Ava found herself standing inside a sterile, high-tech science lab. She was trapped behind a massive sheet of two-way mirror glass, pressing her hands against the cold surface. On the outside stood a strange, imposing man holding a sleek remote control in his hand.
"Who... who are you?" Ava cried out, her voice cracking. "Let me out, please! Where am I?"
The man let out a booming, sinister laugh that echoed through the speakers of the enclosure. "You actually thought you could save your parents after the deal they made with me?"
His mocking laughter intensified. Horror gripped Ava's chest, but before she could scream, the sterile lab violently dissolved.
Ava gasped, snapping her eyes open as she jolted awake. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she realized it had all been a nightmare. But her relief was short-lived. As reality rushed back, she found herself tightly bound to a wooden chair in a dimly lit room. Edward stood just a few feet away, watching her intently with a cold, guarded expression.
At the Treasure Bank of Las Vegas, the midday rush was in full swing. Jimmy and his crew slipped through the heavy front doors, blending in seamlessly with the ordinary customers. Joining them a moment later was James, his features hidden behind a dark mask.
Once the crew reached the exact center of the main hall, James pulled on the destructive energy simmering beneath his skin. With a sudden wave of his arms, he unleashed a torrent of white-hot fire, setting the surrounding counters and tapestries ablaze.
As smoke rapidly filled the air, Jimmy and his men quickly pulled on their protective smoke masks and sprinted toward the secure vault room. James, however, stayed behind in the burning lobby. Instead of letting the terrified patrons flee, he stepped into their path. With a slow, deliberate movement, he ripped off his face mask, revealing his face as localized flames danced violently across his skin.
"None of you will leave here alive!" James roared, his voice laced with pure malice.
The trapped crowd screamed in sheer terror as James lunged forward, turning his catastrophic fire powers directly on them. Hearing the horrific shrieks from the vault area, one of Jimmy's crew members ran back to the lobby, his eyes widening in absolute horror. He sprinted straight back to his leader.
"Jimmy! The fireman is slaughtering the people!" the man yelled frantically.
Jimmy froze, completely stunned as the plan spiraled into a nightmare.
Back in the apartment, Ava thrashed against her restraints, the ropes digging into her wrists. "Why am I tied up? Let me go, please!"
Edward paced the floor, visibly agitated and upset. "Who are you working for? Why were you spying on me?" He stopped, staring down at her. "And why were you having a seizure a moment ago?"
Ava’s anger faded into utter confusion. "That was a seizure?" Edward gave a firm nod. She swallowed hard, her mind racing. "I... I’ve never had a seizure before. What did you do to me, you evil Mr. Tempest?"
Edward blinked, completely caught off guard. "Umm... who is that?"
Ava let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "Don't you dare play dumb! I know you're Mr. Tempest. You robbed the bank last night."
A cold sweat broke out on Edward’s neck. Panic seized him as he realized his entire secret identity had been blown.
By the time Jimmy and his crew frantically ran back out into the bank lobby, the screaming had stopped. James had already vanished into thin air, leaving behind a scene of total devastation. Nearly forty bodies lay scorched and lifeless across the ruined hall.
Jimmy stared at the carnage, his hands trembling with fear. "We need to leave right now," he stammered, backing away from the smoke. "If we stay, we will be the ones blamed for killing all these people! Move!"
The crew abandoned the heist, fleeing into the chaotic city streets.
In the quiet apartment, Edward glared at Ava, trying to mask his terror with a threat. "I guess... killing you will be my only option."
"No! No!" Ava shouted, her voice echoing in the small room. "If you try anything, my guy will expose your face to the entire world!" Edward paused, completely bewildered. Ava pressed her advantage. "Yes! I have a photo of you at the beach using your powers from last night."
Edward’s defiance crumbled into pure desperation. "No, no! Why would you do that? Ma'am, please," he pleaded, his voice breaking. "I just wanted to pay off my debts. That's the only reason I robbed the bank. I don't even have a job!"
Ava studied his panicked face, realizing he wasn't a cold-blooded killer. "I can let all of this go," she said calmly, locking eyes with him. "But under two conditions. First, you let me go right now. And second, you take me to the exact place where you got these powers."
Desperate to protect his identity, Edward quickly explained the story of the beach cave and the glowing artifacts. When he finished, Ava nodded firmly. "Take me to the cave, then."
Edward stepped forward and began frantically untying the thick ropes binding her to the chair. "Lady, you're not listening to me. I told you, I already went back to the beach, but the cave was completely gone."
Ava rubbed her chafed wrists as the ropes fell away. "First of all, my name is Ava Washington. And second of all, what exactly do you mean by 'the cave was gone'?"
Meanwhile, Jimmy and his shaken crew finally arrived back at their warehouse hideout. To their absolute surprise, James was already there, casually leaning against a crate and waiting for them.
Jimmy’s fear instantly turned to roaring anger. He marched up to the pyrokinetic, his fists clenched. "What the hell have you done, fireman?!"
James let out a dark, mocking laugh that sent chills down the crew's spines. "You all are so incredibly stupid to think that I would actually join your pathetic little crew just to steal some gold. I am death itself. My only purpose in this world is to kill until I find them."
Jimmy and his men backed away, completely shocked by his words. "What are you even talking about?" Jimmy asked, his voice shaking.
"We'll save that story for another day," James replied, a twisted smile spreading across his face as his eyes flared orange. "But oops... you won't be alive to hear it."
Jimmy and his crew spun around, trying to sprint for the warehouse exits. But with a cruel flick of his wrists, James unleashed a massive wave of fire, engulfing the entire building and burning everyone alive.
A short while later, Edward was behind the wheel of his mother's car, navigating the city streets with Ava sitting in the passenger seat. They were heading toward the coast when traffic ground to a sudden, agonizing halt. Up ahead, flashing emergency lights illuminated the afternoon sky.
They had stumbled right into the aftermath of the central bank massacre. Paramedics and police officers swarmed the perimeter as row after row of body bags were wheeled out of the smoking building. Ava gasped, immediately opening the passenger door. "Stop the car, Edward."
She stepped out into the chaotic street and spotted her boss, Mark Jason, standing near the police barricade. She hurried over to him.
Mark turned, his eyes narrowing as he saw her approach. "Well, well, well. Look who finally decided to show up."
"I'm sorry, sir," Ava said breathlessly, gesturing to the horrific scene. "What the hell happened here?"
Mark shook his head, his usual arrogance replaced by visible unease. "So, apparently that man you showed me the picture of is very real. The media is calling him Mr. Tempest. After last night's flood, he struck again today. But this time around, he didn't use water. He used fire."
Ava froze, a cold dread washing over her. She slowly turned her head back toward the idling car, staring through the windshield at Edward, who sat completely oblivious to the horrific new power that had just been unleashed in his name.
