Edward gripped the steering wheel tightly, his eyes darting from the road to Ava’s pale, shaken face. "Ava, tell me what the hell happened back there."
Ava sat in absolute shock, her voice barely a whisper. "There is an imposter out there... and the whole world thinks Mr. Tempest committed that massacre."
"I don't understand, Ava. Which crime?" Edward asked, confusion turning into dread.
Ava swallowed hard, turning to him as she explained the horrific fire killings at the central bank. "If I was able to track you down, it’s only a matter of time before someone else does. That is why I need you to take me to the beach right now. We have to find out what is actually happening."
Edward pressed his foot onto the gas pedal, staring ahead in mounting fear.
At the chaotic scene of the bank massacre, Special Force Agent Jasper stepped under the yellow police tape, his sharp eyes surveying the smoking wreckage. He marched directly over to one of the ranking officers on duty.
"So, what in God's name are we dealing with here?" Jasper demanded.
The officer held up a digital tablet. "We found the surveillance footage from last night's robbery and compared it to this one. Sir, I think it’s him. It’s Mr. Tempest."
Jasper frowned, crossing his arms. "How sure are you that it was him?"
"He is wearing the exact same black mask from last night," the officer replied, pointing to the screen. "And he targeted a bank, just like his first hit."
The tires of the sedan kicked up sand as Edward pulled up near the shoreline. He and Ava stepped out of the car, but as they approached the rocky cliffs, Edward froze. To his utter surprise, the mouth of the cavern was right there, yawning open in plain sight.
Ava turned to him, her brow furrowed. "You lied to me, didn't you?"
"No! I promise you," Edward stammered, shaking his head frantically. "This cave was completely gone two days ago!"
"Amazing," Ava muttered, staring into the dark abyss. "Let's check it out, then."
They stepped into the damp, echoing cavern. But the moment their feet crossed the threshold, an intense, crushing pressure slammed into their minds. Both of them collapsed heavily onto the rocky floor, their bodies violently seizing as the world faded to black.
Inside the suffocating darkness of her mind, Ava found herself trapped in another vivid vision.
She saw Edward standing before her, dressed in a sleek black suit. Standing right beside him, holding his hand, was a woman in her late forties. Together, the two of them slowly approached Ava.
"Hey, Edward..." Ava cried out, trembling in fear. "What is going on?"
Edward and the mysterious woman spoke in perfect, haunting unison, their voices echoing in her head. "*Remember. Remember. The book... us... us... your parents.*"
Ava jolted awake with a sharp gasp, her chest heaving as she tore herself out of the seizure. Beside her, Edward snapped awake at the exact same moment, dripping in cold sweat.
"I saw you in my seizure," Edward breathed, his eyes wide with shock. "I was saying things to you... standing with some woman."
Ava stared at him, her heart hammering. "What were you saying?"
"I am not entirely sure," Edward muttered, rubbing his temples. "Something about remembrance..."
Ava froze as a sudden, dizzying wave of clarity hit her. As she stared at Edward, his features suddenly blurred, shifting into a completely different figure in her mind's eye. The floodgates of her repressed memories crashed open. The figure Edward had changed into was her father, and the older woman standing beside him was her mother.
Back at the newspaper building, Special Agent Jasper walked into the CEO's office. He tossed a copy of the morning edition onto Mark Jason's desk, pointing directly to the exclusive photograph Ava had captured of the man controlling water on the beach.
"What do you know about this Mr. Tempest?" Jasper asked lines of suspicion etched across his face. "Your newspaper is the only one in the city showing a completely different picture of this guy before the robberies."
Mark leaned back in his leather chair. "Yes, officer. My staff writer, Ava, found this picture. Actually, she snapped it herself."
Jasper’s eyes narrowed in fascination. "This staff member of yours... can you get her in here for me right now?"
Mark picked up his desk phone and immediately dialed Ava's number.
Deep inside the cave, the sharp ring of Ava's cell phone shattered the silence. She answered it quickly, listening for a moment before hanging up and looking at Edward.
"It's my boss," Ava said, her voice tight. "He wants to see me right away. He says it's urgent."
"No, Ava, we can't leave," Edward argued, gesturing deeper into the shadows. "We need to find the book your parents talked about. I don't think any of this is a coincidence anymore. It's all connected somehow."
Ava fell into deep, conflicted thought. "I... I can't remember anything else about them. But Mark... he’s a former colleague of my father. Maybe he could help me remember what happened to them. Besides, there's nothing interesting left in this cave."
Edward reluctantly nodded, and together they hurried back out toward the sunlight.
Three days earlier, inside the very same cave, a different awakening had taken place.
Moments after Edward had fled in terror, James lay scorched on the cavern floor. But he wasn't dying. The intense heat wasn't destroying his body; it was feeding him, making him stronger. He slowly sat up, his skin still crackling with embers of live fire. Suddenly, his muscles locked, and he collapsed back onto the rocks, trapped in a violent seizure of his own.
In his vision, James saw the exact same mysterious man Ava had seen in her first nightmare. But this time, the man was weeping in a twisted, unnatural way.
"You need to find them," the weeping man hissed, his voice full of venom. "Avenge the price of their terrific act on this world."
"I... I don't understand," James stammered in confusion.
"Find them!" the man roared. A sudden, vivid image of Edward flashed in James's mind. "They killed the world. They sent me away. You need to kill them, or you'll never be at peace!"
James snapped awake from the nightmare in sheer terror. Breathing heavily, he stood up and raised both of his hands. With a violent hiss, bright orange flames erupted from his palms on command.
In the present day, James stood alone in the center of the charred, ruined warehouse. The air was thick with smoke, and a suffocating heat radiated off the walls as he stared down at the scorched, lifeless bodies of Jimmy and his crew.
A dark, lethal smile spread across James's face as he clenched his fists, extinguishing the flames.
"Edward," James whispered to himself, his eyes glowing in the dark. "You're going to die young."
