and Dharmender were right behind her, their eyes searching the child for any signs of injury.

"Is she okay? Did she get hurt? Did she cry a lot?" Srujana asked frantically, checking Iha’s small arms and legs for any bruises.

But Iha didn't look like a child who had just been lost in a crowd. Her eyes were bright, and a wide, joyful smile stretched across her face. She started bouncing in Arjun’s arms, her excitement bubbling over.

"Mama! Mama!" Iha chirped, clapping her tiny hands.

The family froze. They looked at each other, then at Isha, their expressions filled with confusion.

"Isha, what is she saying? Who is she talking about?" Dharmender asked.

Isha took a deep breath and explained the miracle at the amusement park—how Iha had wandered off and was found, yet again, by the same mysterious girl from the hospital.

As the family pulled Iha into a collective hug, relieved she was safe, Iha suddenly leaned back and looked at them all with a very serious, happy expression.

"Iha... love... Mama!" she declared clearly.

The room went deathly silent. It wasn't just a word anymore. It was her very first complete sentence. And she had used it to profess her love for a stranger.

Arjun’s head snapped toward Isha, his eyes narrowing into sharp, icy slits. The intensity of his gaze made Isha flinch. How could a stranger have this much influence over my daughter in just two meetings? he thought, his jaw clenching so hard it pained him.

Isha shook her head quickly, her hands up in a silent "I don't know" gesture.

What Isha didn't tell them—because she hadn't fully processed it herself—was what she had overheard before reaching the fountain. She remembered seeing the girl whispering to Iha, tickling her tummy, and saying with a beautiful, genuine smile, "Mama loves Iha."

The little girl had tucked those words deep into her heart, and now, they were the only words that mattered to her.

Night

Dinner that night was a quiet affair. The mystery of the "Mama" figure hung over the table like a thick fog. No one dared to bring it up, especially not with the dark cloud hanging over Arjun’s face.

After dinner, the family retreated to their rooms. Arjun lay in the dark, watching Iha sleep peacefully beside him. She looked so innocent, so content.

"Iha love Mama..."

The sentence echoed in his mind, over and over. He didn't know her name. He didn't know her face. But he knew one thing: this woman was now a part of his daughter's soul, and he wouldn't rest until he found out why.
