Too Close To Danger

Morning sunlight slowly slipped through the giant glass windows of the mansion.

Elena woke up slowly, confused for a second by the soft king-sized bed beneath her.

Then she remembered everything.

The hotel.

The gunshots.

Damien Moretti.

Her chest tightened instantly.

She sat up quickly, running a hand through her messy hair before noticing fresh clothes folded neatly on the chair nearby.

A black note rested on top.

> Wear this.

— D

Elena stared at the note.

“Bossy,” she muttered under her breath.

Still, she changed into the expensive black outfit anyway because her dress from last night was ruined.

After fixing her hair quickly, she carefully opened the bedroom door and stepped into the quiet hallway.

The mansion felt strangely calm during daylight.

Too calm.

As Elena walked downstairs, she noticed guards standing near almost every entrance.

Nobody smiled.

Nobody spoke.

It felt less like a home and more like a fortress.

The smell of coffee finally led her into a massive dining room.

Damien sat alone at the long table, casually drinking coffee while reading something on his phone.

He looked unfairly attractive this early in the morning.

His black shirt sleeves were rolled up again, revealing the tattoos along his arm.

Elena quickly looked away.

“Sleep well?” Damien asked without looking up.

She frowned slightly. “How did you know I was here?”

“I heard your footsteps.”

That answer somehow made him even scarier.

Elena sat across from him carefully.

“You have guards everywhere, giant gates, and apparently super hearing. Is there anything normal about you?”

A faint smirk touched his lips.

“No.”

A maid placed breakfast in front of Elena nervously before leaving quickly.

Elena noticed how everyone around Damien acted carefully.

Like they were afraid of upsetting him.

“Do people always act terrified around you?” she asked.

Damien finally looked up from his phone.

“They should.”

The calmness in his voice made chills run down her spine.

Before Elena could answer, another man suddenly entered the dining room.

Tall.

Sharp suit.

Cold expression.

His eyes immediately landed on Elena.

“And who’s this?” he asked.

“Elena,” Damien replied calmly.

The man raised an eyebrow slightly. “You brought a girl here?”

Damien’s expression darkened slightly.

“Problem, Luca?”

Luca leaned against the doorway with crossed arms.

“No. I’m just surprised you’re suddenly playing bodyguard.”

Elena looked between them awkwardly.

Clearly there was tension.

Luca suddenly looked directly at her.

“You should leave while you still can.”

The room instantly went silent.

Damien slowly placed his coffee cup down.

“That’s enough.”

Even Luca noticed the warning in Damien’s voice.

But Elena’s curiosity grew stronger.

“Why would he say that?” she asked quietly.

Damien’s jaw tightened slightly.

“Because this world is dangerous.”

“And yet you dragged me into it.”

For the first time, Damien looked slightly annoyed.

“You were already in danger.”

“That doesn’t explain anything!”

Her voice echoed slightly through the dining room.

The guards nearby looked nervous immediately.

But Damien stayed calm.

Too calm.

Finally, he stood up slowly and walked toward her.

Elena’s heartbeat immediately quickened.

Every time he got close, she forgot how to breathe properly.

“You want answers?” he asked quietly.

“Yes.”

Damien stopped directly in front of her.

“So listen carefully.”

His dark eyes locked onto hers intensely.

“The people who attacked the hotel last night weren’t random enemies.”

Elena swallowed nervously.

“They were looking for me.”

A cold feeling settled in her chest.

“And now,” Damien continued softly, “they know you were with me.”

Silence filled the room.

Elena stared at him in disbelief.

“What…?”

“You’re involved now.”

Fear flashed across her face instantly.

“No. No, I’m not part of your mafia problems.”

Damien stepped even closer.

“You became part of it the second I touched you in that ballroom.”

The words hit harder than they should have.

Elena’s heart pounded wildly.

This wasn’t normal.

Nothing about Damien Moretti was normal.

And somehow—

that made him impossible to stay away from.
