“The Night the City Held Its Breath

The window was open.

Cold night air drifted into the apartment, carrying the faint scent of rain. Aiko Tanaka rushed forward, her heart hammering harder than any battle she’d ever fought. She scanned the fire escape, the alley below, the rooftops across the street.

Nothing.

No intruder.

No drone.

No sign of forced entry.

But the open window meant one thing:

Specter had been here.

Aiko’s breath tightened. She turned back to Riku, who was now fully awake, rubbing his eyes.

“Aiko… what’s going on?”

She forced her voice to stay calm. “Did you open the window?”

Riku shook his head. “No. I was asleep the whole time.”

Aiko’s stomach dropped.

He was inside this room while you slept. He could’ve taken Riku. He could’ve killed him.

Her fingers curled into fists.

Riku stood, worry creasing his brow. “Aiko… you’re shaking.”

She hadn’t realized she was.

“I’m fine,” she whispered. “Just… startled.”

But Riku stepped closer, placing a gentle hand on her arm. “Aiko, talk to me. Something’s wrong.”

She looked into his eyes—warm, trusting, completely unaware of the world she fought in.

And she couldn’t tell him.

Not yet.

Not until she knew how deep Specter’s reach went.

Aiko exhaled slowly. “I’ll explain soon. I promise.”

Riku nodded, though confusion lingered. “Okay. I trust you.”

Those words hit her harder than any blade.

---

The Hidden Message

Aiko closed the window and locked it. As she did, she noticed something small wedged into the frame—a thin metal chip, no bigger than a fingernail.

Her pulse sharpened.

A message.

She activated it with a tap.

A holographic symbol flickered to life: a mask with glowing red eyes.

Specter’s voice whispered through the room:

> “You’re too slow, Shadow Princess.”

Aiko’s jaw clenched.

> “If I wanted your husband, he froze. “Husband…?”

Aiko quickly closed her hand around the chip, crushing it. “It’s nothing. Just a prank.”

But Riku wasn’t convinced. “Aiko… who was that?”

She swallowed. “Someone dangerous.”

Riku’s eyes widened. “Are we in danger?”

Aiko hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

---

Aiko’s Decision

She couldn’t hide it anymore. Not when Specter had crossed the line.

“Riku,” she said softly, “there are things about me you don’t know.”

He blinked. “Like what?”

Aiko took a breath.

“I’m not just your wife.”

Riku laughed nervously. “Well, yeah, I figured that—”

“I’m an assassin.”

Silence.

Riku stared at her, stunned. “Aiko… that’s not funny.”

“I’m not joking.”

She held up her hairpin. With a flick, it unfolded into a razor‑thin blade.

Riku’s eyes widened. “What—how—”

“I’ve been trained since childhood. I’ve taken down criminal networks, warlords, mercenaries. People fear me. They call me the Shadow Princess.”

Riku sat down slowly, processing.

“So… all those times you caught things… and dodged things… and the guy who fainted behind me…”

Aiko nodded. “I’ve been protecting you.”

Riku rubbed his face. “Wow. Okay. This is… a lot.”

Aiko knelt in front of him, her voice trembling. “I didn’t want this life to touch you. I wanted to keep you safe. But now someone is targeting us. Someone named Specter.”

Riku looked at her—really looked at her.

And instead of fear, she saw something else in his eyes.

Determination.

“Aiko… you don’t have to protect me alone.”

She blinked. “Riku—”

“I’m not a fighter. I know that. But I’m your husband. And I’m not going to sit here while someone threatens you.”

Aiko felt her chest tighten. “I don’t want you hurt.”

“And I don’t want you carrying this alone.”

For a moment, the world softened.

Then—

A loud crash echoed from the hallway.

Aiko snapped to her feet, blade ready.

Riku jumped. “What was that?”

Aiko moved to the door, senses sharp.

Another crash.

Then a metallic screech.

Aiko’s eyes widened.

Drones.

---

The Attack Begins

The apartment door buckled inward as something slammed into it from the other side. Aiko grabbed Riku’s hand.

“Get behind me.”

The door burst open.

Three spider‑like drones crawled into the apartment, red lights glowing like eyes. Their metal legs clattered against the floor, and their built‑in blades whirred to life.

Riku gasped. “What are those?!”

“Specter’s toys,” Aiko said, stepping forward.

One drone lunged.

Aiko sliced through it in a single motion, sparks flying.

Another leapt toward Riku.

Aiko moved faster than thought—grabbing Riku, spinning him behind her, and kicking the drone into the wall.

The third drone climbed onto the ceiling, aiming a laser sight at Riku’s chest.

Aiko’s heart stopped.

She threw her blade.

It hit dead center.

The drone exploded in a shower of sparks.

Riku stared at her, breathless. “Aiko… you’re incredible.”

She didn’t smile.

Because she knew this was only the beginning.

Closing Scene — Specter Watches

Far away, in a dark room filled with screens, Specter watched the drone feed cut out.

He leaned back in his chair.

“So,” he murmured, “the Shadow Princess still has her edge.”

He tapped a key.

A new image appeared on the screen:

Riku Tanaka.

Specter’s voice lowered.

“Let’s see how sharp she stays… when the one she loves is on the line.”
