Something That Doesn't Stop

E desse

The night felt heavier than the previous ones, not because of the weather but because of the silence that followed it. The city lights reflected on wet streets that no longer had rain falling on them, only the memory of it remaining in the reflections. Seoha stayed in her room longer than usual after returning home, sitting on the edge of her bed without turning on the main light. Her phone lay beside her but she did not touch it, as if any movement might disturb the calm she was pretending to have. She kept thinking about the way Jaemin looked at her without changing his expression.

Seoha finally stood up after several minutes and walked to her desk. She opened her notebook but did not write anything meaningful, only resting the pen between her fingers without pressing it to the page. The room was quiet except for the faint sound of the city outside her window. She tried to focus on studying, but her mind kept drifting back to small details she had not noticed before. The way he spoke without hesitation, the way he stood still even when others left.

Seoha whispered to herself without realizing it.

“…Why does it feel like I already know him.”

She stopped immediately after saying it. The sentence felt strange, as if it did not belong fully to her thoughts. She closed her notebook slowly and leaned back in her chair. Outside, a passing car lit up her room for a second before disappearing again. She exhaled quietly and told herself she was overthinking something simple.

Jaemin was not sleeping either.

He sat on the floor of his room with his back against the wall, staring at nothing in particular. His phone was open beside him, but he was not looking at it. Instead, he was replaying the same sequence of moments from the past few days without interruption. The convenience store. The coffee. The hallway. The crosswalk. Each moment felt connected in a way that was becoming harder to ignore.

Jaemin thought quietly to himself.

“She noticed me first that time.”

He closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them again. His room was dark except for the faint light coming through the window. The sound of distant traffic filled the silence, but it did not interrupt his thoughts. He had stopped trying to explain his actions in simple terms. It was no longer about coincidence. It was about continuity.

The next morning at school felt normal on the surface, but not entirely the same underneath it. Seoha arrived earlier than usual and sat in her seat without speaking to anyone. She placed her bag carefully beside her desk and looked toward the window for a long time before class began. Students entered the room in groups, talking loudly, filling the space with noise that did not reach her completely. She noticed Jaemin enter later than others, but he did not look in her direction immediately.

Seoha spoke softly inside her thoughts.

“He is always quiet.”

She looked away quickly after that thought formed. The teacher began speaking at the front of the room, but Seoha only caught fragments of the lesson. Her attention kept shifting without control. Every time she tried to focus, her mind returned to the same person sitting somewhere behind her. It was not fear exactly, but something closer to awareness that refused to disappear.

Jaemin sat in his usual place near the back of the classroom. He did not speak to anyone, and no one spoke to him. That was expected. But today he felt slightly more aware of everything around him, especially the small movements of the person sitting ahead. He did not need to look directly at her to know she was there. That awareness was enough.

Jaemin thought quietly again.

“She is in front of me today.”

That thought alone felt strangely important, even though nothing about it was objectively significant. He adjusted his posture slightly and rested his hands on the desk. The lesson continued, but his attention remained divided in a way that was becoming familiar.

During break time, Seoha left the classroom first. She walked slowly through the hallway and stopped near the water fountain. She did not immediately drink, only standing there for a moment while other students passed by. Her reflection in the window beside her looked slightly distant, as if it belonged to someone else. She turned on the tap and drank water quietly before stepping aside.

Seoha spoke to herself again without sound.

“I should stop thinking about him.”

But the thought did not disappear after she said it. It stayed in the back of her mind like something unresolved. She wiped her mouth gently and walked back toward the classroom. The hallway was less crowded now, and the noise had softened slightly. She noticed Jaemin standing near the end of the corridor before she reached her classroom, but she did not stop.

Their eyes met briefly again.

No one spoke.

No one changed direction.

Seoha continued walking.

Jaemin watched her pass without moving.

That moment did not last long, but it stayed with both of them longer than expected.

Later that day, school ended earlier than usual due to a staff meeting. Students left the building in groups, talking loudly as they stepped outside into the cool air. Seoha stayed behind for a few minutes, organizing her things slowly before leaving. When she finally stepped outside, the sky had already shifted toward evening again.

Jaemin was already outside.

Not directly in front of her.

Not behind her.

Just nearby enough to notice.

Seoha walked forward without looking around too much. Her pace was steady, but not rushed. She crossed the first street and then the second, moving through familiar paths that felt slightly different today. Jaemin followed at a distance again, maintaining the same quiet separation as before. Neither of them acknowledged the other’s presence directly.

Seoha stopped near a small intersection when the light turned red. She adjusted her bag strap and looked down at her phone for a moment before putting it away again. The wind moved lightly through her hair, and the city around her continued its normal rhythm. She did not notice Jaemin standing across the street until she happened to glance up briefly.

Their eyes met for a second longer than before. This time, Seoha did not look away immediately. But she still did eventually. Jaemin did not move. The light turned green. And both of them crossed in opposite directions without speaking, even though the space between them felt smaller than it should have been.
